Western Kansas crash kills 2 from Minnesota, 1 from Kansas
WELLSFORD, Kan. (AP) — Authorities have identified the three people killed when two tractor-trailers collided head-on in southwest Kansas and caught on fire.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened early Wednesday when the rig that 55-year-old Gary Heald, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, was driving crossed the center line on U.S. 54 near the town of Wellsford in Kiowa County. He then rammed the rig that 38-year-old Justin Wise, of Arkansas City, Kansas, was driving.

Man struck and killed by train at crossing in Detroit Lakes
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (AP) — A man is dead after being struck by a Canadian Pacific Railway train in Detroit Lakes.
Police say the 57-year-old pedestrian was hit at a crossing about 12:15 a.m. Monday. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
The man's name wasn't immediately released. His last known address was Fergus Falls.

Sex offender charged with kidnap, sexual assault
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Bail is set at $5 million for a convicted sex offender charged with abducting a woman at gunpoint from her home near Fergus Falls and sexually assaulting her.
Thirty-nine-year-old Anthony Randklev, of Pelican Rapids, is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping and several other counts in Otter Tail County. He remains jailed.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — A Pelican Rapids man accused of abducting a woman from her home at gunpoint is being held in the Otter Tail County jail on a possible kidnapping charge and other felonies.
Sheriff's officials said Monday the 34-year-old woman was abducted from her home near Fergus Falls Sunday afternoon. Authorities say the man forced the woman to leave with him in his pickup truck. One of the four young children in the home called the father, who alerted authorities.
Semi driver guilty in fatal Otter Tail County crash
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — A semi driver who caused a crash that killed a 16-year-old boy has been found guilty of criminal charges in Otter Tail County.
A jury Thursday found 36-year-old Jason Vadner, of Wheaton, guilty of criminal vehicular homicide and careless driving for a head-on crash that killed Jacob Quam in April. The teen was on his way to Henning High School when Vadner crossed the center line and hit the boy's car.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say no charges will be filed against a business owner who shot and killed a suspected burglar outside his business in southern Des Moines.
Des Moines police said Friday that 67-year-old Thomas Kraft checked security cameras at this business from his home Wednesday morning and saw the shop had been burglarized.

Caretakers charged in Otter Tail County with malicious treatment, murder of 6-year-old boy
A northwestern Minnesota couple were charged Wednesday in Otter Tail County with murder and malicious punishment of a child in connection with the death of a 6-year-old boy they were caring for at the request of his grandmother, who lives in Montana.
The boy, Justis Burland-Arnett, suffered a series of horrendous injuries over time, including from what appeared to be beatings with a stick or rod, hair torn from his head and possible scalding to his skin, according to court records.
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a man and a woman from Fergus Falls with murder in the death of a 6-year-old boy they were caring for.
Forty-year-old Bobbie Christine Bishop and 44-year-old Walter Henry Wynhoff are charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and malicious punishment of a child.
The boy was unresponsive when he was brought to a Fergus Falls hospital Monday.

Authorities say the boy was unconscious and not breathing when he was brought to a hospital Monday morning. Attempts to revive him at the hospital failed.
Police say there is a "clear indication" that the boy had been a victim of neglect and abuse. A sibling who was found to be living in the same home was taken into protective custody.

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — An inmate at the Stillwater state prison has been convicted of threatening law enforcement officers and witness tampering.
A district court jury in Fergus Falls found 26-year-old Ramsey Kettle guilty of threatening two Fergus Falls Police officers and an Otter Tail County deputy along with a witness in another case.

Minnesota officials seek to demolish old state hospital
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Officials in western Minnesota are seeking to demolish long-abandoned buildings that were once a state hospital.
Fergus Falls leaders have asked the state Legislature for almost $9 million to demolish the Fergus Falls State Hospital, Minnesota Public Radio reported .
The hospital once treated as many as 2,000 patients for various mental illnesses.

