Jets place TE Tomlinson on IR, sign TE Walford
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have placed tight end Eric Tomlinson on injured reserve and signed tight end Clive Walford to replace him for the season finale.
The nature of Tomlinson's injury wasn't immediately certain. He wasn't on the injury report Wednesday. Tomlinson dealt with an Achilles tendon issue late last week, but fully participated in practice and played against Green Bay last Sunday.
For Jets on Sunday, trouble started with the snap
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Snapping the ball was a challenge Sunday for the New York Jets, and things didn't get any better after that.
Center Spencer Long reinjured a finger and had half-dozen off-target shotgun hikes, which compounded problems for quarterback Sam Darnold. He threw four interceptions — including a pick-six after he snared a high snap — and the Jets never reached the end zone in a 13-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Jets’ tight ends in tightly contested competition
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets will spend the next few weeks sorting through their intriguing quarterback situation, with Sam Darnold, Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater the clear focus of attention.
But the tight ends are in perhaps the most tightly contested competition of camp.
New York has a group of five mostly unheralded players trying to win roster spots and be among the guys catching passes from whoever ends up under center this season.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed tight end Chris Herndon, their fourth-round draft pick, to a four-year contract.
The team announced the signing Monday, the day before organized team activities were to begin.
Quarterback Sam Darnold, the No. 3 overall selection, is the only player among the Jets' six-man draft class who remains unsigned.
Jets sign former Vikings, Panthers TE Bucky Hodges
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed tight end Bucky Hodges.
The team announced the move Tuesday — a day after New York claimed tight end Clive Walford off waivers from Oakland.
The Jets also have Eric Tomlinson, Jordan Leggett and Neal Sterling at the tight end position.
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have claimed tight end Clive Walford off waivers from the Oakland Raiders.
The Jets announced the move Monday. It provides New York depth at tight end after Austin Seferian-Jenkins recently signed with Jacksonville as a free agent.
Tight ends Eric Tomlinson, Jordan Leggett and Neal Sterling are also on the roster.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets have tendered wide receiver Quincy Enunwa at the second-round level, worth $2.9 million.
Enunwa was a restricted free agent after missing last season with a bulging disk in his neck that required surgery. He had a breakout season in 2016, catching 58 passes for 857 yards and four touchdowns.
Jets sign Sterling off Chiefs’ practice squad; Coleman on IR
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed tight end Neal Sterling off the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad and placed cornerback Xavier Coleman on injured reserve.
Sterling had one catch for 8 yards while playing in three games with the Jets earlier this season after being signed as a free agent on Sept. 3. He was signed to Kansas City's practice squad on Oct. 7, two days after being waived by New York.
Jets waive TE Tye, release RB Murphy from practice squad
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have waived tight end Will Tye and released running back Marcus Murphy from the practice squad.
Tye was claimed off waivers last month from the Giants, where he played the last two seasons. The former Stony Brook star had four catches for 38 yards in three games for the Jets.
Jets starting guard Brian Winters out vs Dolphins
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets will be without starting right guard Brian Winters for their home opener Sunday against the Miami Dolphins because of an abdominal injury.
Winters was injured last Sunday at Oakland and replaced by fourth-year backup Dakota Dozier. Coach Todd Bowles says Friday that Dozier and Brent Qvale split the snaps this week during practice, but he had not yet decided on who would start.
Jets rule 6 players out for Raiders game
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have ruled out six players for their game against the Oakland Raiders, including starting tight end Eric Tomlinson.
Tomlinson injured his left elbow while making the second of two catches in the Jets' season-opening loss at Buffalo last Sunday. Rookie Jordan Leggett (knee) is also out, leaving New York with only Will Tye and Neal Sterling as healthy tight ends on the roster.
Jets sign former Jaguars, Monmouth tight end Neal Sterling
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Neal Sterling and waived wide receiver Damore'ea Stringfellow.
Sterling, a seventh-round draft pick out of Monmouth University in 2015, has 12 career catches for 110 yards in 19 games. The converted wide receiver was waived by the Jaguars on Sunday.
Jets tight end Eric Tomlinson catches on as big-time blocker
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Eric Tomlinson is a big, burly tight end whose main job for the New York Jets isn't catching footballs, it's throwing blocks on defenders.
That's the gritty, unglamorous life of a so-called blocking tight end in the NFL — and Tomlinson fully embraces the role.
Jets sign tight end Brian Parker
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets have signed free agent tight end Brian Parker.
Parker was claimed off waivers by the Jets from Kansas City last September, but was waived with a failed physical two days later.
He adds depth to a position at which New York also has Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Eric Tomlinson, Braedon Bowman and Jason Vander Laan.
