Rangers SS Andrus in much different spot with Beltre retired
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus prepared for the first full-squad workout at a different locker than in past springs.
Now 30 and going into his 11th season, Andrus is in a much different place than just his spot in the clubhouse.
With star third baseman Adrian Beltre now retired, Andrus will be assuming a bigger leadership role on a team with a lot of 20-something position players in the lineup with him.
Rangers decline options on 4 players, Andrus stands pat
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers declined their 2019 options for catcher Robinson Chirinos and three pitchers on Friday, when their longest-tenured player stayed put.
While the Rangers had been expected to let pitchers Doug Fister, Matt Moore and Martin Perez become free agents, the decision on Chirinos was a bit of a surprise. Their primary starting catcher had a $4.5 million option for next season with a $100,000 buyout.
Padres scouting vice president Don Welke dies at 75
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres vice president of scouting Don Welke has died. He was 75.
The team says he died Wednesday night in San Diego surrounded by family. No cause was given.
Welke worked in baseball for more than 50 years. He joined the Padres in 2014, following general manager A.J. Preller from the Texas Rangers to San Diego. Welke also worked the Phillies, Dodgers, Orioles, Blue Jays, Royals and Reds.
Chirinos’ 3 RBIs lead Rangers past Padres 6-3
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Robinson Chirinos and the Rangers broke through in the sixth inning, and the bullpen made that lead stand on a long work night for Texas' relievers.
Chirinos hit a three-run double and Isiah Kiner-Falefa followed with a pinch-hit RBI double during a five-run sixth inning to help the Rangers beat the San Diego Padres 6-3 on Saturday night.
Beltre, Andrus back Minor in Rangers’ 4-2 win over Angels
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — It was another Minor victory for the Texas Rangers, after they went ahead on solo homers by Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus.
Mike Minor, a full-time reliever for the Royals last season after missing 2 1/2 years because of surgery for a torn labrum, won for the fifth time in his last six starts as the Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Healy hit in 12th pushes Mariners past Rangers 4-3
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ryon Healy let out a sigh of relief, and the Seattle Mariners regained the lead in extra innings when his hard grounder got through the left side of the Rangers infield.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Both of Cleveland's new relievers got into the game before the Indians closer had a rare blown save.
Manager Terry Francona had to go deep into his bullpen — using seven relievers after All-Star starter Trevor Bauer's early exit — before the big hitters in the heart of the lineup finally put Cleveland ahead to stay.
Sale helps Red Sox win 9th straight, 4-2 over Texas
BOSTON (AP) — Chris Sale struck out 12 in seven innings of shutout ball in his final start before the All-Star Game, and major league batting leader Mookie Betts had two more hits on Wednesday night to lead the Boston Red Sox to their ninth straight victory, 4-2 over the Texas Rangers.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Isiah Kiner-Falefa was only five games into his first Triple-A season when he got called up by the Texas Rangers in early April. A few days later, Ronald Guzman got promoted and also made his big-league debut.
When Texas reached the midpoint of the regular season this week, the 23-year-old rookies were among eight position players on the roster who are 25 or younger.
Hosmer ends Mike Minor’s perfect game bid in 7th
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rangers left-hander Mike Minor had his perfect-game bid ended when San Diego's Eric Hosmer singled with one out in the seventh inning Wednesday night.
Minor cruised through six perfect innings on just 70 pitches. The closest San Diego had come to a hit was Jose Pirela's sharp grounder to the left side in the fifth inning. Shortstop Elvis Andrus went deep in the hole to field it, and his long throw narrowly nabbed Pirela.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Elvis Andrus is back in the Texas lineup after his first trip to the disabled list.
Andrus, a two-time All-Star for the Rangers, was activated Monday for the series opener against the Kansas City Royals. He missed 59 games after a pitch by Kenyan Middleton broke his right elbow in an April 11 game against the Los Angeles Angels.
ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus has played in his first game since his right elbow was fractured when he got hit by a pitch two months ago.
Andrus started an injury rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Monday night. He went 0 for 3 at the plate and had four assists on defense while playing five innings.
SEATTLE (AP) — Even without injured stars Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus, catcher Robinson Chirinos still sees plenty of potential in the Texas Rangers' lineup.
And the past two nights, the Rangers flashed late-game maturity to go along with it in topping the Seattle Mariners.
Chirinos' tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh inning capped another late-inning rally, and the Rangers beat Seattle 7-6 on Wednesday.
Major league pitchers are placing batters on notice: Beware of the inside pitch.
The regular season is only two weeks old, and already 149 batters — or 0.42 per game — have been plunked.
It's certainly early, but that rate is 17 percent higher than 2017's full-season rate and would be the highest in baseball since a rate of 0.39 in 2001.
And it's hard to miss the impact some of these HBPs have had thus far.
One led to a bench-clearing brawl that featured four ejections.
Losses mounting for Texas Rangers in lineup, standings
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The losses are mounting quickly for the Texas Rangers, both in the standings and their starting lineup.
By the time the Rangers finally had their first day off of the season Thursday, the last team in the majors to get a break, they were the first team with 10 losses.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus will miss six to eight weeks after additional tests Thursday confirmed the fracture in his right elbow.
Dr. Keith Meister, the team physician, said the fracture is stable and will not require surgery. The elbow of Andrus' throwing arm is in a splint.
Andrus got hit by a fastball from hard-throwing reliever Keynan Middleton in the ninth inning of a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday night.
Rangers’ Andrus breaks elbow after getting hit vs Angels
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus broke his right elbow Wednesday night when he was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning of the team's fourth straight loss.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers rotation is leaning quite a bit to the left.
There was no reunion with Yu Darvish or any other high-prized pitching additions during the offseason. The Rangers instead added two more lefty starters to go with Cole Hamels and Martin Perez, along with a free agent right-hander.
Rangers hungry to get back to leading the AL West
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The Texas Rangers are famished for success after a down 2017.
After winning back-to-back AL West championships, the Rangers went from winning 97 games in 2016 to a 78-84 record last season and finishing 23 games behind the Houston Astros.
"Hungry dogs run faster," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said Tuesday, the first day of the club's full-squad workout. "That may be a T-shirt."
Rangers fall 3 1/2 back for wild card with 4-1 loss to A’s
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Texas Rangers are running out of time to avoid missing the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
Rookie Matt Olson hit his sixth home run in seven games, a second-inning drive off Nick Martinez that helped the Athletics beat Texas 4-1 on Friday night and damage the Rangers' playoff hopes.
"We haven't been able to play good baseball here in Oakland," shortstop Elvis Andrus said. "But we've got to a scratch that out and stay positive. Tomorrow is a big game for us."
