CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Elijah Pughsley scored a career-high 28 points, Haboubacar Mutombo a career-best 22 and Devin Peterson added 20 with 10 rebounds and Western Carolina outlasted The Citadel 100-95 to earn its first Southern Conference win of the season on Thursday night.
Freshman Preston Parks led The Citadel (9-12, 2-6) with 28 points while Zane Najdawi and Leandro Allende each scored 23, a season best for Allende.
Last-second shot block preserves VMI’s 1st SoCon win, 79-78
LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Trey Chapman knocked in a pair of free throws in the final minute and Keith Smith blocked Western Carolina's final shot as VMI held on for a 79-78 victory on Thursday night for its first Southern Conference win of the season.
Elijah Pughsley had pulled Western Carolina within a point at the free-throw line and grabbed a clutch defensive rebound with nine seconds remaining, but had his 3-point attempt blocked by Smith with one second on the clock.
Denzel-Dyson leads Samford to 70-65 win over W Carolina
CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) — Demetrius Denzel-Dyson scored 15 points, Wyatt Walker added 11 and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Samford beat Western Carolina 70-65 on Monday night to win its fourth straight and open Southern Conference play at 2-0 for the first time in school history.
