DENVER (AP) — The playoff-chasing Colorado Avalanche received a big blow when goalie Semyon Varlamov and defenseman Erik Johnson were ruled out for the remainder of the regular season due to injuries.
Colorado coach Jared Bednar said Saturday that Varlamov suffered a lower-body injury the night before when a Chicago player ran into him in the third period. Varlamov will be re-evaluated next week. Bednar said Johnson has a fractured patella and will be sidelined at least six weeks.
Vegas secures playoff spot with 4-1 win over Avalanche
LAS VEGAS (AP) — William Karlsson and Jonathan Marchessault each scored to help the expansion Vegas Golden Knights clinch a playoff spot with a 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night.
The Golden Knights, who lead the Pacific Division, became the first team to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season since the league expanded for the 1967-68 season.
It was also the 200th career victory for coach Gerard Gallant.

NEW YORK (AP) — Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Sunday for boarding Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vladislav Namestnikov.
Johnson was assessed a minor penalty for slashing and a major penalty and game misconduct for boarding in the second period of Colorado's 6-5 home loss Saturday night.
Avalanche score twice in 41 seconds, beat Panthers 7-3
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche came from behind and never looked back.
Nathan MacKinnon and Alexander Kerfoot scored 41 seconds apart in the second period and Colorado beat the Florida Panthers 7-3 on Saturday night to snap a four-game skid.
Colin Wilson, Erik Johnson and Mikko Rantanen also had goals for the Avalanche. Matt Nieto and Carl Soderberg both scored into an empty net late in the third, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 39 shots.
Stamkos leads Lightning past Avalanche 5-2
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists, and the Tampa Bay Lightning became the first NHL team with 20 wins by defeating the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 on Thursday night.
Stamkos, who entered with one goal and two assists over his previous eight games, got his 12th goal early in the first. He also assisted on Vladislav Namestnikov's tiebreaking goal at 8:09 of the second and Alex Killorn's third of the season 4:57 into the third.

Avs claim defenseman Patrik Nemeth off waivers from Stars
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche reinforced their defense by claiming Patrik Nemeth on waivers from Dallas.
The 25-year-old defenseman was a second-round pick by the Stars in 2010. He's appeared in 108 career NHL games and has 14 assists.
Nemeth joins a Colorado blue line that already includes Erik Johnson, Tyson Barrie, Mark Barberio, Nikita Zadorov and Chris Bigras.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson is nearing a return after being sidelined since early December with a broken leg.
Although Johnson won't play Tuesday against Los Angeles, coach Jared Bednar said the Avalanche's top defenseman has been going through some of the contact drills in practice and "that's a positive sign."
He broke his leg while blocking a shot Dec. 3 against Dallas.
Lehtonen leads Stars past Avalanche 3-0
DENVER (AP) — Kari Lehtonen and the Dallas Stars put together a nice finish for a lousy road trip.
Lehtonen had 23 saves for his first shutout of the season, and the Stars beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-0 on Saturday night.
Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Eaves and Curtis McKenzie also scored. Dallas finished 1-2-1 on its trip to St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Colorado.
Shields keeps deal with White Sox rather than go free
CHICAGO (AP) — James Shields is keeping his contract with the Chicago White Sox rather than become a free agent after tying for the big league lead in losses.
The 32-year-old right-hander was acquired from San Diego on June 4 for pitcher Erik Johnson and shortstop prospect Fernando Tatis Jr.
The Padres on Monday acquired Luis Sardinas from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash or a player to be named later and optioned the infielder to Triple-A El Paso. Right-hander Erik Johnson was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in order to create room on the 40-man roster.
Erik Johnson’s elbow started barking two starts into his stay in the Padres organization. A lack of progress to date, Padres manager Andy Green conceded Sunday morning, likely means that the 26-year-old right-hander won’t appear in another game this year.
Another visit with team doctors on Friday did not add any clarity to the flexor strain that’s sidelined Johnson for a month.
“It just needs time to heal,” Green said. “You start looking at time frames...
