Season that started so promising for Huskers takes bad turn
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — This breakout season for Nebraska has broken down.
The Cornhuskers sat 11-2 on New Year's Day, were in the national polls for the first time since 2014 and on pace to have their highest scoring team since the mid-1990s. They were playing like the team that was picked fourth in the Big Ten, and their nonconference resume prompted some early NCAA Tournament forecasters to pencil them in as high as a No. 3 seed.
No. 24 Wisconsin wins its 4th straight, 62-51 over Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Wisconsin star Ethan Happ had trouble getting going on the offensive end in the second half.
Brad Davison was happy to help.
The sophomore guard scored 10 of his 13 points after halftime to fuel No. 24 Wisconsin's decisive surge in a 62-51 win over Nebraska on Tuesday night.
Huskers’ Isaac Copeland out for season after tearing his ACL
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska forward Isaac Copeland is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee early in the second half against Ohio State.
Copeland landed awkwardly after colliding with an Ohio State player under the Nebraska basket early in the second half of the Cornhuskers' 70-60 loss Saturday. The injury was revealed in a MRI done after the game.
Huskers lead wire to wire in 66-51 upset at No. 25 Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Nebraska found itself in the zone Monday night.
The No. 25 Indiana Hoosiers looked completely befuddled.
As Glynn Watson Jr. scored 15 points, Isaac Copeland added 14 and James Palmer flirted with a triple double, it was a smothering defense that helped Nebraska pull away for a 66-51 upset — its second straight victory on the Hoosiers' home court.
Palmer, Watson lead Huskers past DII SW Minnesota St. 79-38
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska finished a three-games-in-three-weeks lull with an easy win over Division II Southwest Minnesota and now get set to resume Big Ten play with three of four games on the road.
Palmer scores 29 to help Nebraska beat Oklahoma State 79-56
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Nebraska got 29 points from James Palmer Jr. and the Huskers pulled away in the second half to defeat Oklahoma State 79-56 on Sunday night at the Sanford Pentagon.

Palmer scores 23, Nebraska beats Illinois in Big Ten opener
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — James Palmer Jr. only made four field goals Sunday, but the Nebraska guard hit 12 of his 14 free throws to lead the Huskers to a 75-60 win over Illinois.
That's exactly what Fighting Illini coach Brad Underwood didn't want to see in the Big Ten conference opener for both teams.
Palmer’s 20 lead Nebraska to 68-66 win at Clemson
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Isaac Copeland Jr. wasn't about to let this resume-builder slip away for Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers had watched Clemson cut an eight-point lead down to 66-64 in the final seconds and made sure his teammates knew it was time toughen up. "We're winning this game. We're winning this game," Copeland, a senior, shouted in the huddle.
"Chill out, bro, chill out," James Palmer told his teammate, according to Nebraska coach Tim Miles.
Last season: 22-11, lost in first round of NIT.
Coach: Tim Miles.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: Guard Evan Taylor, center Jordy Tshimanga, guard Anton Gill, center Duby Okeke.
Coach Tim Miles will be back for a seventh season at Nebraska and talks about a contract extension will begin after the NCAA Final Four, athletic director Bill Moos said yesterday. Miles is 97-97 with one NCAA Tournament appearance in six years. Moos, hired away from Washington State in October, said he liked what he saw this season as the Cornhuskers went 22-11 and finished tied with Final Four-bound Michigan for fourth place in the Big Ten. A pair of Nebraska standout juniors are testing the NBA Draft waters but could still return for their senior seasons.
The school announced Tuesday afternoon that James Palmer and Isaac Copeland are each declaring for the draft but are not planning to hire agents. As long as they don't, they retain the option of withdrawing from the draft before May 30 and returning to school.

