Swinney wins Bear Bryant award for 3rd time in 4 years
HOUSTON (AP) — Dabo Swinney won the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year award for the third time in four years Wednesday night, two days after leading Clemson to its second national championship in three years.
Swinney is the only three-time winner of the 33rd annual award, with Chris Petersen — the trophy holder in 2006 and 2009 at Boise State — the only other multiple winner.

Beamer, Brown head College Football Hall of Fame class
ATLANTA (AP) — Coaches Frank Beamer and Mack Brown were selected Monday for the College Football Hall of Fame, part of a class of 13 that includes former players Ed Reed and Calvin Johnson.
Brown won 244 games in a 30-year head coaching career at four schools that featured 16 seasons and a national championship at Texas.

Don Nehlen originally was going to plop down on his couch with a hot fudge sundae to watch West Virginia and former Big East rival Virginia Tech open the college football season on television.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia has fined assistant coach Shane Beamer $25,000 for accepting leaked game plan information two years ago while at Virginia Tech from a former Wake Forest assistant coach.
In a statement issued by Georgia Thursday, Beamer said then-Wake Forest assistant Tommy Elrod called him the night before the game in 2014 with "a few plays that he said Wake Forest might run."
Hokies AD: Ex-Wake assistant shared game plan in 2014
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock has confirmed that a former assistant coach-turned-broadcaster at Wake Forest provided a former Hokies assistant with "some game plan information" in 2014.
Babcock said in a statement Thursday that he has no indication that the information was shared with staff members or used during the game. Retired coach Frank Beamer also said he "had no knowledge of what is being alleged."

Virginia Tech will pay homage to Frank Beamer's attention to special teams when the Hokies play their first game in 30 years without the Hall of Fame coach on the sidelines.
This week, with Beamer's approval, a member of the Hokies' special teams will wear Beamer's retired No. 25 jersey instead of the unidentified player's regular number in the season opener against Liberty.
