Karlovic advances at Maharashtra Open
PUNE, India (AP) — Ivo Karlovic beat an opponent more than two decades younger than him on Tuesday with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round of the Maharashtra Open.
The 39-year-old Croat served 13 aces against his 18-year-old Canadian opponent. His next opponent is Evgeny Donskoy of Russia.
Murray reaches 2nd round of Shenzhen Open as Zhang retires
SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday when Chinese wild-card entry Zhang Zhizhen had to retire in the third set.
Zhang took advantage of Murray's inconsistent serve to win the second set but started limping in the third and retired when trailing 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-2.
Murray faced 10 break points in the match, saving eight of them. It was his first match since losing in the second round of the U.S. Open last month.
Wawrinka still struggling following knee surgery
ROME (AP) — Stan Wawrinka is still struggling to regain his form following surgery on his left knee.
Playing his first match since February, the three-time Grand Slam champion lost to 55th-ranked Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 Sunday in the first round of the Italian Open.
Wawrinka committed 30 unforced errors to his American opponent's 17, was broken once in each set and failed to take advantage of his only two break opportunities.
Lucas Pouille to face Karen Khachanov in Open 13 final
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Third-seeded Lucas Pouille remains on course for his second ATP title of the season after beating qualifier Ilya Ivashka 6-3, 7-6 (6) to reach the Open 13 final on Saturday.
The 16th-ranked Pouille won the Open Sud de France two weeks ago and is gunning for his sixth career title.
He will face Karen Khachanov of Russia, who beat fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych 6-3, 6-2.
3rd-seeded Pouille & 4th-seeded Berdych reach Open 13 semis
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Third-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille and fourth-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych advanced to the Open 13 semifinals on Friday.
Pouille beat eighth-seeded Filip Krajinovic of Serbia 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4, hitting 20 aces and securing victory on his first match point when he broke Krajinovic's serve for the first time.
Berdych led 7-6 (4) when seventh-seeded Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia-Herzegovina pulled out feeling sickly.
Open 13: Wawrinka hobbles out of 2nd round as knee flares up
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Second-seeded Stan Wawrinka hobbled out of the Open 13 second round with a recurrence of his left knee problem, retiring when trailing 6-4, 1-1 against Ilya Ivashka on Thursday.
After abandoning against the 193rd-ranked Belarusian, the three-time Grand Slam champion — who looked upset when leaving the court — said he struggled with his troublesome left knee from 3-3 in the first set onward.
Krajinovic, Khachanov reach 2nd round of Open 13
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Eighth-seeded Serb Filip Krajinovic and ninth-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov advanced to the second round of the Open 13 on Tuesday.
Krajinovic rallied to beat Joao Sousa of Portugal 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 — with both players hitting six aces and dropping serve three times— while Khachanov had 15 aces in a 6-3, 7-6 (2) win against Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.
Haase beats Kavcic in 1st round of Maharashtra Open
PUNE, India (AP) — Fifth-seeded Robin Haase started the new year with a 7-6 (6), 7-5 victory over Blaz Kavcic in the first round of the Maharashtra Open on Tuesday.
Kavcic broke the serve of 42nd-ranked Haase three times, but the Dutchman eventually came through to line up a match against Chile's Nicolas Jarry.
Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro was on court for 2 hours, 40 minutes before beating Ruben Bemelmans 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (8).
