Sophomore Luka Garza on a tear for surging Hawkeyes
Iowa sophomore Luka Garza started this season in recovery after a nine-pound benign cyst was removed from his abdomen.

Iowa stuns No. 5 Michigan 74-59
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Michigan's Colin Castleton squared up for a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer — only to see the ball get stuck between the backboard and the rim in front of jubilant Iowa students clamoring to storm the floor.
It was the brick that encapsulated a lost night for Big Blue.
Luka Garza scored 19 points, Joe Wieskamp added 16 and Iowa stunned fifth-ranked Michigan 74-59 on Friday night, handing the Wolverines their second loss of the season.
No. 19 Iowa looks to get payback vs. No. 6 Michigan State
No matchup engendered skepticism of Iowa quite like its 90-68 loss at Michigan State in early December.
The Hawkeyes collapsed late in the first half, allowing the Spartans to reel off a staggering 40-11 run in a drubbing that felt like so many of the ones Iowa suffered through a year ago. The 19th-ranked Hawkeyes have looked like a different team of late — and they'd like nothing more than to prove it when they host the sixth-ranked Spartans (17-2, 8-0) on Thursday night.
Wieskamp scores 24, No. 23 Iowa routs Illinois 95-71
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Midway through the second half, an Iowa fan won a half-court challenge with a swish at the buzzer.

Freshman Joe Wieskamp matched a career high with 24 points and No. 23 Iowa shot 68 percent from the field in routing Illinois 95-71 on Sunday for its fifth straight victory.

Garza’s 22 lead No. 23 Iowa over Penn State 89-82
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — With plenty of time left on the shot clock and his team nursing a slight lead late, Iowa guard Jordan Bohannon probably could've been more patient.
His coach is glad he wasn't.
Bohannon stepped back with 36 seconds left and drained his fifth 3-pointer of the night to clinch the No. 23 Hawkeyes' 89-82 win over Penn State on Wednesday night.
"It's a good shot because he took it," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. "I would've been surprised if he didn't shoot it."
0-2 in the Big Ten, Iowa looks to hang in league chase
For the first time in 31 years, Iowa finished non-conference play unbeaten.
The 25th-ranked Hawkeyes also lost their first two Big Ten games, which essentially eliminated any margin for error in the conference race. It won't get any easier this week.
Iowa (11-2, 0-2 Big Ten) resumes Big Ten play on Thursday when it travels to face Carsen Edwards, the nation's second-leading scorer at 25.8 points a game, and Purdue (8-5, 1-1). The Hawkeyes then host No. 24 Nebraska on Sunday.
No. 24 Iowa survives lowly Bryant 72-67
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — It had been over three decades since Iowa had last finished its non-conference team schedule undefeated.
But the 24th-ranked Hawkeyes will resume Big Ten play next week at 0-2 in the league — and coming off one of their ugliest wins in years.
Tyler Cook scored 19 points with 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double in seven games and 24th-ranked Iowa held off lowly Bryant 72-67 on Saturday night.
Wieskamp scores 24, No. 23 Iowa routs Savannah State 110-64
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Once it became apparent that Savannah State posed no threat, Iowa seemed content to let Jordan Bohannon shoot his way out of a season-long slump.
Bohannon responded with his best game of the year — a positive sign with the bulk of the Big Ten season just over a week away.
Joe Wieskamp scored a career-high 24 points, Bohannon had 18 on six 3s and the No. 23 Hawkeyes blew past Savannah State 110-64 on Saturday for their fourth straight victory.
Cook scores 18, No. 23 Iowa beats Western Carolina 78-60
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa opened its final nonconference homestand by slogging its way to victory over a team that didn't play like it came in with nine losses.
Tyler Cook scored 18 points, Luka Garza added 15 and No. 23 Iowa beat Western Carolina 78-60 on Tuesday for its third consecutive win.
Freshman Joe Wieskamp scored 10 points for the Hawkeyes (9-2), who forced 26 turnovers and led by as many as 27 points.
"I thought we fought," Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said. "We had to fight."
No. 18 Iowa cruises past Iowa State, 98-84
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A 22-point loss at Michigan State left many wondering if the 18th-ranked Hawkeyes were for real.
Iowa answered its critics on Thursday night by stomping archrival Iowa State — almost literally — to snap a two-game losing streak.
Tyler Cook had 26 points and 11 rebounds, Isaiah Moss added 20 points and the Hawkeyes cruised to a 98-84 victory in a game marked by skirmishes in the first half and after the whistle.
Wieskamp helps No. 14 Iowa hold off Pittsburgh 69-68
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The first five games were a relative breeze for the 14th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes, who unexpectedly jumped into the Top 25 after an impressive trip to New York.
The rebuilding Pitt Panthers reminded Iowa that things typically aren't so easy against fellow high-major teams — even ones that didn't win a conference game last season.
No. 20 Iowa routs Alabama State 105-78
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa freshman Joe Wieskamp had something to prove after back-to-back bad showings.
The Hawkeyes' newest star was brilliant on Wednesday night, a display that showed why he earned the starting spot he's had since the opener.
Luka Garza scored 22 points, Wieskamp had a career-high 20 and 20th-ranked Iowa rolled Alabama State 105-78 on Wednesday night in its home debut as a ranked team.

Experienced Hawkeyes know D will lead the way in ’18-19

That won't matter much if the Hawkeyes play defense as poorly as they did a year ago.
Iowa’s Luka Garza has surgery for benign cyst in abdomen
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa sophomore Luka Garza had surgery Friday to remove a benign cyst in his abdomen and is out indefinitely.
Coach Fran McCaffery says Garza's procedure "went well." He says the Hawkeyes look forward to him rejoining the team this fall.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — No one was less surprised that Tyler Cook decided to come back to Iowa than coach Fran McCaffery.
The biggest question now for the Hawkeyes is whether Cook's return will be enough to get them back on track after a disappointing season.
Isaiah Moss returning to Iowa in ’18-19
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa guard Isaiah Moss says he'll be back for his junior season with the Hawkeyes in 2018-19.