LINCOLN — Those who claim Nebraska doesn’t have many quality wins entering this week’s Big Ten men’s basketball tournament likely have forgotten one of the season’s biggest victories.
It happened on Sept. 12, and that’s not a typo.
Two months before the season, the NCAA approved NU’s appeal for Georgetown transfer Isaac Copeland to become immediately eligible for 2017-18, allowing the Huskers’ first five-star recruit to play in all games instead of sitting out 11 first-semester contests.
LINCOLN — Nebraska junior guard James Palmer is the school’s fifth first-team all-conference basketball selection in 20 years, and the 44th overall.
The 6-foot-6 Miami transfer earned first-team All-Big Ten from the league’s coaches and second-team from the media Monday.
Isaac Copeland, a 6-9 junior forward who transferred from Georgetown, was voted honorable mention by coaches and media. Senior guard Evan Taylor was NU’s nominee for the Big Ten sportsmanship award.
Isaac Copeland had 17 points, twelve rebounds, and four assists and Nebraska opened a 21-point lead midway through the second half, then held off Penn State for a 76-64 win yesterday.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Falling behind in Big Ten road basketball games isn’t new for Nebraska, and it hasn’t stopped the Huskers from success.
They trailed Northwestern by five points at half and won by 15. They trailed Penn State by 16 and forced overtime. They also turned small deficits against Rutgers and Wisconsin into victories.
In Sunday’s 72-66 loss at Illinois, NU flipped an 11-point deficit into a five-point lead, but couldn’t hang on.
Leron Black scored a career-high 28 points and snagged seven rebounds, to help Illinois outlast Nebraska for a 72-66 victory yesterday.
Roby’s big night leads Nebraska past Minnesota 91-85
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — After eight days off, a quick 7-0 deficit was all it took for Nebraska to wake up. From there, the Huskers played the kind of basketball that has made them a surprise team in the Big Ten.
Sophomore Isaiah Roby led a balanced attack with a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds as Nebraska defeated Minnesota 91-85 on Tuesday night.
Roby’s big night leads Nebraska past Minnesota 91-85
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sophomore Isaiah Roby led a balanced attack with a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds as Nebraska defeated Minnesota 91-85 on Tuesday night.
James Palmer Jr. had 19 points and nine assists for the Huskers (18-8, 9-4 Big Ten), who won for the sixth time in seven games. Anton Gill scored 12 points, while Glynn Watson Jr. and Isaac Copeland each scored 10 for Nebraska.
Mired in an eight-game losing streak, the Detroit Pistons reportedly have acquired forward Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers. A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that the Clippers would also give up Brice Johnson and center Willie Reed while receiving forward Tobias Harris, guard Avery Bradley, center Boban Marjanovic and draft picks. Griffin is averaging 22.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 33 games this season.
James Palmer Jr. scored 28 points, had eight rebounds, and recorded two steals to key a second-half comeback, as Nebraska rallied for a 74-63 victory over Wisconsin last night.
LINCOLN — Iowa center Tyler Cook scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Saturday night. But the damage might have been worse for Nebraska if center Jordy Tshimanga hadn’t played his best game of the season.
The 6-foot-11, 268-pound sophomore had 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting and added eight rebounds and an assist in 19 minutes to help the Huskers defeat the Hawkeyes 98-84.
Palmer scores 28, Huskers pull away from Iowa for 98-84 win
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — James Palmer Jr. scored 28 points, Isaac Copeland added 23 points and 11 rebounds and Nebraska pulled away from Iowa in the second half for a 98-84 win Saturday night.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — The past three years in Big Ten men’s basketball, Nebraska won five, six and six games out of 18.
On Wednesday night, the Huskers claimed their sixth league victory of this season with eight games to go by toppling Rutgers 60-54.
Forward Isaac Copeland led all scorers with 23 points, and guard James Palmer — who had 34 in a loss at No. 13 Ohio State on Monday — added 18. But NU’s most valuable player down the stretch was point guard Glynn Watson.
Isaac Copeland scored 23 points, had seven rebounds, and two blocked shots to lead Nebraska to 60-54 victory over Rutgers last night in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Copeland scores 23 to lead Nebraska over Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — For all the scoring that Isaac Copeland did against Rutgers, it was one of the little things that gave Nebraska a much-needed road win.
Copeland scored 23 points and came up with a clutch rebound in the final minute to lead Nebraska to 60-54 victory Wednesday night.
Falling into first-half holes has become a troubling trend for Michigan in recent weeks.
This time, though, the No. 23 Wolverines finally dug one that they couldn't climb out of.
A sloppy start coupled with a lifeless effort at both ends of the floor led to a lopsided 72-52 loss to Nebraska Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Charles Matthews scored 15 with 6-for-10 shooting but received little help for Michigan (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten), which was playing its third game in six days.
Huskers beat Illini 64-63 on Palmer’s last-second 3-pointer
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — James Palmer Jr. played it cool after hitting the winning 3-pointer just before the buzzer to give Nebraska a 64-63 win over Illinois on Monday night.
Asked if he had ever done that before, he said, "Of course. You play basketball, you're going to hit a couple game-winners."
But even Palmer had to admit this one was special under the circumstances. The Cornhuskers were coming off a loss at Penn State on Friday and were on the verge of losing for the third time in four games.
It takes a certain level of swagger to fire the shot Anton Gill did with about eight minutes left against Northwestern.
And it takes a certain level of swagger to end a game the way Nebraska did Tuesday night.
The Huskers showed a confidence that has been in short supply around their program in recent seasons in closing out Northwestern 70-55 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, ending the game on a 27-13 run over the final eight minutes to improve to 11-5 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play.
Watson scores 19, Nebraska beats Northwestern 70-55
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Glynn Watson Jr. knew he needed to step up after two quiet games and give Nebraska a lift.
This will do.
Watson scored 19 points and Nebraska took control down the stretch to beat Northwestern 70-55 on Tuesday night.
"It's just on me," Watson said. "I've got to get focused."
Held to a total of three points over the previous two games against UT San Antonio and Delaware State, he sure was locked in for this one. Watson also had six rebounds and six assists.
Cornhuskers use late run to put away Boston College 71-62
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Well, at least Nebraska did its part for the Big Ten in what has otherwise been a miserable Big Ten/ACC Challenge for the conference.
James Palmer Jr. and Isaac Copeland scored 15 points apiece, and the Cornhuskers broke open the game late in a 71-62 win over Boston College on Wednesday night.
The win was only the Big Ten's second in 13 games in the annual battle between the leagues. Purdue beat Louisville for the other one.
Glynn Watson Jr. scored 26 points, nabbed six steals, and had five assists and Nebraska hung on after nearly blowing a 22-point lead to beat Long Beach State 85-80 yesterday in the fifth-place game at the Advocare Invitational in Orlando, Florida.

Glynn Watson Jr. scored 26 points and Nebraska hung on after nearly blowing a 22-point lead to beat Long Beach State 85-80 Sunday in the fifth-place game at the Advocare Invitational.
"He's a disruptive force," Long Beach head coach Dan Monson said of Watson. "It's almost like Richard Sherman on defense. You don't want to challenge him."
LINCOLN — Nine months ago, Isaac Copeland underwent major back surgery.
Eleven months ago, Anton Gill went under the knife for a serious knee injury.
On Sunday, Nebraska’s touted transfers from Georgetown and Louisville offered proof of why the staff was so eager to get them into red and white uniforms.
Isaac Copeland scored 19 of his 30 points in the first half and Nebraska opened up an early double-digit lead and defeated North Dakota 92-70 yesterday.
