NY police chief credited with saving man’s life after crash
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a New York police chief saved a man's life after he was critically injured in a two-car crash.
State police say 54-year-old Robert P. Gelinas Jr., of Ithaca, was driving on Route 13 in the Tompkins County town of Ithaca around 2:40 p.m. Thursday when he cut in front of another car while making a left turn.
Troopers say Gelinas wasn't wearing a seatbelt and suffered a serious head injury in the collision.

Police: Teen charged in stabbing wanted for murder
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — Police in upstate New York say one of three teenagers accused of stabbing a 24-year-old man was wanted on out-of-state warrants for murder and violating probation in connection with a rape.
The Post-Standard in Syracuse reports the suspects, ages 13, 15 and 16, were arrested and charged with first-degree gang assault and first-degree assault. Police haven't released their names because they're juveniles and authorities didn't specify which suspect was wanted on warrants.
Concord grape growers get state help

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — A 21-year-old former Cornell University student has pleaded guilty to federal weapons charges for having a homemade bomb and cache of illegal weapons.
Maximilien Reynolds pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court Tuesday. He admitted that in November 2017 he gave another student money to buy a MSR-15 Patrol rifle. He also admitted having numerous other weapons.

Agency alleges company allowed constant harassment at plant
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says an upstate New York company turned a blind eye to blatant racism and sexual harassment in the workplace.
The EEOC alleged in its federal lawsuit that a manager at Ithaca's Porous Materials Inc. made abusive comments to female and minority employees, including calling foreign-born employees "terrorists," using racial slurs and making unwanted sexual advances and comments toward female employees.

Nixon heads upstate for campaign events
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Cynthia Nixon is taking her campaign for governor upstate as the Democratic primary nears.
The longtime liberal activist and former "Sex and the City" star will make stops in Rochester, Syracuse, Ithaca, Schenectady and Saratoga Springs on Friday and throughout the long Labor Day weekend.
Her campaign says Nixon will meet with volunteers and voters and make a stop at the state fair in Syracuse.
Women mark enrollment milestone at Cornell Engineering
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — The Cornell University College of Engineering says it now enrolls equal numbers of undergraduate women and men.
The college says it reached the milestone with the arrival of the Class of 2022 amid increased outreach. Cornell Engineering now has 1,556 female undergraduates and 1,567 male undergraduates.
Women actually outnumber men in the incoming class, 412 to 366.
Police: Man killed in fall from hotel roof
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities in upstate New York say a 43-year-old man was killed when he fell off the roof of an Ithaca hotel.
WSTM-TV reports police responded to a call about a man falling from the Hillside Inn Sunday. Police were told the man wasn't conscious or breathing.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say more than 240 bikes have been stolen or have gone missing from a bike-sharing program in Rochester.

NY offers pheasants for hunts involving novices, others
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is offering 2,000 pheasants to groups that sponsor hunts involving young people, women, novices, veterans or people with disabilities.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation annually offers some of the pheasants it raises at its Ithaca game farm for use in so-called sponsored hunts. The aim of the program is to allow qualified groups to offer pheasant hunting in a controlled setting with the help of mentors.

ATLANTA (AP) — Dorothy Cotton, who worked closely with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., taught nonviolence to demonstrators before marches and sometimes calmed tensions by singing church hymns, has died. She was 88.
Cotton died Sunday afternoon at the Kendal at Ithaca retirement community in New York, said Jared Harrison, a close friend who was at her bedside. Harrison said she had battled illnesses recently but didn't specify a cause of death.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — The Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, the Press and Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton and the Ithaca Journal have been named newspapers of distinction by the New York State Associated Press Association.

ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — Cornell University has announced new rules for its fraternities and sororities after reports of hazing.
From now on, hard liquor is prohibited in residential chapter houses and by 2021, all Greek residences will be required to have a live-in adviser.
Cornell also says chapters will face a minimum three-year suspension for hazing involving coerced drinking or drug use, sexual misconduct or other forms of violence or mental abuse.

White student pleads guilty, admits racial slur in fight
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — A white Cornell University student has admitted using a racial slur during an attack on a black student and has pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.
Police initially charged 20-year-old John Greenwood, of Toronto, with assault as a hate crime after a black student said he was attacked by several people who hurled racial epithets outside his residence near the Cornell campus in Ithaca, New York, in September.
Cornell accepts more than 5,200 for class of 2022
ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — Cornell University says it received a record-high number of applications for admissions.
The Ivy League school said more than 51,000 students applied for a place this fall in the Class of 2022. Cornell this past week offered admission to 5,288 applicants and offered another 6,684 students a place on a waitlist.
Admitted students have until May 1 to accept Cornell's offer of admission.
