T.J. Warren scores 27 points, Suns beat Spurs 116-96
PHOENIX (AP) — Nights when star Devin Booker is off his game don't often spell victories for the struggling Phoenix Suns. But Booker was still a factor Wednesday night, and his teammates picked him up.
T.J. Warren scored 16 of his 27 points in the first half and the Suns built a big lead, almost lost it and then pulled away for a 116-96 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
The Suns ended a four-game losing streak to improve to 3-11.
Point guard biggest question as Suns open camp
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have made a host of roster moves for what they expect to be a vastly improved season ahead.
"I feel like we checked most of the boxes on our to-do list this summer," general manager Ryan McDonough said at the team's media day Monday. "We have more shooting. We have potentially a better defensive team. And we have a lot of veteran guys to teach our young guys how to win and help them win."
But one glaring question remains. Just who is the point guard?
Suns re-sign point guard Isaiah Canaan
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have re-signed point guard Isaiah Canaan.
Canaan, entering his sixth NBA season, signed with Phoenix last Dec. 13 and appeared in 19 games before breaking his left ankle Jan. 31 against Dallas, requiring season-ending surgery.
Suns acquire point guard Elfrid Payton from Magic
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns acquired point guard Elfrid Payton from the Orlando Magic on Thursday for a second-round pick this summer.
Payton is averaging a career-high 13.0 points and shooting career bests of 52.0 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from 3-point range this season. He also is averaging 6.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds.
Canaan hurt but Suns stop skid with 102-88 win over Mavs
PHOENIX (AP) — The end of the Phoenix Suns' five-game losing streak came with a sobering sidebar, a gruesome injury to backup point guard Isaiah Canaan.
Rookie forward Josh Jackson matched his career best with 21 points and T.J. Warren added 20 as the Suns handed the Dallas Mavericks their fifth loss in a row, 102-88 on Wednesday night.
But anyone who saw Canaan break his left ankle probably wished they hadn't.
Suns guard Isaiah Canaan breaks ankle in gruesome injury
PHOENIX (AP) — Suns guard Isaiah Canaan broke his left ankle Wednesday night in a gruesome injury against the Dallas Mavericks.
The backup point guard was fouled as he drove to the basket in the final seconds of the first quarter. His ankle gave way on a hard, awkward landing, and his left foot was pointing in the wrong direction as his body tumbled to the floor.
Suns waived point guard Mike James
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns waived point guard Mike James on Friday, two weeks after he became the first two-way player in NBA history to sign a standard contract.
James averaged 10.4 points and 3.8 and 20.9 minutes in 31 games this season, the 27-year-old former Eastern Arizona College player's first in the NBA. He started 10 games, but sat out two of the last four.
Len, Suns complete 97-91 comeback win against Mavericks
DALLAS (AP) — Isaiah Canaan and the Phoenix Suns were confident they could come back to win. After all, they had just done it two days ago.
Alex Len had 14 points and 14 rebounds to help Phoenix rally past the Dallas Mavericks 97-91 on Monday night for its second consecutive victory on the road.
"It's a long game and it's all about getting stops and converting on the other end," Canaan said. "I told them when we get stops, the shots are going to fall in the second half and that's what happened."
Phoenix Suns sign guard Isaiah Canaan
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have signed guard Isaiah Canaan after receiving an injury hardship exemption from the NBA.
Canaan will be available Wednesday night against the Toronto Raptors.
Under the exemption, the Suns added Canaan because they have four players on the roster out for two weeks or more. Star guard Devin Booker is out with a groin injury, and Alan Williams, Davon Reed, and Brandon Knight have serious knee injuries.
CHICAGO (AP) — If the Chicago Bulls are to extend their postseason, they almost certainly will have to do it without Rajon Rondo.
Rondo has a fractured right thumb, and coach Fred Hoiberg says the backcourt catalyst is a "long shot" to play Game 6 against the Boston Celtics on Friday night. Nor does the coach expect Rondo to be available if a Game 7 is necessary. The veteran guard is scheduled to work out Thursday night.
Regrouping Bulls hope Canaan can provide answer at point
CHICAGO (AP) — Rolling along with a humming offense not too long ago, the Chicago Bulls will now try to regroup.
And they'll do it with a seldom-used point guard making a crucial start.
The Bulls will go with Isaiah Canaan in Game 5 of their first-round series against the Celtics in Boston on Wednesday, hoping he can stabilize an offense struggling without the injured Rajon Rondo.
More important, they will try to regain the lead in a series after back-to-back home losses.
Jimmy Butler’s 40 points boost Bulls past Lakers, 118-110
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even when Dwyane Wade takes a night off to rest, Jimmy Butler gets the benefit of his new Chicago Bulls teammate's veteran experience.
Not that Butler needed a whole lot of help while he carved up the Los Angeles Lakers.
Butler scored a season-high 40 points and Isaiah Canaan added a season-high 17 in the Bulls' fifth victory in six games, 118-110 over the Lakers on Sunday night.
