Red Sox, outfielder Gorkys Hernandez reach minor league deal
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Free agent outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and the Boston Red Sox have reached agreement on a minor league contract.
The deal Wednesday includes a spring training invite to big league camp with the World Series champions.
The 31-year-old Hernandez hit 15 home runs last season while batting .234 with 40 RBIs in 142 games for San Francisco. In 2017, he didn't hit a homer in 310 at-bats.
Giants Joe Panik, Sam Dyson reach agreement on 1-year deals
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Second baseman Joe Panik reached agreement on a $3.85 million, one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Friday to avoid salary arbitration, while reliever Sam Dyson received a $5 million, one-year deal.
The Giants, with new baseball operations chief Farhan Zaidi now in charge, did not tender contracts to outfielder Gorkys Hernandez or reliever Hunter Strickland, allowing the pair to become free agents.
Bumgarner’s single in 12th lifts Giants past Padres 5-4
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy was out of options after emptying his bench of position players three innings earlier and with the potential winning run at third base in the 12th inning. Then, he turned to his best hitting pitcher.
It worked perfectly.
Madison Bumgarner had the first game-ending hit of his career, a pinch-hit single that drove in Gorkys Hernandez, and lifted the Giants to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.
Newcomb goes 6 strong, Albies provides jolt as Braves top SF
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Atlanta Braves are threatening to turn a tight NL East race into a runaway finish.
Sean Newcomb pitched six strong innings, Ozzie Albies sparked the offense with two extra-base hits and Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 4-1 on Monday night.
The Braves moved five games ahead of Philadelphia atop the NL East and reduced their magic number to 15 with their fourth win in five games.
The Giants lost their ninth straight, matching their worst skid since 2006.
Diamondbacks fall into first-place tie with Colorado in West
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks are costing themselves crucial late-season wins by missing scoring opportunities.
Two straight shutouts by the San Francisco Giants and Arizona dropped into a first-place tie with Colorado in the NL West.
Pinch-hitter Gorkys Hernandez singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning, lifting the Giants to a 1-0 win on Tuesday night.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Their early 3-0 lead long gone, the San Francisco Giants got some big plays late to had the free-falling San Diego Padres their sixth straight loss.
Gorkys Hernandez hit a go-ahead home run leading off the 12th inning, Will Smith struck out the last four San Diego batters and Austin Slater had a big play at first base as the Giants beat San Diego 5-3 Monday night.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Back-to-back wins over the slumping Colorado Rockies won't get the San Francisco Giants back into contention in the NL West.
It did, however lighten the mood in manager Bruce Bochy's clubhouse, and that's a good thing considering how things have gone over the past month.
Denard Span singled home Gorkys Hernandez with two outs in the 14th inning, lifting San Francisco over Colorado 4-3 on Tuesday night.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — A big 10th inning for the San Francisco Giants got off to a running start by distracting Milwaukee Brewers slick-fielding shortstop Orlando Arcia.
Gorkys Hernandez took off from first at right about the same time that pinch-hitter Kelby Tomlinson lined a bouncer to short. It probably would have turned into a double play if Arcia wasn't covering the bag at second.
CHICAGO (AP) — San Francisco Giants center fielder Denard Span is out of the starting lineup with a sprained left thumb.
Span was injured when he got jammed on a pitch during Sunday's 8-3 loss at St. Louis. Giants manager Bruce Bochy says Span is available to pinch run or play defense, but likely will be out of the lineup again Tuesday.
Span is batting .258 with two homers and eight RBIs in 23 games during his second season with San Francisco.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — After a forgettable April, the San Francisco Giants have begun a possible turnaround in just the right place — at the home of their biggest division rival.
Brandon Belt and Gorkys Hernandez each singled in a run in the 11th inning after Jeff Samardzija's excellent start, and the Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 on Wednesday night to take two of three in the series.
San Francisco went 9-17 in April and remains in last place in the NL West.
PHOENIX (AP) — Gorkys Hernandez didn't know until he got to the ballpark that he'd be in the lineup.
Obviously he was ready, though.
With Denard Span out due to tightness in his hip, Hernandez took over in center field and the leadoff spot, driving in four runs to lead the San Francisco Giants past the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4 on Tuesday night.
Hernandez singled home two runs in the second inning and doubled in two more in a five-run fifth.
Giants lose lead in ninth, fail to gain ground on Dodgers
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ryan Schimpf hit a go-ahead three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning, and the San Francisco Giants' bullpen gave up a lead and chance to gain ground on the division-leading Dodgers in a 6-4 loss to the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.
