Wawrinka saved two set points in each set on his way to winning 7-6 (10), 7-6 (1) over the fourth-seeded Khachanov, who at No. 24 is ranked 64 places above Wawrinka.
Wawrinka's quarterfinal opponent will be either defending champion Damir Dzumhur or Guido Pella.
Cecchinato wins Croatia Open for 2nd title

Play was never able to resume on the outside courts as intermittent rain fell from just before 7 p.m., leaving a number of other matches incomplete.
STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Roger Federer defeated Guido Pella 6-4, 6-4 on Friday to advance to the Stuttgart Open semifinals.
Federer was too good for his opponent even though the 75th-ranked Argentine produced one of his best matches on grass.
With the Swiss great serving for the match, Pella forced two break points for some late drama. But Federer answered with four points in a row to set up a meeting with Nick Kyrgios.

GENEVA (AP) — Top-seeded Sam Querrey lost his opening match at the rain-hit Geneva Open on Thursday, falling to Guido Pella of Argentina 7-5, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (4).
It was the 13th-ranked American's third straight quick exit from a clay-court event before the French Open begins on Sunday. Querrey also lost to Pella last month in Houston.

Rublev to play Monfils in Doha Open final
DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Andrey Rublev of Russia saved a match point to reach his second career ATP Tour final with a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (2) win over Guido Pella of Argentina at the Qatar Open.
The 39th-ranked Rublev has had trouble with his serve throughout the tournament. He posted 11 double faults in Friday's match, and 33 overall in the four matches he's played this week.

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) — Kazakhstan is on the verge of sending last year's Davis Cup champion Argentina out of the top-tier World Group after winning Saturday's doubles rubber.
Timur Khabibulin and Alexander Nedovesov recovered from losing the first set to beat Argentina's Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 in just under 3 1 /2 hours.
That gives Kazakhstan a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five match.

ASTANA, Kazakhstan (AP) — Argentina and Kazakhstan finished the first day of their Davis Cup World Group playoff at 1-1 on Friday.
Kazakh veteran leader Mikhail Kukushkin lost the first set against Guido Pella but responded strongly to win the opening singles 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-4 in nearly four hours.
Pella was consistently strong in the first two sets before mistakes crept into his game, the Argentine posting 23 unforced errors in the fourth against 14 for Kukushkin.
Georgia Tech’s Eubanks advances past Fritz at Atlanta Open
Georgia Tech senior Christopher Eubanks made the most of his wild-card entry into the Atlanta Open, earning an opening-round 7-6, 6-4 win over fellow American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday.
Eubanks, the two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, held serve throughout the match — winning the first set 7-5 in a tiebreak and then earning an early break in the second before closing out the match on his serve.

Nick Kyrgios of Australia beat Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in straight sets to reach the second round of the French Open.
The 18th-seeded Kyrgios hit 20 aces on his way to the 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory.
Kyrgios argued lengthily with the umpire in the second set when a key call went against him when he had a break point for 5-4, but he regained his focus to take the tiebreaker with an ace, on his third set point.
MUNICH (AP) — Alexander Zverev defeated Argentine qualifier Guido Pella 6-4, 6-3 to win the BMW Open and his first title on home soil Sunday.
The 20-year-old Zverev fired eight aces and converted three of eight break points to win in 1 hour, 12 minutes for his third career title.
The 158th-ranked Pella was bidding to become the first qualifier to win the Munich title since Martin Klizan in 2014. It was his second ATP Tour final after losing to Pablo Cuevas in Rio de Janeiro last year.

Del Potro heads Argentina’s Davis Cup team for Croatia final
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Juan Martin Del Potro will lead Argentina's team for the Davis Cup final against Croatia later this month in Zagreb.
Argentina captain Daniel Orsanic named Del Potro on Wednesday along with Federico Delbonis, Guido Pella and Leonardo Mayer. It's the same team that beat Britain in the semifinals.
Orsanic says "picking the team was again difficult, but we went with players who have delivered."
Gael Monfils pulls out of Paris Masters with rib injury
PARIS (AP) — Frenchman Gael Monfils has pulled out of next week's Paris Masters because of a rib injury.
The eighth-ranked Monfils, a U.S. Open semifinalist this year, has already qualified for the season-ending ATP finals in London next month. He is making his first appearance at the finals.
Tournament organizers said Friday that Spaniard Marcel Granollers has also pulled out of the Paris Masters, without giving a reason.
