WASHINGTON (AP) — Starting shortstop Trea Turner has been put on the 10-day injured list by the Washington Nationals with a broken right index finger.
BALTIMORE (AP) — The season is barely two months old, and the Washington Nationals have already been asked to adjust to a new manager, overcome a rash of injuries and jump into bounce-back mode following a poor start.
With Bryce Harper leading the way, they've handled every obstacle while becoming the hottest team in the big leagues.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Howie Kendrick was transferred to the 60-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals, who recalled left-hander Tim Collins from Triple-A Syracuse.
The 34-year-old Kendrick tore his left Achilles tendon during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. A second baseman who also was used in the outfield, Kendrick hit .303 with four homers and 12 RBIs in 40 games.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Veteran Washington Nationals infielder-outfielder Howie Kendrick tore his right Achilles tendon in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers and will miss the rest of the season.
Kendrick confirmed the injury while standing on crutches and wearing a walking boot in the Nationals' clubhouse after Washington was swept in the doubleheader. He will have surgery as early as Monday.
Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper wore a grey Vegas hockey T-shirt late Friday, an ode to his hometown team in the NHL.
But the luck of Vegas or its playoff hockey team is not rubbing off on Harper or his teammates.
The Nationals lost a one-run game for the seventh time this season, falling 5-4 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night. Washington is now 1-7 in one-run games and began the day five games back of the first-place New York Mets in the NL East.
Dusty Baker was always quotable during his time managing the Washington Nationals, always had something interesting to say.
One quote, though, in particular, has stuck with me since his team lost in five games to the Chicago Cubs in the 2017 National League Division Series and, subsequently, Baker, a three-time NL Manager of the Year, being let go as skipper after his contract was not renewed.
Second baseman Howie Kendrick misplayed a popup for an error in the first inning that led to a run.
Right fielder Bryce Harper had trouble picking up the ball in the corner that helped lead to another run in the second. And third baseman Anthony Rendon just missed a hard shot base hit that didn't lead to any runs but made pitcher Gio Gonzalez labor through the fifth inning.
Washington lefty starter Gio Gonzalez, after striking out Trevor Story, took a stroll behind the mound in the top of the first inning Thursday night at Nationals Park.
The veteran pitcher wasn't just psyched after fanning the Rockies shortstop.
Instead, Gonzalez knew the next Colorado hitter was Ian Desmond, the former Washington shortstop who was with the Nationals from 2009 to 2015.
"I wanted him to enjoy it," Gonzalez said of his former teammate. "He's just a great guy."
Nationals likely to leave Murphy behind in Florida
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — All-Star second baseman Daniel Murphy is likely to remain behind in Florida when the Washington Nationals break camp.
Murphy had micro-fracture surgery on his right knee on Oct. 20 and has not appeared in any major league or minor league spring training games. His rehabilitation has taken longer than expected, and Howie Kendrick or Wilmer Difo are expected to start at second in next Thursday's opener at Cincinnati.
WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. | Howie Kendrick was playing for the Philadelphia Phillies last summer when a member of the front office told him he would be dealt before the late July trade deadline.
The Phillies came through on that promise. Kendrick, the well-traveled veteran, was dealt to the Washington Nationals on July 28.
"Being able to come here last year meant a lot. We were winning, but not as much" with the Phillies, said Kendrick, 34.
Kendrick, Nationals finalize $7 million, 2-year contract
WASHINGTON (AP) — Outfielder Howie Kendrick and the Washington Nationals have finalized their $7 million, two-year contract.
The 34-year old will make $3 million this year and $4 million in 2019, and he can earn up to $1.1 million each season in in performance bonuses based on plate appearances.
Howie Kendrick and Nationals agree to $7M, 2-year contract
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Nationals have agreed to a $7 million, two-year contract with outfielder Howie Kendrick, a deal subject to a successful physical.
Agent Pat Murphy confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on Monday. USA Today was first to report the deal.
Kendrick, 34, hit .293 with seven home runs and RBIs in 52 games with Washington after he was acquired from Philadelphia. The versatile right-handed hitter got just three plate appearances off the bench in the playoffs.
