This year's Cheez-It Bowl might be lucky to have 30 combined points.
California and TCU have two of the nation's best defenses and are among the worst offenses, so points will likely be at a premium Wednesday night at Chase Field, home of baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks.

Coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday that he couldn't elaborate but that an MRI during the summer found something in the early stages that was OK then. But the 6-foot, 294-pound Broadnax didn't play Saturday at West Virginia after showing signs related to the condition, including weakness in his arm.

TCU and K-State both need to win 3 of 4 to get bowl eligible
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU has never had a four-game losing streak in Gary Patterson's 18 seasons as head coach.

After a loss in Patterson's home state of Kansas to the only Big 12 team without a conference victory until then, TCU (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) is back home Saturday and trying to avoid an unprecedented streak against Kansas State.
Struggling teams meet when TCU heads to Kansas on Saturday
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas is accustomed to muddling through long losing streaks in the Big 12.
It's a much rarer and just as unwelcome occurrence for TCU.
The Horned Frogs have dropped two straight and four of their last five, including last week's blowout loss to Oklahoma. Their most dynamic playmaker was just booted off the team and, at 3-4 and 1-3 in the Big 12, coach Gary Patterson's team faces a tough road to reach bowl eligibility.
That path begins with Saturday's visit to the Jayhawks.

Robinson 5 TDs for No. 16 TCU in 55-7 win over Southern U
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Shawn Robinson is in a much different position for No. 16 TCU this season. He will remain the No. 1 quarterback as long as he is producing on the field.
The dual-threat sophomore, who won his only start last year filling in for an injured senior, is now 2-0.
Robinson threw touchdowns to three different receivers and ran for two more scores while playing only the first half as No. 16 TCU opened the season with a 55-7 win over Southern University on Saturday.
No. 16 TCU not looking past opener vs SWAC team Southern
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU coach Gary Patterson is doing his best to keep everyone from looking ahead to a much-anticipated game in Week 3.

TCU’s new QB will have talented skill players around him
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Shawn Robinson won his only start last season, making the sophomore TCU's most experienced quarterback.
Coach Gary Patterson has always said he judges quarterbacks by what they do on Saturdays. Robinson, filling in that mid-November day at Texas Tech for injured Kenny Hill, got a key victory that helped the Horned Frogs get into the Big 12 championship game on way to another 11-win season.
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — TCU coach Gary Patterson didn't bring Shawn Robinson to Big 12 media days to declare the young quarterback a starter.
"Superstitious reasons," Patterson said Monday about having the sophomore with one career start as one of five players there for the Horned Frogs. "I kidded I didn't bring Kenny (Hill) the first year and we went 6-7, then you bring him and we went 11-3. So I didn't want to skip a year."

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Former TCU defensive back Jeremy Modkins has been named cornerbacks coach after four seasons as a defensive analyst.

They did it again Thursday night, rallying from 21-3 down to beat No. 15 Stanford 39-37 behind Kenny Hill, who passed for two touchdowns, ran for another, and even caught one. Cole Bunce kicked the winning 33-yard field goal with just over 3 minutes left after Stanford had retaken the lead.
NORMAN — The bad blood might have started long before, but the OU-TCU story that has drawn attention this week dates to Nov. 11.
That was the date of OU’s last meeting against TCU in Norman. The Sooners won in convincing fashion, but not without a little controversy.
Young Oklahoma coach Riley faces veteran TCU coach Patterson
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley won't slow down to reflect.
That's just now how he operates.
The youngest coach in the FBS has won more games in his first year than any of Oklahoma's greats; he passed Barry Switzer and Chuck Fairbanks last week with a victory over West Virginia. With one more win, he would become just the fifth FBS coach with no previous head-coaching experience at a four-year college to claim at least 12 victories in his debut season.
TCU coach doesn’t believe Oklahoma pregame throw an accident
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — TCU coach Gary Patterson doesn't believe it was an errant or accidental pass that hit safety Niko Small while going on the field for pregame warmups the last time the No. 10 Horned Frogs played No. 2 Oklahoma.
Patterson also takes exception to how Sooners coach Lincoln Riley responded about quarterback Baker Mayfield nailing Small, the TCU starter who has missed the last two games since playing that night in Norman.

FORT WORTH - All No. 12 TCU has to do to get into the Big 12 championship game is beat one-win Baylor at home Friday.

Freshman QBs step up as Big 12 season winds down
AMES, Iowa (AP) — The final week of Big 12 play in 2017 might serve as a preview of what's to come in 2018.
As many as five of the conference's 10 teams could have a freshman behind center this weekend, including title game hopeful TCU. Baylor, Texas, Iowa State and Kansas State could also ask a rookie quarterback to step up as the regular season winds down.
Lot of Big 12 bowls, Oklahoma title game opponent still TBD
The Big 12 already has a higher percentage of bowl-eligible teams than any other conference.
Now the Big 12 gets one more weekend to find out if the league can add to that and make it eight out of 10 teams in bowl games. Plus, No. 3 Oklahoma needs an opponent for the conference's revived championship game — easily determined if No. 10 TCU wins at home against Baylor.
"It's an opportunity to get to 10 wins," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "That's what we're trying to get accomplished."

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Shawn Robinson became the first true freshman quarterback to start a game for No. 11 TCU in coach Gary Patterson's 17 seasons as head coach.
Even after a 27-3 win over Texas Tech that got the Horned Frogs closer to a spot in the Big 12 championship game, Patterson kept to his policy of not letting freshmen talk to the media after the game.
The victory speaks loud enough for Robinson and the Horned Frogs (9-2, 6-2 Big 12, No. 12 CFP).
No. 11 TCU faces Texas Tech with Big 12 title hopes
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — TCU coach Gary Patterson got hit in the head by a frozen water bottle when the 11th-ranked Horned Frogs last played at Texas Tech two years ago.

QB Hill, top LB Howard among the questionable for No. 11 TCU
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — No. 11 TCU is apparently hurting after the loss that dropped the Horned Frogs out of a share for the Big 12 lead.

Guerin Emig: That Baker Mayfield respects TCU might be a surprise, but it shouldn’t be
NORMAN — Baker Mayfield lives for grudges, we’re led to believe, and so it was interesting that after last week’s win over TCU, he shared a warm conversation with Horned Frogs linebacker Ty Summers before doing anything else.
