Nadal pulls out of Paris Masters; will lose No. 1 ranking
PARIS (AP) — Returning from one injury to play at the Paris Masters, Rafael Nadal pulled out with another one.
This time it wasn't the troublesome right knee which had sidelined him since the U.S. Open semifinals in early September, but rather an abdominal injury which just crept up on him.
Given his history of injuries, Nadal listened to advice and did not play his second-round match against Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday.
Kevin Anderson vs Kei Nishikori in Vienna final
VIENNA (AP) — Kei Nishikori will try to end his long losing streak in ATP finals and Kevin Anderson will go for his second title of the year at the Erste Bank Open on Sunday.
The fifth-seeded Nishikori reached his third final of 2018 after beating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals.
A winner of 11 ATP events, Nishikori hasn't triumphed since winning in Memphis in February 2016. He has lost eight straight finals since.
Nadal to make comeback from knee injury at Paris Masters
PARIS (AP) — Top-ranked Rafael Nadal is slated to make his comeback from a knee injury at the Paris Masters next week.
Organizers said the 17-time Grand Slam Champion arrived in Paris on Friday. The Spaniard has a bye to the second round in Paris, where he will face either countryman Fernando Verdasco or Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
Sandgren upsets fifth-seeded Pouille in Stockholm
STOCKHOLM (AP) — American Tennys Sandgren upset fifth-seeded Lucas Pouille of France 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday to reach the second round of the Stockholm Open.
Sandgren hit 14 aces and won 90 percent of points on his first serve, breaking once in each set to wrap up the win in 1 hour, 16 minutes.
No. 8 Fernando Verdasco of Spain and Ernests Gulbis of Latvia also advanced. Verdasco beat Matthew Ebden of Australia 6-4, 6-2, while Gulbis ousted Swedish wild-card entry Mikael Ymer 6-4, 6-3.
Herbert saves 2 match points to reach Shenzhen final
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France saved two match points to upset seventh-seeded Alex de Minaur 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (8) and reach the Shenzhen Open final on Saturday.
Herbert, a doubles specialist who has won three Grand Slam titles including the French Open this year, saved the match points in the third-set tiebreaker at 6-5 and 7-6. He won the semifinal on his second match point.
He's into his second ATP singles final; he was runner-up in the other in 2015 in Winston-Salem.
Verdasco beats Murray at Shenzhen Open, reaches semifinals
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Fernando Verdasco advanced to the semifinals of the Shenzhen Open by beating Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4 on Friday.
Verdasco, who is now 3-13 against Murray after winning the last two, saved five of six break points and broke Murray's serve three times.
Verdasco will next face Yoshihito Nishioka, who defeated Cameron Norrie 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Murray worries about rules during break during US Open loss
NEW YORK (AP) — Andy Murray complained at the U.S. Open that his opponent might have flouted the rules during their 10-minute heat break Wednesday in what became a second-round loss for the 2012 champion.
BASTAD, Sweden (AP) — Fabio Fognini edged Fernando Verdasco for the first time on clay to reach the Swedish Open final against Richard Gasquet on Saturday.
Fognini won 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 even after losing two break leads in the deciding set of their 2-hour, 17-minute semifinal.
"Beating Fernando is really difficult. He is a great champion," Fognini said. "At the end, it is a lottery."
He lost his previous three matches with the Spaniard on clay.
Verdasco, Monfils advance in Argentina Open
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Fernando Verdasco and Gael Monfils won their first-round matches in the Argentina Open on Tuesday, and Australian Open semifinalist Kyle Edmund withdrew from the tournament due to illness.
The eighth-seeded Verdasco advanced on clay in Buenos Aires with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Thiago Monteiro of Brazil and next plays Guido Pella of Argentina.
Monfils beat Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas 6-1, 6-4. The Frenchman faces Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in the next round.
Top-seeded Thiem wins opener in Qatar
DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Top-seeded Dominic Thiem started the year with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 first-round win over Evgeny Donskoy of Russia at the Qatar Open on Monday.
Thiem saved two set points in the first set.
"It's nice to be top seeded," the fifth-ranked Austrian said. "The season is going to be very long, and I hope that I can have a good start here."
Fifth-seeded Thiem grinds past Gojowczyk at Paris Masters
PARIS (AP) — Fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem needed four match points to beat lucky loser Peter Gojowczyk of Germany 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday.
Having missed three chances to close out the match on his own serve, the Austrian finally won at close to midnight when Gojowczyk — serving to stay in the match — whipped a forehand that sailed just long.

PARIS (AP) — A combination of luck and perfect tennis helped Kei Nishikori reach the quarterfinals of the French Open.
The eighth-seeded Nishikori recovered from a nightmare opening set to beat Fernando Verdasco 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 on Monday and progress to his seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal, a record for a Japanese man.
"I couldn't do anything first set but I tried to play a little more heavy and a little more aggressive sometimes, and start working a little bit better," Nishikori said.

Keys made 51 unforced errors, 31 more than Martic.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (AP) — Roger Federer edged Steve Johnson 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) in a hard-serving duel at the BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday, setting up a fourth-round match against Rafael Nadal.
Federer fired 12 aces — his fastest serve registering 131 mph — and never faced a break point against Johnson, who reached 136 on the radar gun and fought off all four break points against him.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Andy Murray captured his first title of the year and became the first British man to win the Dubai Tennis Championships in its 25-year history when he defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday.
This was Murray's seventh final in his last eight tournaments, and 14th in his last 16 dating to last May in Madrid.
The only two tournaments he failed to make the final in that period were the 2016 U.S. Open and 2017 Australian Open.
