Man found dead on snowmobile trail was blindfolded, shot
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say an Aurora man found dead on a snowmobile trail in Hibbing was blindfolded, marched into the woods and shot twice in the face for allegedly pursuing another man's 17-year-old girlfriend.
The body of 33-year-old Joshua LaValley was found Sunday along the Mesabi Trail.
3 arrested in death of man found along snowmobile trail
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says three people have been arrested in the death of a man whose body was found on a snowmobile trail in Hibbing.
Authorities were called to the Mesabi Trail Sunday afternoon where they found the body of 33-year-old Joshua LaValley, of Aurora. Officials have not said why homicide is suspected as the cause of death or the circumstances involved.
ArcelorMittal to assume management of Hibbing Taconite

Bond set in fatal Christmas Day shooting in Hibbing
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — The man accused of shooting two people, one of them fatally, on Christmas in northeastern Minnesota is being held on $500,000 bond.
Twenty-nine-year-old Jerome Spann made his first court appearance in St. Louis County court Monday. He's charged with second-degree murder and assault in connection with a shooting in Hibbing.
Authorities arrest suspect sought in Hibbing homicide
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say the suspect in a fatal shooting in Hibbing has been arrested in St. Paul.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says the suspect was booked into the Ramsey County Jail Friday on suspicion of murder and other possible charges.
Police have been searching for the suspect since the shooting on Tuesday that left one man dead and another man injured.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says police responded to a report of a shooting on Christmas about 7:30 p.m. in Hibbing. Officers found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men was pronounced dead at Fairview Range Medical Center. Authorities say injuries to the other man are not life threatening.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says officers responded to 911 calls reporting the shooting shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police found two people were shot, one fatally.
A male victim was taken to Fairview Range Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The other victim's injuries were not life-threatening. He was treated and released.
Cleveland-Cliffs, Steelworkers reach contract agreement
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. and the United Steelworkers have reached a tentative agreement on a new, four-year contract.
The Cleveland-based company and the union announced the deal Sunday. The proposed contract takes effect Monday and covers about 1,800 union workers at Cliffs' Tilden and Empire mines in Michigan and its United Taconite and Hibbing Taconite mines in Minnesota.
Chapel founder fills worship space with flowers for 50 years
SIDE LAKE, Minn. (AP) — Every Sunday that the Chapel of the Pines Church in Side Lake has been open, Mariann Lowen has faithfully filled it with hand-picked flowers.
And she's done so for the past 50 years.
"I think it adds a lot to the service," she said with a grin. "We have beautiful trees and pine needles and it's a lovely site, but the building is kind of barren. So I bring a quilt and a wood carving with Bible verses on it to make it look a little more homey."
Jury convicts uncle in death of baby in St. Louis County
VIRGINIA, Minn. (AP) — A jury has convicted the uncle of a baby who was killed in a house fire in St. Louis County.
KBJR-TV reports the jury found 26-year-old Jesse Lee Bonacci-Koski of Hibbing guilty Thursday on two counts of manslaughter. He'll be sentenced Oct. 24.
Record-breaking September cold hits northern Minnesota
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — The mercury is falling in northern Minnesota, with cold air bringing in a record-breaking chill.
The National Weather Service says temperatures plunged below the freezing mark in several locations early Thursday.
It was 28 degrees (-2 Celsius) in International Falls, breaking the Sept. 6 record of 31 (-0.5 C). It was 29 degrees (-1.6 C) in Hibbing, exceeding the bone-chilling lowest low of 33 (0.5 C) for the same date.
Motorcyclist killed in crash with deer in northern Minnesota
CHISHOLM, Minn. (AP) — A motorcyclist was killed when he struck a deer head-on in northern Minnesota.
The Minnesota State Patrol says the crash happened late Saturday on Highway 169 near Chisholm in St. Louis County.
The crash threw 20-year-old Devin James Eskeli of Hibbing from his motorcycle. He died at the scene.
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — A former priest is building pine caskets and urns in a century-old church in Minnesota with a goal of making funerals more affordable to his customers.
Mark Coen's company, Simple Pine Box, sells handmade caskets for $650. He also sells handmade pine urns for $125, KARE-TV reported.
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — State authorities are offering a reward for information in the death of a northern Minnesota man killed in his home last year.
Sixty-year-old Brian Joseph Nelson was stabbed and found dead in his house behind The Bottle Shop liquor store last July in Hibbing. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said Thursday it will pay $25,000 for information that moves the case forward.

