FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A Fort Dodge man has been accused of scheming to defraud the Iowa Lottery.
Webster County court records say 39-year-old Nicholas Hanson is charged with money laundering, conspiracy to commit lottery fraud, extortion and marijuana possession. His attorney didn't immediately return a call Thursday from The Associated Press.
Officials say prison inmate arrested for 2017 killing
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Police have arrested a man already serving a 25-year federal prison sentence for the 2017 death of a central Iowa man whose body was found weeks after he went missing.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 28-year-old Armando Adame III was arrested Tuesday at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility on charges of first-degree murder and a weapons count in the death of 28-year-old Michael Bruce Johns.

Authorities say robbery suspect died when stolen van crashed
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a fatal crash on the west side of Fort Dodge ended the chase of a van stolen in Des Moines.
The van owner told Des Moines officers that he was uninjured when a man with a gun stole his van around 3:30 a.m. Thursday. A Story City officer spotted the van about an hour later on Interstate 35, but it didn't stop when the officer tried to pull it over.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Work is expected to begin next month to remove two dams spanning the Des Moines River in Fort Dodge now that officials have approved contracts worth more than $1.4 million after resolving permitting issues.
Authorities say 6 people hurt in Fort Dodge apartment fire
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say six people were treated for injuries after a fire at their apartment building in Fort Dodge.
Firefighters dispatched just before 7 a.m. Thursday saw flames coming from sixth-floor windows on the north and east sides of the Biltwell Apartments building. Fire officials say the blaze was caused by an unattended candle in a bedroom.
Man found dead after shootout was from Wall Lake
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a man killed after exchanging gunfire with officers in Webster County as a resident of Wall Lake.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation identified the man as 45-year-old Matthew Hurley.
Hurley died Monday night after engaging in a gunfight while driving away from officers who had been called to a disturbance just outside Fort Dodge. Hurley's vehicle eventually stopped in a field, and he was found dead inside.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Iowa authorities are investigating after a fleeing suspect died after exchanging gunfire with deputies from the Webster County Sheriff's office.
After a domestic disturbance was reported Tuesday morning, deputies spotted the suspect's vehicle and tried to stop it. But the Webster County Sheriff's office says the suspect fired at officers as the chase continued just outside Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Man gets 15 years for starting college parking garage fire
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — A man has been imprisoned for setting fire to a vehicle in the parking garage of Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge.
The Messenger reports that 22-year-old Terrell Adams had pleaded guilty to arson and criminal mischief. He was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison.
Council OKs using part of fireworks fines for big city show
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — The Fort Dodge City Council has approved a plan to use a portion of fireworks fines to help pay for a professional pyrotechnics show on Independence Day.
The Messenger reports that the council voted 5-1 for the plan Monday. The city will give to the fireworks show whichever is greater: $5,000 or half of the fireworks fines collected each year.

Iowa prison officials: Inmate dies after taken to hospital
FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Iowa prison officials say a 53-year-old inmate has died, and an autopsy has been ordered.
Officials say Michael Allen Kennedy suffered a medical emergency on Monday at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility and was taken to a local hospital emergency room.
Officials say Kennedy was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. Monday.

MANLY, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say an 80-year-old man has died in a grain bin accident in northern Iowa.
KIMT-TV reports the Worth County Sheriff's Office was called Monday morning to a possibly grain bin entrapment west of Manly. Deputies were joined by rescue crews from Manly, Kensett and Northwood as well as a helicopter ambulance from Fort Dodge.
