LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Blade Runner 2049" may have been the top choice for moviegoers this weekend, but the long-anticipated sequel failed to generate the soaring box office returns industry watchers expected.
Despite positive reviews and certified star-power in Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, the dystopian thriller took in $32.7 million during its debut weekend, which hardly makes a dent in its reported $150 million budget.
NEW YORK (AP) — "Blade Runner 2049" had the pedigree, the stars and the stellar reviews. But even though the highly touted sequel had seemingly everything going for it, something didn't click with audiences.
The big-budget, handsomely crafted sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic opened surprisingly weak at the North American box office. According to studio estimates Sunday, "2049" grossed $31.5 million, a poor start for a movie that cost at least $150 million to make.

"Ryan?" Ford asked his "Blade Runner 2049" co-star after a brief pause, dutifully playing the part of the "slightly aloof 75-year-old legend."

And it was just one night out of a dozen that they'd be spending their sleeping hours soaking wet to try to execute a set piece that even Ridley Scott thought too ambitious.
