Thomas, Froome target Tour de France in 2019
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome, the current and former Tour de France champions, are planning to compete in the 2019 edition of the race in what could be Team Sky's final bid for cycling's biggest prize.
Froome will not defend his Giro d'Italia title as targets a record-tying fifth win in the Tour, while Thomas is bidding for back-to-back victories.
Froome coy about Giro defense as 2019 route revealed
MILAN (AP) — Chris Froome could have another attempt at winning both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France as the British rider has not ruled out the possibility of defending the title he secured in Rome this year.
Next year's Giro features three individual time trials and seven summit finishes in a balanced but testing route which ramps up into what Froome termed a "brutal, brutal second half to the race."
With Yates’ win at Vuelta, British domination is complete
PARIS (AP) — When Lance Armstrong won the last of his seven Tour de France titles back in 2005, there was not a single British rider on the starting line. The face of cycling has dramatically changed since, with Armstrong erased from the records books for doping and British cycling now ruling the Grands Tours.
Grand Tour sweep for Britain as Yates wins Spanish Vuelta
MADRID (AP) — Simon Yates won his first Grand Tour title after a largely ceremonial ride into Madrid in the final stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday, giving British riders a sweep of the season's three biggest races.
The 26-year-old Englishman was dominant throughout the three-week race across Spain, thriving on the toughest climbs and the flattest routes to secure the victory after a last stage in which riders didn't attack the leaders under cycling tradition.
Belarusian rider Siutsou suspended after failing doping test
AIGLE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Cycling Union has suspended Belarusian rider Kanstantsin Siutsou after he failed a doping test.
Siutsou joined the Bahrain-Merida team last year and won the Tour of Croatia in April. He planned to race in the Giro d'Italia in May but withdrew after fracturing a bone in his neck during training.
The UCI says the 36-year-old Siutsou tested positive for the banned blood-booster EPO on July 31 and has been suspended pending a full hearing.
Australian cycling star Simon Gerrans to retire
SYDNEY (AP) — Simon Gerrans, who won two stages of the Tour de France and is the only Australian to have won two of cycling's one-day classics, has announced he will retire at the end of the 2018 season.
ROME (AP) — Now that Chris Froome has wrapped up the Giro d'Italia title, his focus will quickly switch to matching the record with a fifth Tour de France title — unless a doping case gets in the way.
Froome is racing under the cloud of a potential ban after a urine sample he provided at the Spanish Vuelta in September showed a concentration of the asthma drug salbutamol that was twice the permitted level.
Froome maintains he has long struggled with asthma.
ROME (AP) — Winning three Grand Tours consecutively was already enough to cement Chris Froome's place in cycling history.
The way in which he won this Giro d'Italia, though, adds an extra dimension to the achievement.
The Kenyan-born British rider bounced back from two early crashes to storm into the lead two days from the end with an 80-kilometer (50-mile) solo attack in the three-week race's toughest stage.
CERVINIA, Italy (AP) — Chris Froome effectively sealed victory in the Giro d'Italia on Saturday by holding his only remaining challenger in check up the final climb of the three-week race.
The four-time Tour de France champion takes a 46-second lead over defending champion Tom Dumoulin into Sunday's mostly ceremonial finish in Rome and is poised to win his third consecutive Grand Tour, matching the achievements of cycling greats Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault.
BARDONECCHIA, Italy (AP) — Chris Froome produced one of the great performances of his career, attacking alone on a gravel road up a grueling climb to win the 19th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Friday and claim the overall leader's pink jersey.
The four-time Tour de France champion launched his solo attack up the three-week race's highest climb with 80 kilometers (50 miles) to go and rode clear amid banks of snow above the tree line.
PRATO NEVOSO, Italy (AP) — Simon Yates remained in the lead of the Giro d'Italia but the British rider's advantage over closest rival Tom Dumoulin was slashed in half after the tough 18th stage on Thursday.

ISEO, Italy (AP) — Elia Viviani sprinted to his fourth victory of this year's Giro d'Italia on Wednesday, and Simon Yates maintained his hold on the leader's pink jersey after the 17th stage.
The Italian won a bunch sprint through rain at the end of the hilly, 155-kilometer ride from Riva del Garda to Iseo, holding up four fingers as he crossed the line.
Sam Bennett, who was looking for his third victory, was second and Niccolo Bonifazio was third.
ROVERETO, Italy (AP) — Simon Yates is still in control of the Giro d'Italia after the British rider limited his losses to closest rival Tom Dumoulin in the individual time trial on Tuesday.
Dumoulin was more than two minutes behind Yates heading into the 16th stage and, as a time trial specialist, it was seen as his best chance of taking the pink jersey from the Mitchelton-Scott cyclist.
However, Yates still leads Dumoulin by 56 seconds heading into the final five stages.
As the Giro d'Italia heads into the final week, it's not really surprising that a British rider leads the overall standings.
The surprise is that the leader is Simon Yates and not four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome.
Froome arrived at the Giro bidding to become the third person to win three Grand Tours in a row. But he crashed in training before the opening time trial, lost time in a split on Stage 4 and injured himself again in a second crash four days later.
SAPPADA, Italy (AP) — Simon Yates made it a hat trick of wins in the Giro d'Italia on the 15th stage Sunday and the British rider consolidated his overall lead as the race heads into its final week.

MONTE ZONCOLAN, Italy (AP) — Chris Froome responded to his critics with a fantastic ride up Monte Zoncolan to win the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday.
Nevertheless, British compatriot Simon Yates consolidated his overall lead.

OSIMO, Italy (AP) — Overall leader Simon Yates gained a few more seconds on closest rival Tom Dumoulin by winning the 11th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Wednesday.
The Mitchelton-Scott rider attacked with about 1.5 kilometers remaining in the 156-kilometer leg from Assisi to Osimo and held off Dumoulin on the steep climb to earn his second stage victory of the race.
Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome lost more time on the leaders and his chances of winning are disappearing.
GUALDO TADINO, Italy (AP) — Overall leader Simon Yates gained three bonus seconds in the 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Tuesday but it was a difficult day for his Mitchelton-Scott team as Esteban Chaves dropped out of contention.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Chris Froome got off to a rocky start in his quest to win a third consecutive Grand Tour title, crashing during a training run ahead of Friday's opening stage of the Giro d'Italia and drawing blood around his right knee.

PARIS (AP) — Chris Froome will have support rider Geraint Thomas alongside him again as he pursues a fourth Tour de France title in five years.

Thomas recently returned in the Route du Sud and gives Team Sky a second overall option if Froome struggles.
MILAN (AP) — Tom Dumoulin won the 100th Giro d'Italia in dramatic fashion Sunday, reclaiming the overall lead in a final-stage individual time trial.
