Board rejects ‘Practice Tolerance’ for inside courthouse
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Adams County supervisors have rejected a request to have sign placed in the courthouse saying, "Practice Tolerance."
The Hastings Tribune reports that the board voted unanimously last week against the proposal from Hastings residents Jane and Margaret Marsh. The sign would have included symbols from different religions.
Hastings campus president announces retirement plan
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — The president of Central Community College-Hastings intends to retire effective June 3.
William "Bill" Hitesman took the job in 2002. He's also served as vice president over the skilled and technical sciences and business and entrepreneurship/incubator divisions.
The district plans to conduct a national search for Hitesman's successor.
April trial set for driver accused of killing pedestrian
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A trial is scheduled to begin April 1 for a driver accused of killing a pedestrian in Hastings.
Adams County District Court records say the date was set Tuesday after 46-year-old Nen Lam, of Hastings, pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide while driving under the influence and driving under the influence, two prior convictions.

9 additional Nebraska libraries to host makerspaces
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — An initiative that turns rural Nebraska libraries into makerspaces for creative and entrepreneurial projects has been expanded to nine additional communities.
Gov. Pete Ricketts and the Nebraska Library Commission announced Tuesday that the libraries have been selected to host "Nebraska's Library Innovation Studios: Transforming Rural Communities."
The newly selected libraries are in Kimball, Beatrice, Hastings, Chadron, Blue Hill, Grant, Plainview, Verdigre and Laurel.

Man in fraud case told to pay more than $130K in restitution
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A 61-year-old Hastings man has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison for committing health care fraud.
Federal court records say Randy Kirby was sentenced last week and ordered to pay restitution of more than $130,000.
Hastings official takes plea deal in Lincoln assault case
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A Hastings city official accused of assaulting an Uber driver in Lincoln has taken a plea deal.
Lancaster County Court records say 37-year-old Steven Kostner pleaded no contest Thursday to misdemeanor assault. Prosecutors had lowered the charge from felony terroristic threats in exchange for Kostner's plea. His sentencing is scheduled for March 14.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska sheriff who lived at the county jail has retired and moved out of the courthouse that served as his home for the last 36 years.
Arraignment set for man accused of vehicular homicide
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — An arraignment has been scheduled for a Hastings man accused of driving while intoxicated when his vehicle ran into a pedestrian, killing him.
Adams County Court records say 46-year-old Nen Lam is charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence and two related DUI crimes. The records don't list the name of an attorney who could comment for Lam. The arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.
Several Nebraska cities to celebrate National Adoption Day
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — National Adoption Day will be celebrated in several Nebraska cities this weekend.
The day is being recognized Saturday at county courthouses in Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Norfolk and Omaha. The day brings not only adoption finalization ceremonies, but family entertainment. At the Adams County Courthouse in Hastings, the event will include carnival-themed entertainment, cake and ice cream, a magic show and balloon making for children having their adoptions finalized.
Woman accused of taking nearly $250K from Hastings employer
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A woman is accused of embezzling nearly $250,000 from her employer in Hastings.
Adams County Court records say 34-year-old Crystal Maser is charged with felony theft. Her attorney didn't immediately return a call Friday from The Associated Press.
The records say Maser used a Dutton-Lainson Co. credit card to buy items for herself and pay her bills. The items included clothing, jewelry and furniture.
Omaha police, fire departments helping Toys for Tots program
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The city of Omaha and its fire and police departments are teaming up with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program to help make the holiday season memorable for less-fortunate children.

Authorities say Tom Osborne’s brother died in collision
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a 78-year-old Hastings man died in a collision west of Hastings.
John "Jack" Osborne (OZ'-burn) was the younger brother of former Nebraska congressman and football coach Tom Osborne.
The Adams County Sheriff's Office says Jack Osborne was headed south on a county road Sunday around 7:50 p.m. when he didn't halt at a stop sign and collided with a westbound vehicle on U.S. Highway 6.
Nebraska elementary assistant principal directs curriculum
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — When the new Adams Central Elementary School opened this fall, there were only a few staff members who knew just about every student and teacher.
Shannon Nepple, who has been the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment with the district for the past four years, is one of them.

Man dies after being struck by vehicle in Hastings
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a driver was arrested after his vehicle hit and killed a man on a Hastings street.
The accident occurred around 3:40 a.m. Sunday. Police say 27-year-old Anthony Epp was fatally struck as he was either walking or skateboarding on the street. He lived in Hastings.
The 46-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Adams County Court records don't show that he's been formally charged.

WWII rocket, grenade found in Nebraska destroyed
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska State Patrol says its hazardous device technicians have destroyed a World War II-era rocket and grenade found this week in south-central and southeastern Nebraska.
The patrol says the first device — a rocket — was found by the owners of a farm near Odell while cleaning out an out-building. The grenade was found in Hastings by workers at Hastings City Iron and Metal. Both devices were found on Wednesday.
Authorities say 2 people died after Adams County collision
HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say two people have died after a collision in south-central Nebraska's Adams County.
The accident occurred around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, south of Hastings. The Adams County Sheriff's Office says a westbound vehicle driven by 18-year-old Parker Short collided at an intersection with a northbound vehicle driven by 20-year-old Isaiah Zapata. They and one of Zapata's passengers were hospitalized.

HASTINGS, Neb. (AP) — A pathologist says a 72-year-old Hastings man died of natural causes — a heart attack — after a physical altercation.
Authorities say Stephen Cash died at a Hastings hospital July 10. He'd been taken there after being stricken following a fight with another man over ownership of a bicycle. Toxicology test results are still pending.
Police arrested the other man on suspicion of assault by mutual consent. Online court records don't yet show that he's been formally charged.
