Social media threat closes an Alabama, Georgia school system
EUFAULA, Ala. (AP) — Officials say a social media threat has prompted the closure of schools in an Alabama city and a neighboring district in Georgia.
News outlets reported that Eufaula City Schools are closed Thursday because of the threat. The school district said on its website that law enforcement is investigating the threat but classes were canceled to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Quitman County Schools in neighboring Georgia also are closed because of the threat.
Alabama police probe moonshine operation
EUFAULA, Ala. (AP) — Police in Alabama are investigating an illegal moonshine operation after dozens of fermentation barrels were found in some woods.
Eufaula Police Sgt. Donald Brown told news outlets Tuesday the 36 fermentation barrels found Monday could produce about $7,500 in illegal liquor on each run.
Brown says about 250 gallons of moonshine was found as well. Authorities say a group cutting trees noticed the barrels. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has joined the probe.
Alabama town unveils fish monument
EUFAULA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama is known for its unusual memorials and statues, and the city of Eufaula is adding to the list with a monument to a fish.
Officials in the lakeside town on the Georgia border have unveiled a 12-foot-tall replica of a largemouth bass to celebrate its claim as the "Big Bass Capital of the World."
Bass fishing draws thousands of people to Lake Eufaula each year, and the state tourism agency awarded a grant to construct the monument. It was unveiled Tuesday.
Faulkner hires former Troy assistant, Eufaula head coach Shayne Wasden
MONTGOMERY - Faulkner has hired Shayne Wasden to take the helm of the football program the university announced Wednesday morning. The former Troy University associate head coach replaces Charlie Boren, who resigned in December after six seasons on staff.
Wasden will be formally introduced at a press conference Thursday morning at 11 a.m. and will officially assume his new role on Friday.
Students in Alabama build classrooms for Honduras
EUFAULA, Ala. (AP) — Career technology students in Alabama are building classrooms for Honduras.
Several schools around the state are designing and remodeling donated cargo containers, The Dothan Eagle reported . They will be shipped to Honduras and transported to a school in a remote area for use as career tech classrooms.

Florida man who killed abortion doctor due at parole hearing
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man who shot and killed a doctor outside a women's clinic in 1993 at the beginning of a wave of deadly anti-abortion violence will appear before the state's parole board Wednesday.
Michael Griffin, who is serving a life sentence at Blackwater River Correctional Facility in Milton, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Dr. David Gunn. He was gunned down on March 10, 1993, while arriving to work at an abortion clinic in Pensacola, Florida.
Alabama woman arrested in crash that killed girl
EUFAULA, Ala. (AP) — A 35-year-old Alabama woman has been arrested for murder in connection to an April 28 crash that killed a little girl and injured five others.

AL.com reports large crowds had gathered at a Citgo station just before bullets rang out on Saturday night. No injuries have been reported.
Alabama woman, 19, dies in crash
EUFAULA, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama woman has died in a single-vehicle crash in Barbour County.
Media outlets report that according to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, 19-year-old Dothan resident Danya Nicole Griffler-Brink was killed early Sunday when the 2006 Buick Lacrosse she was driving left the road, struck a tree and overturned.
The crash occurred on U.S. 431 about four miles (six km) south of Eufaula.
MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Men from Texas and Alabama have been sentenced for posing as Internal Revenue Service agents and bilking a northern Iowa woman.
The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2qNIH8x ) that 41-year-old Eduardo Cruz, of Grapevine, Texas, last week was sentenced to four days in jail. A $625 fine was suspended, and he was ordered to pay nearly $5,000 in restitution. He'd pleaded guilty to theft.

Eufaula police says it happened around 8 p.m. Friday when a 1994 Acura Integra traveling northbound on Eufaula Avenue crossed the center median and struck a 2011 Dodge Caliber traveling south.
Man killed after arriving at ex-girlfriend’s home uninvited
OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a 28-year-old man was shot dead after he showed uninvited at his ex-girlfriend's Opelika home.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office said in a statement on Tuesday that Kenneth Justin Williamson, of Eufaula, was found lying in the backyard of a mobile home Sunday night.
Missing Alabama man’s remains found in Georgia
MACON, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a missing Alabama man's remains have been found in rural southwest Georgia.
Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/2beLp2J ) that the remains found in Randolph County on July 20 are those of Jimmy "Zeke" Glenn. Police in Eufaula, Alabama, said the 78-year-old's family had reported him missing the morning of July 8. His abandoned vehicle was found that day.
