10-man AC Milan draws 0-0 at relegation-threatened Bologna
ROME (AP) — Following a week in which it was eliminated from the Europa League and hit with a financial fair play penalty, AC Milan didn't do much to help itself with a 0-0 draw at relegation-threatened Bologna in Serie A on Tuesday.
Milan finished with 10 men after midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko was sent off after picking up his second yellow card in three minutes.
Gonzalo Higuain and Hakan Calhanoglu both missed chances for Milan.
AC Milan goes on spending spree to dominate transfer market
ROME (AP) — It's the type of freewheeling spending spree that has been the domain of Middle East sheikhs and Russian oligarchs in recent years.
Only this time it's the new Chinese owners of AC Milan who have been dominating football's transfer market.
The signing of prized Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci from six-time defending Serie A champion Juventus on Friday boosted Milan's offseason spending to 211 million euros (nearly $250 million) — easily the most in Europe.
Leverkusen midfielder Calhanoglu forgoing salary during ban
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu will forgo his salary and bonuses for the duration of his four-month FIFA suspension for breach of contract.
"Bayer had nothing to do with the events at the time. But the club is hit hard by the penalty in a sporting and financial way. That's why it's evident to me not to harm the club any further," Calhanoglu said in a Leverkusen statement Tuesday.
CAS upholds 4-month ban for Leverkusen midfielder Calhanoglu
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu will serve a four-month ban imposed by FIFA for breach of contract.
The 22-year-old Turkey international must also pay 100,000 euros ($108,000) in compensation to Turkish club Trabzonspor, which he agreed to sign for when he was a teenager, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Thursday.
CAS said the FIFA ban, which was frozen pending the appeal verdict, "is reinstated with immediate effect."
Hertha Berlin stumbles in 3-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — Hertha Berlin missed out on a chance to go third in the Bundesliga as it slipped to a 3-1 loss at Bayer Leverkusen on two goals from Hakan Calhanoglu on Sunday.
There was more than a hint of bad luck for Hertha in two of Leverkusen's goals, with Omer Toprak's opener coming after an attempted clearance hit a Hertha player.
For the second, a contentious handball decision against Hertha's Marvin Plattenhardt allowed Calhanogulu to score from the penalty spot.
With Hoeness back in charge, Bayern returns to winning ways
BERLIN (AP) — With Uli Hoeness back in charge again, Bayern Munich bounced back from two straight defeats to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 at home and keep pace with Bundesliga leader Leipzig on Saturday.
Hoeness, who returned as president the night before, watched as Thiago Alcantara and Mats Hummels scored to ease the pressure on coach Carlo Ancelotti with the side's first win in four games across all competitions.
