Off duty Fresno police officer killed by wrong-way driver
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Police in central California say an off-duty officer was one of two people killed when a pickup truck drove the wrong way on a highway.
The Fresno Bee reports Tuesday Fresno Police Officer Phia Vang died in the crash Monday on Highway 180 east of Fresno.
Authorities say the driver of the pickup was also killed. He was identified as 33-year-old Cameron Pryor, of Fresno.
Grimes grabs 19 rebounds; Fresno St. beats New Mexico 82-70

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Ghirardelli and Russell Stover have agreed to pay $750,000 in fines after prosecutors in California said they offered a little chocolate in a lot of wrapping.
Prosecutors in Sacramento, San Joaquin, Shasta, Fresno, Santa Cruz and Yolo counties sued the candy makers, alleging they misled consumers by selling chocolate products in containers that were oversized or "predominantly empty."

Officials say the man grabbed a woman's keys as she pumped gas Jan. 9 in southeast Fresno. The woman fought the suspect as he tried to get into her car and he ran from the scene.

Police say officers were dispatched Saturday afternoon following reports of a crash involving a postal truck in northwest Fresno. They determined the truck had been stolen and the suspected thief had sprinted from the scene.

The Fresno Bee says Julio Mendez was sentenced Friday — not for trespassing at the Chaffee Zoo in Fresno but for second-degree robbery involving an unrelated crime. He also was ordered to pay $300 in restitution.

Fresno police fatally shoots armed man during standoff
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Police in Fresno have fatally shot a man armed with an ax during a standoff that lasted several hours at an apartment complex.
Deputy Police Chief Pat Farmer said SWAT officers fired several "lethal and nonlethal rounds" at the 29-year-old man on Saturday. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Gov. Jerry Brown announced this week that he appointed another court official to fill the vacancy created by the departure of Fresno County Judge James M. Petrucelli.

Mother charged in death of kid killed by train in California
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A woman was arrested on felony child neglect charges after her 8-year-old daughter was killed while crawling under a train in California so the family wouldn't miss a bus home, authorities said.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Tuesday that Joy Collins, 44, on Monday urged her daughter and her 9-year-old son to crawl under the idling train. The boy made it but the girl was reluctant to get under the freight train.
California teen struck, brother grazed in possible drive-by
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Police say a 17-year-old boy was struck in the shoulder and his 7-year-old brother suffered a graze wound in a possible drive-by shooting at a home in central California.
Investigators in Fresno say a family of eight was inside the house and ducked to the ground when more than a dozen rounds were fired through the walls late Friday.
Police Lt. Larry Bowlan says the teen was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The 7-year-old was treated at the scene.
Utah charges accused California man of securities fraud
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A California man who was the founder and president of a natural gas and oil company in Utah faces charges in that state alleging he defrauded investors.
The Deseret News reports that the Utah Attorney General's Office on Friday charged 60-year-old Spencer Kent Barton of Fresno with multiple counts of securities fraud and other crimes.
