Tobacco wholesaler gets prison for cheating state of $6M
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A tobacco wholesaler who cheated Connecticut out of nearly $6 million in tax revenue by underreporting the amount of tobacco he sold has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Federal prosecutors say 46-year-old Rishi Malik, of Fairfield, was also sentenced Wednesday to three years of probation and was ordered to pay $5.8 million in restitution.
Malik, a citizen of India, previously pleaded guilty to wire fraud and violating the Contraband Cigarette Trafficking Act.

Connecticut restaurant worker attacked by unknown assailant
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — Police are looking for a man they say attacked a Connecticut restaurant worker.
Police tell the Connecticut Post the victim was taking out trash at Paci Restaurant in Fairfield's Southport section at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday when she was attacked.
She told police she was grabbed from behind and when she struggled to get away, her assailant punched her in the face several times and stabbed her in the stomach before fleeing.

75-year-old man charged in shooting death of ex-wife
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) — A 75-year-old Connecticut man charged with killing his ex-wife has been held on $2 million bond.
Police say James Taylor broke into the Fairfield home at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday and shot 70-year-old Catherine Taylor.
Police say James Taylor then got into an altercation with the woman's 45-year-old son, who was not injured. Police released a booking photo showing Taylor with bandages on his head and a large cut on his left cheek. The son was not charged.

Police say 31-year-old Heidi Lueders faces five counts of animal cruelty. The Hour reports police say the arrest stems from the discovery of the remains of five dead dogs inside her home last year.

Suspect dies after allegedly stabbing 2, setting house fire
VACAVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Northern California authorities say a man was fatally shot by police after he stabbed two people and set a home on fire, burning a child in the process.
The Vacaville Police Department said Tuesday that officers responded Monday to reports of a home on fire.
They found a 43-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl with multiple stab wounds, and a 4-year-old girl with burn injuries. The three were taken to a hospital, where they are in stable condition.
