STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Denis Istomin upset two-time finalist Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) in the first round of the Stuttgart Open on Tuesday.
Kohlschreiber failed to create any break points and was forced to fend off six from the 100th-ranked Istomin. The Uzbek won in 1 hour, 41 minutes and next faces another German, Florian Mayer.

MUNICH (AP) — Defending champion Alexander Zverev will face three-time former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Munich Open final.
Top-seeded Zverev needed 1 ½ hours to beat fourth-seeded Chung Hyeon 7-5, 6-2 in Saturday's semifinals for his first win over the South Korean at the third attempt.
Sixth-seeded Kohlschreiber defeated Maximilian Marterer 6-2, 6-4 in just over an hour for his 33rd win at the clay-court tournament.
2014 champ Klizan rallies to surprise Mayer in Munich
MUNICH (AP) — Former champion Martin Klizan rallied to surprise home player Florian Mayer 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the Munich Open on Monday.
The 122nd-ranked Slovak, who won the clay-court tournament in 2014, was 3-0 down in the deciding set but recovered by winning the next six games to take the match in just over two hours.
Mayer says, "I ran out of steam in the end. I can't blame myself too much."
Bautista Agut ends losing run to reach Dubai 2nd round
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Roberto Bautista Agut ended a three-match losing streak when he beat Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Dubai Championships on Monday.
The third-seeded Bautista Agut hadn't won a match since taking his seventh ATP title in Auckland in January.
The Spaniard had to save four break points to serve out the first set. He lost his serve three times but broke Mayer five times to reach the second round.
Federer beats Tiafoe in 1st round at hometown Basel event
BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Top-seeded Roger Federer eased past United States teenager Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the Swiss Indoors on Tuesday.
Federer never faced a break point in the 61-minute match and won every point when his first service landed safely.
A seven-time champion at his hometown event in Basel, Federer clinched the victory when the 76th-ranked American put a backhand volley into the net.
HALLE, Germany (AP) — Roger Federer defeated Karen Khachanov 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to the final of the Gerry Weber Open for the 11th time on Saturday.
Federer will bid for his 92nd career title in what will be his 140th final against the fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev, who rallied to beat Richard Gasquet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 for his seventh title-decider.

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) — Tenth-seeded David Goffin won an all-Belgian contest to reach the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday as the first big tournament of the clay court season got underway.
Goffin broke Steve Darcis five times and needed just 72 minutes to post a 6-2, 6-1 win at the Country Club.
Tsonga returns from injury with win at Shanghai Masters
SHANGHAI (AP) — Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won for the first time since retiring from his quarterfinal match at the U.S. Open, beating Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2 Monday in the opening round of the Shanghai Masters.
Tsonga, who lost to Novak Djokovic in the Shanghai final last year, had 12 aces against Mayer and saved all five break points he faced.
The ninth-seeded Frenchman hasn't played since retiring with a knee injury against Djokovic at the U.S. Open last month after dropping the first two sets.
Germany beats Poland 3-2 in Davis Cup World Group playoff
BERLIN (AP) — Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Hubert Hurkacz 7-6(4), 6-4 6-1 to preserve Germany's World Group status with a 3-2 win over Poland in their Davis Cup playoff on Sunday.
Struff needed just over two hours to beat the 19-year-old Hurkacz in the deciding rubber at the clay court Rot-Weiss Tennis Club in Berlin.
Earlier, the 20-year-old Marcin Matkowski upset Florian Mayer 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 as Poland came from 2-0 down to level the tie.
Germany takes 2-0 lead over Poland in Davis Cup playoff
BERLIN (AP) — Jan-Lennard Struff and Florian Mayer won their respective matches to give Germany a 2-0 lead over Poland in the countries' Davis Cup World Group playoff on Friday.
Struff was made to work hard to beat the 20-year-old Kamil Majchrzak 6-7 (8), 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in three hours and 43 minutes, while Florian Mayer had a similarly tough time against 19-year-old Hubert Hurkacz, winning 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4, 7-5 in just under three hours.
Philipp Kohlschreiber to lead Germany against Poland
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Philipp Kohlschreiber will lead Germany against Poland in the Davis Cup playoffs despite a stress fracture in his right foot that forced him to miss the Olympics and to retire from his first-round match at the U.S. Open.
Kohlschreiber surprisingly appeared at the U.S. Open, only to quit against Nicolas Mahut. He is Germany's top-ranked player at No. 26.