20-year sentence for Hibbing man who surreptitiously shot videos of girls showering
An Iron Range man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for using a cellphone to record short videos of girls showering or getting dressed in their bedrooms.
Kevin J. Petroske, 36, of Hibbing, was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Minneapolis on numerous child pornography charges. A jury convicted him in August after a three-day trial.

Hibbing native Echo Helstrom Casey, Bob Dylans first serious girlfriend and widely viewed as the inspiration for his 1963 song Girl From The North Country, died last week in California. She was 75.
2 Iron Range stores with same owner sell big Powerball payouts in same drawing
Two stores on the Iron Range with the same owner each sold tickets worth $250,000 for a Powerball drawing last week, lottery officials announced.
The winning tickets were sold at Short Stop convenience stores about 70 miles apart at 1815 E. Sheridan St. in Ely and at 1121 E. Howard St. in Hibbing. The Short Stop chain, based in Virginia, Minn., has 17 outlets across the Iron Range and in Duluth.
Deadly blazes at year’s end make for rise in Minnesota fire deaths in 2017
The number of fire fatalities in Minnesota this year could climb to 64, after residential fires in Hibbing, Lakeville, Ely and Marshall left seven dead over the long holiday weekend.
If fire is determined to be the cause of death in all four blazes, 2017 will log the highest number of state fire deaths since 2002, said State Fire Marshal Bruce West.
This year has been a very, very tragic holiday season, said West, whose office is assisting local authorities in the death investigations.

2nd child dies after Hibbing fire, bringing death toll to 4
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a second child has died after a house fire at the home of a retired firefighter in Hibbing, bringing the death toll to four.
The Hibbing Fire Department says the fire broke out early Tuesday at the home of retired fire Capt. Steve Gillitzer. Authorities say the 67-year-old Gillitzer and his wife, 63-year-old Pat Gillitzer, died in the fire. Two of the couple's grandsons, 9-year-old Todd Gillitzer Jr. and 3-year-old Isaiah Anteus Adams, died at hospitals.
Brrr! After record snow, bitter cold ahead for northern US
ERIE, Pa. (AP) — Freezing temperatures and below-zero wind chills socked much of the northern United States on Wednesday, even setting a record in a Minnesota city so cold it's called the Icebox of the Nation, and will stay put for days to come as snow-hardened Erie digs out from a record snowfall.
Forecasters warned of hypothermia and frostbite from arctic air settling in over the central U.S. and spreading east.

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — An arctic wave is bringing record cold to northeastern Minnesota.
The National Weather Service reports International Falls and Hibbing set record low temperatures on Wednesday morning. International Falls — the self-proclaimed "Nation's Icebox" — plunged to 37 degrees below zero, breaking the old record of 32 below set in 1924, while Hibbing bottomed out at 28 below, breaking the old record of 27 below set in 1964.
Minnesota house fire kills 2 adults, 1 child
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Officials say a house fire in northern Minnesota has killed two adults and a child. Another child is in critical condition.
A house fire early Tuesday on the Iron Range killed two adults, left two children with life-threatening injuries and another youngster less seriously harmed, authorities said.
The blaze in the 200 block of 42nd Street E. in a Hibbing neighborhood broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m., the Fire Department said.
Fire crews arrived to find one juvenile outside but four other people trapped inside, fire officials said.
Death of 71-year-old Hibbing area woman ruled homicide
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say the death last week of a 71-year-old Hibbing woman has been ruled a homicide.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says Courtney Lee Fenske was found dead in her home just southeast of Hibbing last Wednesday. Sheriff's deputies found Fenske's body while doing a welfare check.
Investigators believe she died sometime between Sunday, Nov. 26, and Monday, Nov. 27.
30-year sentence for decapitation slaying
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — A Grand Rapids woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for her role in the decapitation of a Hibbing man.
The 23-year-woman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. She's accused of helping Joseph Thoresen assault and kill 20-year-old David Haiman after telling Thoresen that Haiman had sexually assaulted her. The Associated Press generally doesn't name people who say they're victims of sexual abuse.
Hibbing police investigate slaying of business owner
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Police say the man found dead in a house in Hibbing is a homicide victim.
WDIO-TV (http://bit.ly/2vcKQeO ) reports 60-year-old Brian Joseph Nelson was stabbed and was found dead in a house behind The Bottle Shop liquor store Monday. Authorities say Nelson is a long-time Hibbing resident and business owner.
Police say the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation. There's no immediate word on any suspects.
ZIM, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a Hibbing man died when a train struck a road grader in the northeastern Minnesota town of Zim.
The St. Louis County sheriff's department identified the victim as 67-year-old Walter Maki Jr., who was driving the grader. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
No train cars derailed as a result of the collision.

HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a 7-year-old girl was one of two people in a crash that injured five other people on the Iron Range.
The State Patrol says the crash happened late Saturday night when a pickup truck collided with a car about 15 miles east of Hibbing on U.S. Highway 169 at St. Louis County Road 25.
Killed were 7-year-old Snowden Bothwell, of Hibbing, who was a passenger in the car, and the 26-year-old pickup truck driver, Jason Gates, of Superior, Wisconsin.

June Elaine Kaul Crowley Bjerke was born on July 22, 1922, in Hibbing, Minn. She graduated from Hibbing High School and in May 1943, graduated from Ancker Hospital Training School for Nurses, in St. Paul. In 1944, she enlisted as a Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp and served in tent hospitals in France and Germany during WWII.
Woman pleads guilty to role in decapitation of Hibbing man
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — A woman has pleaded guilty to her role in the decapitation of a Hibbing man.
She is expected to be sentenced to roughly 30 years in prison in connection with the death of 20-year-old old David Haiman of Hibbing.
As part of her plea agreement, she'll also have to testify against 36-year-old Joseph Thoresen of Deer River.

Authorities investigate non-fatal police shooting in Hibbing
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Authorities are investigating a non-fatal officer-involved shooting in Hibbing.
It happened just before 1 p.m. Friday when two Hibbing police officers responded to a 911 call of a person with a gun.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man outside a residence who was carrying a gun. Officers opened fire, striking the man.
Hibbing man sentenced for killing roommate, burning body
VIRGINIA, Minn. (AP) — A Hibbing man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing his former roommate and burning the man's body in an Iron Range mine pit.
Nineteen-year-old Dylan Gilbertson pleaded guilty last month to intentional second-degree murder in the May death of 20-year-old Jaysen Greenwood. St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin says Gilbertson was sentenced Wednesday.
Hibbing struggles with how it should honor Bob Dylan
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — The city of Hibbing has long struggled with how it should honor its most famous son, Bob Dylan. There is a street sign, a small exhibit in the public library, but little more.

Mineworkers uncertain of future after layoffs
HIBBING, Minn. (AP) — Longtime mineworkers are trying to reshape their future after long and frequent layoffs in Minnesota's Iron Range.
Two hundred workers at Keetac and another 400 in the area are still out of work due to closures at smaller iron ore facilities, Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/2fJEWga) reported. The closures are part of a wave of shutdowns that hit the Iron Range during a downturn in the international steel industry.

HIBBING — A recently-released biography tells the tale of overcoming adversity and heartache to ultimately becoming the most popular boxer in Minnesota history.
Author Paul Levy’s book “The Fighting Frenchman” is about boxer Scott LeDoux, who was born in Crosby-Ironton, Minn.
MOUND, Minn. — Even though the Hibbing/Chisholm boys hockey team had just 16 hours to recuperate from Friday night’s season-opening win over Little Falls before lacing the skates up again for a 1 p.m. game Saturday afternoon, there were to be no excuses for the lack of time between games.
HIBBING — The Hibbing School Board received an update on the Hibbing High School (HHS) auditorium restoration project during a working session Wednesday.
The project, which is estimated to take up to two years, is nearing a start date.

HIBBING — During the 2016 season, Hibbing High School girls swimming coach Mike Veneziano knew he had a special team, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it as to exactly why.
Suffice it to say, the Bluejackets were special because they came together as a team, and more importantly, they had talent.
That talent will be on display today when six members of the squad take part in the State Class A Swimming Preliminary Meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis.
