PARIS (AP) — Roger Federer's bid for a 100th career title remains on as he beat Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3 on Thursday to reach the Paris Masters quarterfinals.
If he wins that, against Kei Nishikori, he could face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals — but Federer is thinking more about winning the season-ending ATP Finals, which start Nov. 11.
"My objective is London. If I can do well here in Paris and beat (Djokovic), all the better," Federer said. "But I'm not there yet. We'll see."
Gulbis beats Isner to reach Stockholm Open final
STOCKHOLM (AP) — Ernests Gulbis reached his first ATP final since 2014 by beating top-seeded John Isner 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the Stockholm Open on Saturday.
Gulbis, a former French Open semifinalist, will play Stefanos Tsitsipas in Sunday's championship match in his bid for a seventh career title.
The third-seeded Tsitsipas won the first of the semifinals, beating Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-2. The 19-year-old Greek has yet to win a title.
Isner toughs out 3-set win in 1st match at Stockholm Open
STOCKHOLM (AP) — John Isner was taken all the way by fellow American Bradley Klahn before winning his first match of the week at the Stockholm Open on Thursday.

CHENGDU, China (AP) — Bernard Tomic upset top-seeded Fabio Fognini 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7) to win the Chengdu Open championship on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Australian, ranked No. 123 in the world, smashed 12 aces and saved seven of 11 break points he faced to win his first ATP title since Bogota 2015.
The No. 13th-ranked Fognini fell short in his attempt to become the first Italian to win four tour-level titles in one season, following wins at Sao Paolo, Bastad and Los Cabos earlier this year.
Fognini going for 4th ATP title of the year in Chengdu
CHENGDU, China (AP) — Top-seeded Fabio Fognini reached his fourth ATP final of the year when he beat Taylor Fritz of the United States 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-3 at the Chengdu Open on Saturday.
If Fognini beats Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic in the final on Sunday, he will become the first Italian to win four ATP titles in a season.
After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Fognini cruised the rest of the way, breaking Fritz six times over the last two sets.
Wawrinka reaches St. Petersburg Open quarterfinals
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Stan Wawrinka kept his injury comeback on track with a hard-fought win over Karen Khachanov to reach the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg Open on Wednesday.
Wawrinka saved two set points in each set on his way to winning 7-6 (10), 7-6 (1) over the fourth-seeded Khachanov, who at No. 24 is ranked 64 places above Wawrinka.
Wawrinka's quarterfinal opponent will be either defending champion Damir Dzumhur or Guido Pella.
BASTAD, Sweden (AP) — Fabio Fognini won his second ATP title this year after beating Richard Gasquet 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the Swedish Open final on Sunday.
The third-seeded Italian clinched his seventh title overall, all of them on outdoor clay.
No. 4 Gasquet was also going for his second ATP title of 2018.
BASTAD, Sweden (AP) — Fabio Fognini edged Fernando Verdasco for the first time on clay to reach the Swedish Open final against Richard Gasquet on Saturday.
Fognini won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 even after losing two break leads in the deciding set of their 2-hour, 17-minute semifinal.
"Beating Fernando is really difficult. He is a great champion," Fognini said. "At the end, it is a lottery."
He lost his previous three matches with the Spaniard on clay.

Fognini found guilty of major offenses by Grand Slam board
LONDON (AP) — Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini was handed a suspended ban of two Grand Slam tournaments on Wednesday for insulting a chair umpire at the U.S. Open.
The Grand Slam board said Fognini will be suspended from participating in two major tournaments — one of which will be the U.S. Open — if he commits another major offense before the end of 2019.
The board determined Fognini committed "major offenses of aggravated behavior and conduct contrary to the integrity of the game."
Rafael Nadal advances to quarterfinals of China Open
BEIJING (AP) — Rafael Nadal earned his season-leading 58th victory on Thursday by beating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open.
The top-ranked Spaniard, who won the French Open and U.S. Open this year, saved all six break points he faced and increased his lead over Roger Federer at the top of the rankings.

Bosnian Damir Dzumhur wins 1st title in St. Petersburg
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Unseeded Damir Dzumhur became the first player from Bosnia-Herzegovina to win an ATP World Tour singles title, beating Fabio Fognini 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 Sunday in the final of the St. Petersburg Open.
The 25-year-old Dzumhur's maiden title came after reaching his first career final in Winston-Salem in August.
"I couldn't find my best rhythm, couldn't find my best game," Dzumhur said. "But the experience of playing one final already helped me a lot and in the end I won."
Fognini, Dzumhur reach final of St. Petersburg Open
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Fabio Fognini will play for his second ATP title of the year and Damir Dzumhur for the first of his career in the final of the St. Petersburg Open.
The third-seeded Fognini eliminated top-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain 2-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5 (5) in 2 1/2 hours in the semifinals on Saturday. The Italian broke Bautista Agut only once, in the second set.
Fognini apologizes for insulting chair umpire at US Open
ROME (AP) — Fabio Fognini has apologized for insulting a chair umpire at the U.S. Open and said he is prepared to discuss his mistake with schoolchildren as a lesson.
Fognini was kicked out of the New York tournament on Saturday and could be banned from all Grand Slam events.
"I apologize to everyone, not only the chair umpire, to whom I already apologized in New York, but to everyone who felt offended — women above all," Fognini told Italy's Sky TV in a report that was broadcast Tuesday.
Fognini kicked out of US Open doubles for actions in singles
NEW YORK (AP) — Fabio Fognini was kicked out of the U.S. Open doubles tournament Saturday and faces a possible permanent ban from all Grand Slam events after vulgarly insulting the chair umpire during his first-round loss in singles.
If the Grand Slam Board determines Fognini committed a "major offense," the Italian also could be fined up to $250,000 for violating the code of conduct.
Fognini fined $24,000 for actions during US Open loss
NEW YORK (AP) — Fabio Fognini has been fined $24,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct during his first-round loss at the U.S. Open.
The Italian was cited Friday by the tournament for three conduct violations, including one incident in which he insulted a female chair umpire. His fines were for $15,000, $5,000 and $4,000.
Fognini, the No. 22-seed, lost to fellow Italian Stefano Travaglia 6-4, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-0 on Wednesday.