The city of Fergus Falls is moving forward with demolition plans for most of its historic former mental asylum, frustrated that more than a decade of efforts to find a developer for the sprawling site appear to have failed.
It wasnt for a lack of trying.
Since 2007, the city has pursued multiple redevelopment proposals, but none has been able to handle the size or scope of the campus, which includes 600,000 square feet of buildings.
Fighting store closing, Fergus Falls hopes to keep Target interested in rural Minnesota
Its not just about Fergus Falls, insisted Mayor Ben Schierer.
Because if Target Corp. follows through on plans to close a profitable store in the thriving seat of Otter Tail County, he said, other rural Minnesota locations had better watch out.
Theyve made their decision and weve let them know that theyve made the wrong decision, quite frankly, Schierer said last week. Its about the entire outstate region of Minnesota.
Target is not investing in rural communities, and thats troubling.
Deaths of 2 people apparent murder-suicide in Fergus Falls
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Investigators say a Fergus Falls man apparently shot and killed his ex-wife before taking his own life.
The two are identified as 41-year-old Ryan Cheshire and Sarah Cheshire, also 41.
Officers responded to a call of a person down and not breathing late Wednesday night. When officers arrived at Ryan Christian's apartment, they found the two bodies.
Winona's junior varsity Black team surprised the field Sunday to win the state championship at the Minnesota High School State Junior Varsity Tournament at Concord Lanes in South St. Paul.
The Black team qualified fourth after the first round, then went into the final eight as the top seed. They defeated Fergus Falls by three pins in the two-game total-pins title match.

The shooting happened in a Fergus Falls apartment Tuesday. The victim was taken to a Fargo hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Former Fergus Falls teacher sentenced for child pornography
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A longtime substitute teacher in Fergus Falls has been sentenced to five years in prison on a child pornography charge.
Authorities say that undercover agents discovered that Joshua Noble was active on an internet-based messaging service called Chatstep. He allegedly had more than 240 images of children under 12.
The 39-year-old Noble pleaded guilty in June to distribution of child pornography.
The Stillwater school board, already divided over controversial school closings, is awaiting findings of an investigation into two of its members after hearing a complaint from a district employee.
The board voted 4-2, with one abstention, to hire a Fergus Falls, Minn., law firm to investigate Sarah Stivland and Mike Ptacek, both of whom opposed the decision to close three elementary schools.
Charles Beck started selling his drawings in grade school for candy and marbles growing up in Fergus Falls. Some 90 years later, his prints and paintings of nature and landscapes are displayed around the world.
Beck, 94, died Sept. 12 after a prolific career during which he became one of the states most well-known artists.

Authorities say 21-year-old Dmytro Baybak fell about 150 feet from a platform at the Wheaton Dumont co-op elevator in the Wilkin County community of Tenney last Thursday.
Minnesota man faces 28th drunken driving charge
FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — A 64-year-old Minnesota man faces his 28th DWI charge.
Danny Lee Bettcher of New York Mills was charged last week in Otter Tail County with felony-level drunken driving and refusing to submit to a preliminary breath test.
Bettcher was arrested Thursday after leaving the VFW in New York Mills. According to the complaint, an off-duty sheriff's deputy also was in the VFW, saw Bettcher drinking and alerted authorities.

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — The body of a missing Grand Forks man has been recovered from a lake in Otter Tail County.
The sheriff's department says sonar equipment from Crow Wing County helped locate the body of 39-year-old Peter Akinboro Wednesday afternoon. He had been reported missing Saturday evening after taking a Jet Ski out on West Battle Lake. The Jet Ski and his life jacket were recovered earlier from the lake.

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Authorities in Otter Tail County are searching a lake for a man who disappeared while driving a Jet Ski.
The sheriff's department said Monday it's searching for 39-year-old Peter Akintola Akinboro, of Grand Forks. Officials say he was visiting family on West Battle Lake Saturday and left a cabin on a personal watercraft.

Police investigate death of infant in Redwood Falls
REDWOOD FALLS — Police in southwestern Minnesota are investigating the death of an infant.
Redwood police and an ambulance crew were dispatched Tuesday on a 911 call about an unresponsive infant.
First responders tried to revive the infant, but the child was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Authorities are withholding the child's name until family members are notified.

NC couple sought in Virginia shooting arrested in Minnesota
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A North Carolina couple charged in a shooting in Virginia that left a woman seriously injured has been arrested in Minnesota.
Virginia State Police said in a news release that Sean Castorina and Penny Dawson were arrested Thursday morning at a gas station in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
Castorina and Dawson are charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm and car theft. They are awaiting extradition to Virginia.

The Woodie Camp is sponsored by the Minnesota Waterfowl Association, Minnesota Public Radio reported . Up to 50 students learn about bird calls, prairie ecology, outdoor ethics and shooting.
Robert E. "Bob" Lyngaas, 79, of St. Charles, died Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.
Bob was born Oct. 2, 1937, in Fergus Falls, Minn., to Julius and Agnes (Orpen) Lyngaas. He graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1955 and attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, for a year and a half before serving in the Army for two years.
