TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Rocker John Mellencamp has been awarded the Woody Guthrie Prize.
The Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, announced Wednesday that Mellencamp will be presented with the award during an Aug. 30 ceremony. He is the fifth recipient.
The annual prize is given to an artist who best exemplifies the spirit and life work of Woody Guthrie by speaking for the less fortunate and serving as a positive force for social change.
GUTHRIE, Okla. (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey says a 3.1 magnitude earthquake has been recorded in central Oklahoma.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
The agency says the earthquake was recorded at 9:58 p.m. on Saturday, about 8 miles (12.5 kilometers) east of Guthrie. The temblor was recorded at a depth of nearly 5.5 miles (8.7 kilometers).
GUTHRIE, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma City man was killed when the pickup truck he was driving crashed while being pursued by police.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 31-year-old Stephen Sloniker died in the crash shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday in Guthrie.
The OHP reports that Sloniker was being pursued by several law enforcement agencies when he drove through an intersection and crashed into the bank of a creek.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 3.4 quake struck shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday near Guthrie, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Oklahoma City. Magnitude 3.0 ad 2.3 quakes were recorded in the same area later Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
Prosecutor clears Oklahoma cop in Taser shooting, fire death
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma police officer was "justified and appropriate" in using his Taser to shoot a man who died after he burst into flames and got into his gasoline-soaked truck, a state prosecutor wrote in a letter released Friday clearing the officer in the man's death.

Online Logan County court records show Special Judge Susan Worthington on Monday ordered 45-year-old Nathan LeForce to be tried in the death of 40-year-old Logan County Deputy David Wade.
Wade died on April 18 while serving an eviction notice at a home near Mulhall, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Oklahoma City. Wade was shot several times, including in the face.
GUTHRIE, Okla. (AP) — Officials may soon decide the fate of a deteriorating underground bridge and locker rooms in a city just north of Oklahoma City.

No injuries were reported in Tuesday's blaze in Logan County, about 30 miles north of Oklahoma City. Guthrie Fire Chief Eric Harlow says the wildfire destroyed two mobile homes, several outbuildings and many bales of hay.

2 killed in separate vehicle crashes on Oklahoma roadways
GUTHRIE, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says two people have died in separate vehicle crashes on state roads.
The OHP says 65-year-old Alvin Lee Graves of Guthrie died after a motorcycle accident near Guthrie and 75-year-old Larry Dollarhide of Broken Bow was killed in a pickup truck crash near Broken Bow.
An OHP report says Graves died at a hospital after the motorcycle he was driving crashed on Highway 33 Friday afternoon. A passenger was hospitalized in fair condition.
Oklahoma officials work to decrease obsolete bridges
GUTHRIE, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Transportation Commission has decided that an 80-year-old bridge over a creek in Guthrie will be replaced as part of a continued effort to decrease the number of obsolete bridges in the state.
In 2004, 17 percent of the state's highway bridges were rated as structurally deficient. That number is now a little less than 5 percent, which are all to be replaced or repaired by the end of the decade.
