Junior guard Mussini leaves St. John’s
NEW YORK (AP) — Junior guard Federico Mussini has decided to leave St. John's to pursue a professional basketball career in Europe.
Mussini, who averaged 9.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists, over the past two seasons, made the announcement Tuesday. The native of Reggio Emilia, Italy, played in 62 games, starting 25. He made 112 3-pointers and shot 85.9 percent at the free throw line.
Ahmed scores career-high 23, St. John’s tops Marquette 86-72
NEW YORK (AP) — Bashir Ahmed had a career-high 23 points and St. John's made all six free throws and a layup in the final 2:07 to beat Marquette 86-72 on Wednesday night.
Shamorie Ponds added 18 points, Marcus LoVett scored 17 and Kassoum Yakwe had 14 to help the Red Storm (11-13, 5-6 Big East).
St. John's had a 10-3 run to build its lead to 78-64 with 4:44 left. The Golden Eagles (14-8, 5-5) answered with a pair of 3-pointers to get within eight but they would get no closer.
St. John’s has different look entering Mullin’s 2nd season
NEW YORK (AP) — Chris Mullin's first season as coach at St. John's ended with an 8-24 record, including 1-17 in the Big East. Along the way there was a school-record 16-game losing streak and the Red Storm closed the season by losing 21 of their last 22 games.
