JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — The mayor of Joliet, Illinois, says because the Interstate 80 bridge over the Des Plaines River is structurally unsound, he may be forced to take action.
Joliet Mayor Bob O'Dekirk on Thursday said he would take safety measures if state and federal officials fail to improve the bridge's "serious structural weaknesses."
The Illinois Department of Transportation inspected the bridge in April 2018 and found it to be structurally deficient.

Report: Black motorists stopped, searched more than others
CHICAGO (AP) — A report by the American Civil Liberties Union says African-American motorists in Illinois are more likely than others to be stopped and searched for routine traffic violations.
The report says police asked to conduct searches of vehicles driven by black motorists nearly twice as often as those driven by whites in 2017. Police asked to search cars driven by Latinos 1.4 times more often those driven by whites.

I-290 bridge work means lane closures starting Friday
CHICAGO (AP) — State officials say there will be lane closures this week on Interstate 290 between Illinois 72 and Interstate 90.
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday the lane closures are necessary to make bridge repairs on southbound I-290. The road is also Illinois 53 in that location.
Former Illinois workers sue to get jobs back
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Eight former Illinois workers are suing Gov. Bruce Rauner's administration, alleging they lost their jobs for political reasons.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Illinois Appellate Court has ruled against environmental groups that were seeking to stop a proposed 47-mile highway between Illinois and Indiana.
The Environmental Law and Policy Center initially filed the lawsuit in 2014 against the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and the Metropolitan Planning Organization. The center filed the suit on behalf of the Sierra Club and Openlands.

With the assignment of the interchange number, this means there are four interchanges within 10 miles of each other. There is interchange 315 along Illinois Route 50 at Armour Road in Bourbonnais; interchange 312 at Illinois Route 17 (East Court Street) in east Kankakee; and interchange 308 at U.S. 45/52 in south Kankakee.
IDOT rewards innovative ideas from staff that improve safety, save taxpayer money
A $20 light installed on a salt truck could save taxpayers big in costly damaged truck and bridge repairs, and that’s one reason the idea won the top prize at a first-ever innovation contest for the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Of 100 submissions from IDOT frontline staff, 10 were highlighted at the department’s headquarters Monday in Springfield.
IDOT Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said after touring the various districts over three years, it was beyond time for such a contest.
In one last nail in the Prairie Parkway’s coffin, the state has ordered that a corridor route for the expressway be rescinded.
In what Illinois Department of Transportation officials call a formality, they recently released restrictions on land included in the recorded corridor of the expressway project originally proposed by disgraced former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert in the 1990s.

BRADLEY — The long-awaited upgrade of the Interstate 57 overpass at North Street begins Monday.

During construction, North Street will be closed between Pierce Avenue and Cardinal Drive as the existing two-lane overpass is removed to make way for a four-lane overpass.
Worker patching potholes hit, critically injured by vehicle
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Department of Transportation says a worker was struck and critically injured while filling potholes along a central Illinois roadway.
IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell says the man was stuck Monday by a motorist in Jacksonville as he and other department workers were filling potholes along a road near Interstate 72.
The man remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday.
Count us among area residents sorely disappointed to learn the Illinois Department of Transportation has rejected a Bourbonnais Village request to install a stoplight to ease traffic flow expected from an expanding Blain's Farm & Fleet store on Illinois Route 50.
FULTON – As previously reported, the Illinois Department of Transportation is closing state Route 84, just south of U.S. Route 30, to all through traffic Tuesday through Friday, so Union Pacific Railroad can perform maintenance at its East Clinton railroad crossing.
IDOT is changing the detour routes, though.
Northbound traffic will use Garden Plain Road and Route 30.

CHICAGO (AP) — State officials say there's a newly-redesigned website for travelers that offers the most up-to-date information on road conditions.
The Illinois Department of Transportation says it's called GettingAroundIllinois.com and it's also available on mobile devices.
Randy Blankenhorn is the department's secretary and says it's a good resource to use all year, but especially during winter months when road conditions can change quickly.
Police stepping up DUI, seat belt patrols over holidays
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Police and sheriff's departments across Illinois are stepping up patrols to try to reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes this holiday season.

Illinois asks for public feedback in transportation survey
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois transportation officials are asking for the public's input in its annual traveler opinion survey.
The Illinois Department of Transportation survey is available through Dec. 31. It's conducted through the University of Illinois Springfield's Survey Research Office. Respondents are asked about topics like road conditions, ice and snow removal, commuting habits and driving behaviors.
BRADLEY — A nearly 1-mile section of a walking/biking path along Illinois Route 50 slated for east Bradley will be submitted for funding through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The plan was presented to the Bradley Village Board on Monday. The funding needed for the 10-foot-wide asphalt path along Route 50 would be about $1.1 million, noted engineer Joel Greer, of Gingerich Gereaux & Associates in Bradley.
It's going take a little longer to get the Amtrak trains in Illinois to go a little faster. But one rail expert says people shouldn't get too excited for when high speed rail does, eventually, launch in Illinois.
It's now going to be sometime in 2018 before Illinois said Amtrak will be ready to unleash high speed rail along the corridor between Chicago and St. Louis.
The Illinois Department of Transportation last week said a delay is pushing back the launch date until after the first of the year.
Illinois authorities step up patrols during holiday travel
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in Illinois are increasing seatbelt checkpoints and patrols during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
Officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police say the ramped up enforcement efforts involving more than 150 law enforcement agencies will end early Monday. Authorities say there'll be a high concentration of patrols between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. when seat-belt usage typically declines.
IDOT administrator cited for illegal hiring of neighbor
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Executive Inspector General has found that an Illinois Department of Transportation administrator violated conflict-of-interest and merit-hiring rules when her next-door neighbor was hired as fleet management assistant in 2014.
Wednesday's report also found that Laura Campbell made false statements that she informed her supervisor that she knew applicant Paul Lee.
$80M Mississippi River bridge opens from Illinois to Iowa
SAVANNA, Ill. (AP) — Illinois and Iowa officials are celebrating the opening of a new Mississippi River bridge from Savanna, Illinois, to Sabula, Iowa.
The $80 million span opened to traffic Friday evening. It provides river passage for U.S. 52 and Illinois 64.
Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn says the modern span provides greater safety and better recreational and economic opportunities.
Off the rails: Rochelle plant out of deal to build double-decker rail cars
ROCHELLE – Nippon Sharyo's albatross in the form of a contract to manufacture double-decker rail cars for Illinois and California is no more.
California-based companies Sumitomo Corp. of Americas and Siemens will be taking on the job of making 137 rail cars, 88 of which will go to the Illinois Department of Transportation, and they'll be single-level cars this time around.
Illinois gets thousands of responses to rest area survey
CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois has received nearly 4,500 responses to its public survey asking about highway rest areas in less than two weeks.
The Illinois Department of Transportation launched the public survey to get feedback because the agency is considering how to rehab or possibly close some of those rest areas, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police add patrols on Illinois roads for Halloween weekend
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Police across Illinois are stepping up patrols this weekend in an effort to keep roadways safe as people celebrate Halloween.
Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation and local agencies say added enforcement will be in place starting Friday and through Wednesday morning. They're focusing on impaired and distracted drivers, speeding and people who aren't wearing seat belts.
