Arizona State, in its first season under coach Herm Edwards, hopes to use its trip to the postseason as a launching pad to similar success.
The Sun Devils and No. 19 Bulldogs each find themselves on the ascent heading into their Las Vegas Bowl matchup on Saturday.

Apple Cup tops this week in the Pac-12
Here are some things to watch this week in the Pac-12 Conference:
Arizona State riding 3-game winning streak into Oregon
Arizona State heads to Oregon this weekend needing a win to stay alive in the Pac-12 South.
If the Sun Devils (6-4, 4-3 Pac-12) can take care of the Ducks, then win at rival Arizona in the regular-season finale, the team will go to the league championship game. Or, they could seal a trip a week early if they win at Oregon, combined with a Utah loss at Colorado and an Arizona loss at Washington State.
Wilkins, Benjamin lead Sun Devils past Bruins
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State quarterback Manny Wilkins emerged from an emotional Saturday with a victory that keeps his team in great shape in the crowded Pac-12 South.
The three-year starter, in his final home game, ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and the Sun Devils held off UCLA 31-28.
Win over UCLA crucial to Sun Devils’ Pac-12 South hopes
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — After consecutive wins over USC and Utah, Arizona State finds itself in the thick of the Pac-12 South race. The Sun Devils need a victory over UCLA on Saturday to stay there.
Arizona State (5-4, 3-3) would win the Pac-12 South title by beating UCLA, Oregon and Arizona in its final three games of the season.
No. 16 Utes look to solidify hold on Pac-12 South
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — That 0-2 start to the Pac-12 season seems like ancient history to Utah now.
The No. 16 Utes (6-2, 4-2 Pac-12) have won four straight, topping 40 points in each of the wins, and sit alone atop the Pac-12 South heading in to Saturday's game at Arizona State.
"They have got a senior-laden defense with a lot of experience over there," Sun Devils coach Herm Edwards said. "They don't give up a lot of points, averaging about 16 points a game. They have done a nice job up there."
USC to start new QB against feisty Arizona State
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The recent history between Arizona State and Southern California has been light on competitive games, with only one of the past seven games decided by fewer than 21 points.
That could change when the Sun Devils and Trojans meet Saturday as new Arizona State coach Herm Edwards has shown a preference for one-possession games.
Shenault’s 4 TDs lead No. 21 Colorado past ASU 28-21
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Besmirch the unblemished Buffaloes all you want, 21st-ranked Colorado proved it belongs in the rankings with a 28-21 win over Arizona State on Saturday.
Knocked for a weak schedule with their opponents a cumulative 1-16 entering the weekend, the Buffaloes (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) delivered big on both sides of the ball.
Arizona State at No. 21 Colorado tops the Pac-12 this week

Sun Devils beat Beavers for Edwards’ first Pac-12 win

Sun Devils look to extend Beavers’ long road losing streak
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State coach Herm Edwards is pointing to Oregon State's offense as a reason the Sun Devils cannot afford to overlook the Beavers when they meet Saturday night.
"There's a team when you watch them on tape they play in a lot of high-scoring games, believe it or not," Edwards said. "They have actually scored 128 points thus far in four games."
It's Oregon State's defense that helps make Arizona State (2-2, 0-1 Pac-12) such a big favorite.
Arizona State travels to No. 10 Washington in Pac-12 opener
SEATTLE (AP) — Herm Edwards arrived back on the Arizona State campus sometime around 3:30 a.m. last Sunday. Rather than going home and not sleeping, Edwards immediately went to work at finding the reasons behind the Sun Devils' first loss of the season.

Arizona limps to 0-2 start in Kevin Sumlin’s first season
Arizona was supposed to be the team in the Grand Canyon State that would have the easiest time transitioning to a new coach. Kevin Sumlin was taking over a program that had a Heisman Trophy front-runner, an explosive offense and the potential to be better on defense.
But while No. 23 Arizona State has won its first two games under Herm Edwards, Arizona is 0-2 under Sumlin and facing a litany of issues.
No. 23 Arizona State off to quick start under Edwards
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The knock on Herm Edwards' hiring at Arizona State was his time away from the game. Edwards had not coached since being fired by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008 and spent eight years at ESPN, so the thinking was that there was no way he could be successful as a college coach.
Wrong. Edwards may not have been on the sideline, but he was studying the game, even coaching it — at least in his mind — in the television studio.
Arizona State thriving under coach Herm Edwards so far
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Herm Edwards had a larger-than-life TV personality with ESPN, shouting out opinions multiple times a day. While coaching the NFL's New York Jets, he had the "You play to win the game!" rant that people still bring up today.
Arizona State rallies to beat No. 15 Michigan State 16-13
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State kicked off the Herm Edwards era with a blowout of UTSA. Beating a school from a smaller conference could be expected.
Rallying from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter against the nation's No. 15 team? Now that's a statement.
Brandon Ruiz kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired and the Sun Devils notched a marquee win early in Edwards' tenure, knocking off No. 15 Michigan State 16-13 on Saturday night.
No. 15 Michigan State faces road test against Arizona State

WHAT'S AT STAKE?
Michigan State is looking to bounce back from a shaky opener in what should be a tough road game. The Spartans trailed Utah State at home in the fourth quarter before scoring late in the 38-31 victory. Arizona State rolled over UTSA 49-7 in its first game under coach Herm Edwards.
ASU looking to build on opening win with Michigan St up next
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The hype began when Herm Edwards interviewed for the job at Arizona State. It ratcheted it up when he was officially hired and continued through the offseason, into preseason camp.
Everyone wondered how the former NFL coach would fare in the unfamiliar world of college football after eight years in a television studio.
Would the Sun Devils' outside-the-box move be a stroke of genius or explode in their faces?
Arizona State opens Herm Edwards era with 49-7 rout of UTSA
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Herm Edwards was a big winner in his return to the sidelines as head coach at Arizona State.
And he wasn't at all satisfied.
Manny Wilkins threw for four touchdowns, two to N'Keal Harry, and Arizona State routed UTSA 49-7 on Saturday night.
"It was sloppy," Edwards said. "... I didn't like I what I was watching a lot of times. The big plays are one thing but you play against good football teams you want to have sustained drives."
Herm Edwards ready for debut as Sun Devils host UTSA
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Herm Edwards does not want this to be all about him, but for now anyway, any talk about Arizona State football begins and ends with the affable new coach.
Edwards left a seat in the ESPN studio to return to the coaching sidelines for the first time since he was fired by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. He hasn't coached in college since he was defensive backs coach at San Jose State in 1989.
Herm Edwards breathing life into Arizona State program
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State's hiring of Herm Edwards was met with more than one raised eyebrow.
Edwards had not coached since being fired by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs in 2008, spent the past nine years in a TV studio for ESPN and his previous experience as a college coach came nearly three decades ago as an assistant.
More eyebrows went up and a bit of ridicule was directed toward Tempe when the Sun Devils said the program would operate with an NFL-like approach.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Herm Edwards is back in college football for the first time since 1989, but the Arizona State head coach understands success starts with a dominant defensive front.
"The one that always holds up in defense is you've got to knock the quarterback down," Edwards said at Pac-12 media day. "You've got to storm the castle and hit the guy."
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Pac-12 went 1-8 in its bowl games last season, leading to a winter of external criticism and internal soul-searching for most of its programs.
The league also extended its national title drought to 14 years, the longest in the Power Five. Athletic directors openly worried about the Pac-12 falling farther behind the other big conferences in revenue and in exposure from its television network.
