Yankees set HR record, beat Red Sox 8-5 for 100th win
BOSTON (AP) — The Bronx Bombers lived up to their nickname by hitting another big number. A couple of them, in fact.
Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton connected as the playoff-bound Yankees set the major league record for most home runs in a season, beating the Boston Red Sox 8-5 Saturday for their 100th win this year.
"I'm happy for them. They work really hard at their craft, and it's a result of a lot of people having success," manager Aaron Boone said.
Heads Up! Strong-armed fan hits Yanks’ Stanton with HR ball
BOSTON (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton has been plunked plenty of times. But by his own home run ball?
The New York Yankees star homered over the Green Monster during Saturday's 8-5 win, connecting in the seventh inning against the Boston Red Sox. Stanton then got quite a surprise from a strong-armed fan while rounding second base at Fenway Park.
A man wearing a black T-shirt heaved the souvenir from his first-row seat on top of the left-field wall, and the ball took a hop and bounced off Stanton.
Another term: Judge has MLB’s top selling jersey again
NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge again has baseball's most popular jersey.
MLB says the Yankee slugger's No. 99 was the top seller for the second straight season. Judge beat out 2017 AL MVP Jose Altuve, who will be trying to repeat as a World Series champion with the Houston Astros next month.
Judge and the Yankees will face Oakland in the AL wild-card game Wednesday. Teammate Giancarlo Stanton was ninth in jersey sales in his first season with New York.
Jeter’s Marlins finish as poorest home draw since 2004 Expos
MIAMI (AP) — The 25th anniversary of the Marlins franchise was seen by the fewest fans at home in team history.
The Marlins became the first major league team to draw fewer than 1 million fans at home since the 2004 Montreal Expos, beating the Cincinnati Reds 6-0 Sunday before 13,595 to complete the Miami portion of their schedule in Derek Jeter's first season as chief executive officer.
Voit gives Yankees pair of home run records on 1 swing

The brawny first baseman hit a two-run shot to straightaway center field in the second inning Thursday night against Boston, giving the Yankees a major league-record 12 players with at least 10 home runs this season.
"It's pretty cool," Voit said. "That's kind of a cool stat to be a part of."

"It's a lot to take in," Stanton said. "A lot of things go into this — where I'm at now. I grew up over there."

A look at what's happening around the majors today:
SOUTH BEACH STANTON
Giancarlo Stanton returns to Marlins Park for the first time since Miami traded him to the New York Yankees in December. Stanton spent his first eight years with the Marlins and was the NL MVP last season when he hit 59 home runs.
Stanton went 0 for 7 with four strikeouts in mid-April when the Marlins visited Yankee Stadium. The slugger has 32 homers this year and 299 in his career going into this two-game series.

Didi Gregorius, Miguel Andujar and Greg Bird also connected as New York moved 31 games over .500, matching a season high. Andujar had three hits and three RBIs and Gregorius also drove in three runs.

LEADING OFF: DeGrom-Severino in NYC, Bumgarner-Kershaw in LA

The Subway Series finishes with a marquee matchup at Yankee Stadium. Mets ace Jacob deGrom, who leads the majors with a 1.77 ERA, faces Luis Severino, who tops the AL with 15 wins. The game is a makeup from a rainout last month. Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton has homered in five of his last six games.
Sabathia, Stanton lead Yankees over Rangers 7-2
NEW YORK (AP) — Traded to the Yankees after the 2014 season, Didi Gregorius had the unenviable task of following Derek Jeter as New York's new shortstop.
A smooth fit, it's been.
Gregorius homered and turned in a pair of nifty defensive plays as the Yankees defeated the Texas Rangers 7-2 on Sunday.
Gregorius has been praised by his manager and teammates for his play on the field and his leadership in the clubhouse. Just like his predecessor.

Severino helps Yankees sweep White Sox with 7-3 win

It's beginning to pay off, too.
Severino pitched seven effective innings in his first win in a month, Giancarlo Stanton hit his first grand slam in four years and the Yankees swept the Chicago White Sox with a 7-3 victory on Wednesday night.
CHICAGO (AP) — A couple of costly errors at third base over the weekend contributed to Miguel Andujar being the designated hitter the last two games.
There's no issue with the 23-year-old's bat, though.
Andujar homered and singled in the go-ahead run in the 13th inning, Sonny Gray won in his first relief outing since 2013 and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Tuesday night.
BOSTON (AP) — Steve Pearce homered three times, the second a three-run drive in an eight-run fourth inning as the Boston Red Sox rallied from an early deficit to beat the New York Yankees 15-7 on Thursday night and take a season-high 6½-game lead in the AL East.
NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge immediately knew something was wrong. He'd been hit by pitches before, and they never felt like this.
A day later, the New York Yankees slugger could smile. Sort of. His fractured right wrist will put him out for three weeks, not the rest of the season.
"It could've been a lot worse," Judge said Friday night.
BOSTON (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi went from out-of-contention Tampa Bay to a Boston Red Sox team with the best record in the major leagues.
"I'm super excited to be here," Eovaldi said Thursday before a series opener against Minnesota. "Expectations are definitely high."
Eovaldi was acquired Wednesday for minor league left-hander Jalen Beeks as the Red Sox added pitching depth for the final two months of regular season.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — About the only thing Gary Sanchez was quick to do Monday night was accept the blame for his lack of effort.
Sanchez failed to hustle on a pair of key plays, Jake Bauers hit a three-run homer and scored with some nifty baserunning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Luis Severino and the New York Yankees 7-6.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Following another strong start from Shane Bieber, Indians closer Cody Allen managed to hit the brakes just in time during yet another tense ninth inning.

NEW YORK (AP) — After a slow start, Giancarlo Stanton has been on a roll for the Yankees.
But he also said there's another gear he can kick into, too.
Stanton hit a three-run homer, CC Sabathia pitched six effective innings, and the Yankees beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2 on Wednesday.
Rookie second baseman Gleyber Torres left the game in the top of the fifth inning because of tightness in his right hip and afterward was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right hip strain.

A position-by-position look at the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers going into the World Series, starting Tuesday evening at Dodger Stadium:
Astros: Yuli Gurriel. The 33-year-old rookie from Cuba has made a pretty smooth transition to the majors after signing a $47.5 million, five-year contract. A right-handed hitter with pop, he's solved a problem spot for Houston at first base and provided a clutch bat in October, batting .366 in the AL playoffs.
New Marlins owner Jeter mum on future of Stanton, Mattingly
MIAMI (AP) — Back in the ballgame, Derek Jeter says he'll learn on the job as he tries to lead the Miami Marlins out of the wilderness.
