DNCE, Hunter Hayes among highlights of Houston’s Freedom Over Texas July 4 event
Country, pop and a bit of ThunderSOUL collide for this year's Freedom Over Texas festivities.
The city's annual Fourth of July celebration will feature plenty of fireworks, of course. And much of the sparkle comes from the musical headliners: country singer Hunter Hayes and dance-pop outfit DNCE, led by Joe Jonas.
The lineup also includes long-running local band Mango Punch! and the ThunderSOUL Orchestra, which features original members of the legendary Kashmere High School stage band.

The season came to an end for local boys track and field athletes at the IHSAA Regional in Bloomington on Thursday. None of the local athletes in attendance finished in the top three to advance to the state finals next week. Madison's Gabe Stoll was the closest, placing fourth in the long jump at 20 feet, 7.25 inches, less than 3 inches from advancing. Southwestern's Bradley Winston was 11th in the 1600-meter run in 4:44.09. Switzerland County's Joseph Hemingway, Brody Splain, Hunter Hayes and Keegan Morris were 12th in the 400-meter relay in 45.51 and Justin Green was 15th in the discus at 116-feet-even. Madison's Cain Nutley was 19th in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches. Bloomington North (87) won the regional by three points over Bloomington South. Madison tied for 25th with five.
Switzerland County boys golf closed the week with a win on senior night Thursday after shooting its lowest score of the season in a third place finish on Monday. Thursday's win was a formality since South Ripley and Shawe both failed to field full teams and that was a good thing since the Pacers shot a 191. Switzerland County boys golf picked up two wins in three matches last week. The Pacers were uncontested in their first two matches of the week as neither Shawe nor South Ripley fielded complete teams. In a three-way meet on Monday, Switzerland County shot a 217 against the two at Belterra Golf Club and came back with a 200 against the Hilltoppers on Tuesday at Sunrise Golf Course in Madison. Switzerland County got a career-high 25 points from Justin Green and rallied to beat Scottsburg 66-58 in boys basketball Thursday on the road. The Pacers got off to a quick start, getting two dunks from Hunter Hayes to lead 27-22 after the first quarter and Switzerland still led 42-40 at halftime. The pace slowed considerably in the third with Scottsburg taking a 53-52 lead into the final frame. Switzerland took over from there, outscoring the Warriors 14-5 in the fourth to close out the win.
