Old school gym to become community center in Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The city of Huntsville plans to spend more than $5 million to transform an old high school gymnasium into a community center.
Construction on the Johnson Legacy Complex is set to begin next month. It will be located at the site of the old Johnson High School in Huntsville.
The new project will include volleyball courts, a rock-climbing wall, exercise facilities and community meeting rooms. The remainder of the school will be demolished later.
Sentencing set for man convicted in slayings of wife, son

Madison County Circuit Judge Donna Pate can sentence 39-year-old Stephen Marc Stone to either death by lethal injection or life without parole.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A jury has recommended a life-sentence for an Alabama man who killed his wife and 7-year-old son in 2013.
News outlets report a Madison County jury recommended the sentence Wednesday for 39-year-old Stephen Marc Stone. He was found guilty Tuesday of strangling 32-year-old Krista Stone and Zachary Stone.
The only sentencing options for a capital murder conviction are execution or life in prison without the possibility of parole. The jury voted 9-3 for prison.
Delaney helps Sam Houston State win 11th straight
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Cameron Delaney scored 16 points, Kai Mitchell and RJ Smith added 14 each and Sam Houston State pushed its win streak to 11 games with a 77-62 defeat of McNeese Wednesday night.
McNeese came as close as five points early in the second half and James Harvey cut the SHSU lead to 65-56 with a pair of free throws, but Mitchell hit a jump shot with 6:13 remaining and the Bearkats led by double digits the rest of the way.

News outlets report 39-year-old Stephen Marc Stone was found guilty Tuesday of strangling 32-year-old Krista Stone and Zachary Stone. Prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty in the trial's sentencing phase that begins Wednesday.
Authorities said Stone drove their two daughters to his parent's home and called police to report the killings.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office tells news outlets 62-year-old Larry Lee Jones was jailed on a murder charge in the shooting of 28-year-old Eric Arredondo. Deputies say Jones was at his home Saturday night when he shot Arredondo.
Lt. Donny Shaw says first responders found Arredondo on the front porch suffering from a gunshot. Shaw says they tried to save him, but he died at the scene.
Jones to hold town hall in Huntsville

Police: 2 killed in shooting at IHOP in Alabama
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A customer at an IHOP in Alabama started shooting at employees after becoming angry over a carryout order, wounding a restaurant worker who fired back in self-defense and killed him, police said.
The fatal shooting happened in Huntsville on Wednesday evening.
Killed were IHOP employee Roy Brown, Sr., 56, and customer Roderick Turner, 25, the Huntsville Police Department said.

Charges voided against man who brought gun to park protest
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama city has dismissed charges against a former high school teacher accused of brandishing a handgun at an immigration rally.
Shane Ryan Sealy had been accused of reckless endangerment and menacing at a "Keep Families Together" rally June 30 in Huntsville's Big Spring Park. Prosecutors said Sealy marched around the park holding a sign referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They said he pulled a gun after a confrontation with a protester.
