MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian Foreign Ministry has accused the United States of trying to bar Russian wrestlers from an upcoming competition and claims the U.S. is unfit to host international sports events.
The ministry says the U.S. embassy in Moscow refused to arrange visa interviews for the Russian team ahead of the freestyle wrestling World Cup, which starts April 5 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Iran will compete in next year's freestyle wrestling World Cup in Iowa City, Iowa, after Turkey dropped out of the competition.
United World Wrestling announced the move on Thursday, although no reason was given why the Turks won't compete in the eight-nation event.

PARIS (AP) — Ohio State star Kyle Snyder scored a late takedown of Olympic gold medalist Abdusalim Sadulaev in the deciding match, and the United States won the world freestyle wrestling title Saturday night for the first time in 22 years.
Roseburg graduate Haydn Maley won the 220-pound U.S. Marine Corps Cadet and Junior Nationals Greco wrestling title with a 16-4 technical fall over Darrell Mason of Illinois this weekend in Fargo, North Dakota.
"My goal and dream is to be an Olympic champ in Greco," Maley said in an interview with USA wrestling after the match.
It's the second consecutive national greco title for the 2017 RHS grad and four-time state championship winner. Last year, Maley won the 195-pound title.
Haydn Maley placed second at the U.S. Marine Corps Cadet and Junior Nationals freestyle wrestling championships Tuesday in Fargo, North Dakota.
Maley was defeated by Missouri's Zach Elam in the 220-pound title match.
Fellow Roseburg wrestler Austin Harris fell 15-4 to Victor Marcelli of Ohio in the 182-pound wrestling match for seventh place.
GUELPH, Ontario, Canada — Former Roseburg High standout Chayse Jackson took fifth place in his first International Senior Men’s Freestyle Wrestling competition at the Canada Cup on July 8.
Seven countries were represented in the United World Wrestling tournament. Wrestling at 70 kilograms (154 pounds) Jackson won his first two matches by technical fall and 3-1 decision to reach the semifinals. Then he lost a 5-4 decision to Marino Mason of the USA.
Haydn Maley wins Pan Am Junior Championships wrestling greco-roman 96-kilogram gold medal
Haydn Maley of Roseburg won the 96-kilogram gold medal at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Lima, Peru.
Maley won the gold medal with a technical fall of Honduras' German David Zuniga Ordonez in the greco-roman wrestling competition.
The graduating senior from RHS will also be wrestling for a chance at the 96-kg freestyle wrestling title at the championships this weekend.
CHAMPAIGN — Dayton Hall became a state champion during the Illinois Freestyle Wrestling State Championships on May 7 at the University of Illinois Armory.
Hall, who competed in the 98-pound Schoolboy Division, won all six of his matches. He defeated Jordan Blew in a 10-0 technical fall in the championship match.
Lawmaker in Russia fights Olympic doping case at CAS
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — A lawmaker representing Vladimir Putin's United Russia party in parliament has appealed to sport's highest court against losing his 2008 Olympic title for doping with steroids.
Artur Taymazov filed an appeal that "seeks the annulment of the IOC decision" disqualifying him from the freestyle wrestling 120-kilogram event, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said on Thursday.

It’s not longer the Mick Pickford Freestyle Wrestling Tournament. Add Greco-Roman style wrestling to the name as that will be available for competitors this Saturday.

Iran defeats US at freestyle wrestling world cup
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's wrestling team Friday defeated the United States wrestling team to secure the gold medal at the Freestyle World Cup.
During the final matches, Iranian wrestlers sealed a 5-3 victory against their American guests in the western Iranian city of Kermanshah. State TV broadcast the matches live.
The Iranians won at the 57, 61, 65, 70 and 125 kilogram divisions, while the American wrestlers won 74, 86 and 97 kilogram divisions.
Female freestyle wrestling world champion killed in Egypt
CAIRO (AP) — A young female freestyle wrestling world champion has been killed in a road accident in Egypt, according to the Egyptian state news agency.
Reem Magdy, who won a bronze medal in the Cadet Wrestling World Championships held in Georgia in September, has been hit by a car while crossing the Cairo-Ismailia road, 11 kilometers from the Suez Canal city of Ismailia, state agency MENA reported on Saturday.
Devastating loss for champion US wrestler Jordan Burroughs
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — U.S. wrestler Jordan Burroughs came to the Rio Olympics expecting to build a legacy so great he could transcend his sport.
Instead, the defending Olympic and world champion was left to try and explain the unexplainable.
Burroughs, considered by many the best wrestler in the world, was stunned by Russia's Aniuar Geduev on Friday in the quarterfinals of men's freestyle wrestling.