Iowa PG Connor McCaffery receives hardship waiver
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa point guard Connor McCaffery has been granted a hardship waiver by the Big Ten, leaving him with four seasons of eligibility remaining.
The league announced Monday it had approved McCaffery's petition after he played just four games as a true freshman.
McCaffery, the son of coach Fran McCaffery, missed two games with a sprained ankle, eight games with mononucleosis and 19 games after undergoing a tonsillectomy in December.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa sophomore forward Tyler Cook has submitted paperwork for early entry into the 2018 NBA draft. He has not hired an agent, meaning he could possibly return to the Hawkeyes next season.
Cook announced Friday that he is seeking to gauge the league's interest after he led Iowa with 15.3 points and 6.8 rebounds a game in 2017-18.
The 6-foot-9 Cook also ranked seventh in the Big Ten with seven double-doubles and eighth in shooting percentage.
After each of coach Fran McCaffery's first seven seasons at Iowa, it felt as though the program was in position for better things in the future.
This year was an unexpected disaster, and no one seems to know where the Hawkeyes are headed this offseason.
Iowa City, Iowa – When teams are getting ready to take on Michigan State, the focus of the game plan is usually obvious.
From the athleticism of Miles Bridges to the low-post scoring of Nick Ward to the matchup nightmare that is Jaren Jackson Jr., the Spartans offer plenty for opposing teams to pay attention to in their preparation. That goes for Iowa, as well, which was set to host No. 4 Michigan State on Tuesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Bohannon, Cook lead Iowa past Minnesota 94-80
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Don't look now, but the Hawkeyes are inching toward respectability in the Big Ten — at least at home.

Garza, Cook lead Iowa past Wisconsin 85-67

Freshman Luka Garza scored 17 points with a career-high 16 rebounds, Tyler Cook added 17 points and Iowa walloped Wisconsin 85-67 on Tuesday night, snapping a two-game losing streak.
Iowa scuffling along with trouble on both ends of court
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — For much of coach Fran McCaffery's eight-year tenure at Iowa, things seemed to be moving in the right direction.
This season has gone sideways.
The Hawkeyes have surprisingly lost their way after returning almost the entire team that nearly made the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Granted, the starter they lost was Peter Jok, the Big Ten's leading scorer. But Iowa still looked like an up-and-coming squad with a bright future.
Bohannon, Iowa rally from 20 down, beat Illinois in OT
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Jordan Bohannon scored 29 points to help Iowa rally from a 20-point deficit for a 104-97 overtime win over Illinois on Thursday night.
It was Iowa's second-largest comeback in school history. The biggest comeback was 22 points, also against Illinois in 1987. Thursday's game marked the Hawkeyes' first Big Ten victory, and dropped the Illini to 0-5 in conference play.
Bohannon's three-pointer in overtime put the Hawkeyes up 99-90 and sealed the win.
Maryland uses second-half surge to beat Iowa 91-73
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Long before Maryland proved it had far too much depth for Iowa, Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery was slapped with a pair of technical fouls and banished from the court.
He was spared from watching his young team wither under a barrage of baskets from a variety of Terrapins.
Freshman Bruno Fernando scored a career-high 21 points, Anthony Cowan Jr. added 15 and Maryland pulled away to a 91-73 victory Sunday night to keep the Hawkeyes winless in the Big Ten.
Iowa pulls away from Colorado 80-73 for fourth straight win
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — It will be listed as a neutral site game in the record books, but Iowa took full advantage of the heavily partisan crowd in their favor Friday.
The Hawkeyes shot 58 percent in the second half to pull away from Colorado late and beat the Buffs 80-73 at the Sanford Pentagon Friday.
Drake, UNI look to upstage Hawkeyes and Cyclones
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa and Iowa State have never been swept in their annual doubleheader against Northern Iowa and Drake.
That might change on Saturday in Des Moines. The Hawkeyes (5-6) and Cyclones (7-2) are both at serious risk of dropping their neutral-floor matchups at Wells Fargo Arena.
Iowa State, which faces off against the Panthers, is 25 spots below Northern Iowa (15th) in the RPI rankings. Iowa (239rd) is 38 slots behind the Bulldogs.

Nunge leads Iowa past Grambling, 85-74 for 3rd straight win
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — For the first time this season, Iowa got into trouble.
The Hawkeyes survived thanks to their defense, holding Grambling scoreless for over six minutes after somehow falling behind at home and pulling out an 85-74 win Thursday night.
"I thought we played a team that was ready," Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said.
Hawkeyes drill Chicago State 95-62 in opener
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa passed its initial test without Peter Jok, rolling past Chicago State and displaying the kind of depth that would make most opponents jealous.
Freshman Luka Garza scored 16 points in his debut, Isaiah Moss added 14 points in 13 minutes and Iowa pounded Chicago State 95-62 on Friday night.
Tyler Cook and Jordan Bohannon added 12 points apiece for the Hawkeyes, who shot 59.6 percent in their first game without Jok, the Big Ten's leading scorer a year ago.
Iowa star recruit Connor McCaffery will play this season
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa freshman point guard Connor McCaffery has decided to play this season instead of redshirt.
The star recruit and son of Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery had planned to sit out as a freshman and play baseball for Iowa in the spring. But backup point guard Christian Williams left the program last week, leaving Iowa thin at that position.
