HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — A 10-year-old Henderson boy is the latest southern Nevada fatality attributed to the flu.
Prior to the boy's death Thursday, the Southern Nevada Health District had listed 13 flu deaths in Clark County this season, with 10 of those involving people age 50 or older.
The current flu season has been milder than last year's, which had caused 53 deaths in the region at this point.
Schools closed in northern Mississippi because of flu
TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — Two public school districts and one private school in northern Mississippi were closed Friday because of an increase in flu cases.
News outlets reported that the North Tippah School District and the South Tippah School District canceled classes because of the illness. Tupelo Christian Preparatory School was also closed.
The Tippah school districts reported nearly 350 students were absent Thursday.
North Carolina school system cancels classes due to flu
WEST JEFFERSON, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina school system is canceling classes because of a flu outbreak.
Ashe County Public Schools announced Thursday that classes are canceled for both students and staff Friday because of a local increase in flu cases. Superintendent Phyllis Yates says 452 students were out sick from the system's five schools and early learning center. Another 38 students who came to school were sent home.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina health officials say six people died from the flu last week, raising the death toll for the season to 35.
Of the 29 deaths reported by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday, officials say 26 victims were aged 65 and over.
For the same period last year, there were 130 flu deaths in the state.

The British Horseracing Authority said it was informed Wednesday night by the Animal Health Trust of three confirmed flu cases from vaccinated horses in an active racing yard.
They raced on Wednesday and the BHA says they potentially exposed the flu to a "significant number of horses from yards" in Britain and Ireland.
2 Alabama schools closed by influenza outbreak
MOULTON, Ala. (AP) — An elementary and middle school in northern Alabama will be closed for the rest of the week because of the number of cases of flu among students and employees.
Lawrence County Schools Superintendent Jon Bret Smith told news outlets that Moulton Elementary School and Moulton Middle School are closed Wednesday through Friday.
Smith said the school system is having trouble finding substitute teachers because of staff absences.
