FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — A former Ripon High School teacher has been sentenced to probation for having a sexual relationship with a student.
Twenty-nine-year-old Samantha Fitzpatrick earlier pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault of a student by a school staff member. Three other counts, including child enticement, were dismissed.
DA won’t charge officers in connection with in-custody death
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — A prosecutor won't file charges against three Fond du Lac police officers in an in-custody death.
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Tony said during a news conference Friday that the officers stopped 37-year-old Christopher Cary on Dec. 23 for not having a front license plate. They found torn baggies and cocaine residue in his car and discovered he was out on bail in a cocaine-related case.

1 dead after ATVs break through ice on Lake Winnebago
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — One man is dead after two all-terrain vehicles broke through the ice on Lake Winnebago in Fond du Lac County.
Authorities say a 55-year-old man, Peter Zacherl, was traveling in a group of ATV riders near the Fond du Lac River Monday about 9:30 p.m. when his vehicle broke through the ice. Another ATV carrying a 23-year-old Fond du Lac man and a 22-year-old woman was unable to stop and plunged into the water.
Future of ‘Halloween Killer’ to be determined in Fond du Lac

Man assisting in crash killed by suspected drunken driver
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — A man who stopped to help at the scene of a crash on a Madison area highway during a snowstorm died after being struck by a suspected drunken driver.
Monona police say the man who was killed stopped to assist a driver who had crashed on Highway 12 near the Yahara River about 7 p.m. New Year's Eve. The driver of the striking vehicle was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
Man under arrest dies in Fond du Lac
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — Police in Fond du Lac says a 37-year-old man has died after showing signs of medical distress in the back of a squad car.
Authorities say Fond du Lac police officers performed a traffic stop Sunday night. Authorities say the Fond du Lac man who was driving the vehicle was out on bail and was taken into custody without incident for violating his bond conditions.
Passer-by rescues 2 kids who fell through ice in Fond du Lac
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — Authorities in Fond du Lac are thanking a passer-by for rescuing two children who fell through the ice.
Authorities were called around 9 a.m. Sunday about two children trapped in a frozen pond on Fond du Lac's south side. Responders were on their way when they learned a passer-by had entered the water to help rescue the children.

Burglars stealing guns from Fond du Lac County homes
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — Burglars targeting unlocked homes in Fond du Lac County have gotten away with 17 handguns, shotguns and rifles in the past two months.
The sheriff's office says there have been five documented daytime break-ins during that time-span, and the thieves even left cash and jewelry untouched in some instances.

Wisconsin Guard soldiers given send-off for Afghanistan
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Family and friends have packed Lambeau Field Atrium to send off 400 Wisconsin National Guard soldiers deploying to Afghanistan.
Soldiers with the 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry head to Afghanistan this winter to help protect U.S. advisers for Afghan security forces. The Appleton-based unit includes companies from Green Bay, Fond du Lac, Clintonville, Marinette, Waupun and Ripon.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — When Nicole Braatz met Paul Osterholm in 2001, she had no idea that more than 15 years later, he would be saving her life through a kidney donation.
Hired to run Marian University's Common Grounds when it opened, Osterholm, of Pipe, met Braatz, of Waupun, when she was commissioned by then-president of the university Dr. Richard Ridenour to design the logo and sign through her small business, Nicole's Sign Works.
400 from Appleton guard unit deploying to Afghanistan
APPLETON, Wis. (AP) — Nearly 400 National Guard soldiers from an Appleton-based unit are being deployed to Afghanistan.
The 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry will be providing security for coalition forces operating in the region. They'll train, advise and assist Afghan security forces.
WLUK-TV reports the soldiers will leave sometime this winter. Besides its Appleton headquarters, the unit also has companies in Clintonville, Green Bay, Fond du Lac, Marinette, Ripon and Waupun.
Enbridge Energy, Fond du Lac Band reach deal on Line 3

Business man sentenced to 14 years in scrap metal scheme
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — A judge has sentenced a businessman to more than a decade in prison for scheming to bilk a Fond du Lac firm out of $14 million.
Fond du Lac County Circuit Judge Robert Wirtz on Wednesday sentenced Sterling Kienbaum of Oshkosh to 11 years in prison and three years of extended supervision. Kienbaum pleaded no contest in January to racketeering and theft by false representation.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has declared a state of emergency in half-a-dozen counties as storms and floods continue to plague the state.
Walker issued the declaration Tuesday evening for Fond du Lac, Juneau, La Crosse, Monroe, Vernon and Washington counties. He declared a state of emergency in Dane County last week.
The declaration opens the door for federal assistance.
16 charged in Fond du Lac cocaine conspiracy ring
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — Sixteen people have been charged in a major drug trafficking ring in eastern Wisconsin.
Authorities say 127 pounds of cocaine and crack cocaine, worth $9.6 million, was distributed in the Fond du Lac area with the conspiracy stretching south to Milwaukee and beyond.
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) — Some residents of Fond du Lac were evacuated after a contractor struck a natural gas line.
Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue says fire crews were called just before 10 a.m. Wednesday after contractors replacing a house service hit the gas line, causing a leak.
Crews began canvassing the area to assess gas concentrations. Alliant Energy also responded.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A manufacturing company says it's agreed to pay $910 million for a Wisconsin marine products company that has more than 600 employees.
Brunswick Corporation, the parent of Fond du Lac-based Mercury Marine, is acquiring Power Products' Global Marine and Mobile, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
