Michigan’s Upper Peninsula hit with season’s 1st big snow
MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) — Parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula have received more than a foot of snow in the first major snowfall of the season.
The National Weather Service measured nearly 10 inches of snowfall Saturday morning in Marquette since Friday morning. The weather service received reports of 17 inches of snow at Ironwood, with nearly 12 inches at the community of Munising.
Camera captures images of cougar in western Upper Peninsula
IRONWOOD, Mich. (AP) — State wildlife officials say a cougar has been spotted in Michigan's far western Upper Peninsula.
The animal was photographed about 9 miles north of Ironwood by a game camera set up by the Department of Natural Resources to record deer movement.
The camera captured three daylight images of the mountain lion. It wore no tracking collar. Biologists couldn't tell whether it was a male or female.

The Ironwood Public Safety Department has identified the dead as 57-year-old Mark Arnold Verrete, 51-year-old Patrick James Somerville and 27-year-old Levi Dean Watkins. They all were residents of Ironwood.

Lightning struck the Daily Globe in Ironwood on Monday night, damaging the press and halting publication of the Tuesday edition. Subscribers instead were getting it on Wednesday, along with that day's paper.

IRONWOOD, Mich. — The Hibbing Community College women’s basketball team received some much-needed competition against a tough Division I school Saturday in a tournament in Gogebic, Mich.
Facing Bismarck State in the Lindquist Classic, the Cardinals fought hard but came out on the short end of a 95-45 loss.
“This was a great chance to compete against a Division I team,” said HCC coach Kate Brau.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says Thursday that work at the Oman Creek boating site in Gogebic County will start Oct. 3, weather permitting. The site is located northwest of Ironwood and adjacent to Little Girl's Point County Park.
FRASER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A 4-mile-long stretch of recreational trail that was built along an abandoned rail line in Bay County has been completed.
The Michigan Department of Transportation and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources say the trail in Fraser Township is owned by the DNR and is part of the Iron Belle Trail, a route that's being developed between Detroit's Belle Isle and Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula.
