World War II soldier buried in Kansas 74 years after death
FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas soldier who was killed in World War II has been laid to rest at Fort Scott National Cemetery, 74 years after his death.
Army Pfc. Leslie Shankles, of Arcadia, was buried with full military honors on Wednesday at the cemetery in Bourbon County. A graveside service took place in the cemetery's committal shelter, with relatives, service members and veterans attending.
Remains of World War II soldier to be buried in Kansas
ARCADIA, Kan. (AP) — The remains of a Kansas soldier killed in World War II will be laid to rest in his home state Wednesday.
The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency says the remains of 33-year-old Army Pfc. Leslie E. Shankles, of Arcadia, are being returned to his family for burial in Fort Scott with full military honors.
Shankles remains were accounted for July 12. He was killed by enemy fire in October 1944 in Hurtgen Forest in Germany.
Fort Scott hospital closing revives debate over Medicaid
FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — The controversial issue of whether to expand Medicaid in Kansas has been revived after the announcement that another hospital in a small town will close by the end of the year.
Officials announced Monday that the 46-bed Fort Scott Mercy Hospital will close by the end of the year. That follows the closing of Mercy's hospital in Independence in 2015.

FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — Officials say Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott will close by the end of the year.
Mercy officials said on Monday that declining patient numbers and reduced reimbursements from government programs, which is the largest source of the hospital's revenue, led to the decision. The statement said hospital officials tried for months to find a way to keep hospital services in the community of about 7,800 people in southeast Kansas.

Mother says son’s drowning at Kansas foster home was neglect
FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — The mother of a 22-month-old boy who drowned in a fish pond at his foster parents' home in Fort Scott said she believes the death resulted from neglect, despite a decision from the state and local law enforcement that the drowning was an accident.
FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting near Fort Scott National Cemetery.
The KBI says a Bourbon County sheriff's deputy shot at a pickup late Thursday. The vehicle wrecked but the driver was not hit by gunfire.
A preliminary investigation found the incident began when a Bourbon County deputy tried to stop a pickup after it ran a stop sign. The trooper and Fort Scott police officers gave chase but eventually pulled back.
PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (AP) — Former Kansas City Star editor and University of Kansas journalism educator Tom Eblen has died. He was 80.
Jean Eblen says her husband died Saturday after a long illness.
Eblen joined the Kansas City Star in 1960 and rose through the ranks, serving as a reporter, copy editor, assistant city editor, city editor and eventually managing editor before serving as editor and general manager of the Fort Scott (Kansas) Tribune.

Kansas man sentenced to life for 6-month-old’s death
FORT SCOTT, Kan. (AP) — A southeast Kansas man was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years in the death of a 6-month-old boy.
District Court Judge Mark Ward on Friday sentenced 22-year-old Anthony Michael Anderson of Fulton. He was convicted in May in Bourbon County of first-degree murder and child abuse.
The child died in April 2015 after he was injured in Fort Scott.
