Doubles win keeps French hopes alive in Davis Cup final
LILLE, France (AP) — Suddenly realizing he was listening to France's national anthem for maybe the last time in his Davis Cup captain role, Yannick Noah could not hold back tears.
Standing next to his players during "La Marseille," Noah was emotional before Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert took on Croatia's Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic in the doubles of the final on Saturday.
Bryan’s return from Davis Cup retirement helps keep US alive
ZADAR, Croatia (AP) — Doubles specialist Mike Bryan's decision to come out of Davis Cup retirement gave the United States a much-needed lift.
Bryan teamed with Ryan Harrison for the first time and helped the Americans outlast Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic 7-5, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5) over nearly five hours to cut Croatia's lead to 2-1 in their semifinal on Saturday.
VARAZDIN, Croatia (AP) — Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic won their second Davis Cup doubles together from an early setback to put Croatia ahead of Kazakhstan 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Dodig and Mektic beat Timur Khabibulin and Aleksandr Nedovyesov 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in three hours on indoor clay.
VARAZDIN, Croatia (AP) — Mikhail Kukushkin beat Borna Coric in 3 1/2 hours for Kazakhstan to tie with Croatia 1-1 in the Davis Cup quarterfinals on Friday.
Despite a much lower ranking, Kukushkin improved his record against Coric to 3-0 after winning 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-2.
Marin Cilic earned Croatia the first point by dispatching Dmitry Popko 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.
Lorenzi, Rublev advance to final at Croatia Open
UMAG, Croatia (AP) — Fourth-seeded Paolo Lorenzi of Italy and lucky loser Andrey Rublev of Russia reached the final of the Croatia Open on Saturday.
In an all-Italian semifinal, Lorenzi knocked out Alessandro Giannessi 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Lorenzi seeks his second ATP title.
After winning the first set, Lorenzi wasted a 4-2 lead in the second. He enjoyed a more commanding lead in the decisive set at 5-2 and waltzed in.
UMAG, Croatia (AP) — Unseeded Marco Cecchinato defeated fifth-seeded Gilles Simon of France 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to open the Croatia Open with an upset result on Monday.
The 105th-ranked Italian broke his 36th-ranked opponent twice in the opening set, and did the same in the decisive third set after the favorite Simon won the second.
Cecchinato will next face local wild card Ivan Dodig, who beat unseeded Marius Copil of Romania 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the only other main-draw match.
Davis Cup: Spain edges Croatia 3-2 to reach quarterfinals
OSIJEK, Croatia (AP) — Pablo Carreno Busta beat Nikola Mektic 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-4 as Spain edged depleted Croatia to reach the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup on Sunday with a 3-2 victory.
Earlier Sunday, Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Croatia's Franko Skugor 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (6) to put Spain level at 2-2 and send the match into the deciding rubber.
Croatia won the doubles on Saturday for a surprise 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.

OSIJEK, Croatia (AP) — Croatia and Spain are 1-1 after the opening singles in their Davis Cup first-round tie.
Croatia's Franko Skugor beat Pablo Carreno Busta 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (2), then Roberto Bautista Agut evened the score by beating Ante Pavic 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.
Croatia, last year's runner-up, is without its three top players, Marin Cilic, Borna Coric, and Ivan Dodig.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Abigail Spears played her part at the Australian Open "30-fun" party by winning the mixed doubles title.
The 35-year-old Spears teamed with Colombia's Juan Sebastian Cabal to beat second-seeded Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig 6-2 6-4 in the final Sunday on Rod Laver Arena.

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Croatia needs one more point to win its second Davis Cup title after winning the doubles against Argentina in straight sets on Saturday.
Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig defeated Juan Martin del Potro and Leonardo Mayer 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), 6-3 for a 2-1 lead over Argentina in the final.

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Leaving behind two injury-hit years, Juan Martin del Potro is looking to cap his successful comeback by leading Argentina to its first Davis Cup title.
The 2009 U.S. Open champion said host Croatia is the favorite in the best-of-five series, but believes Argentina is in a strong position after losing in four Davis Cup finals since 1981.
Cilic beats Gasquet to send Croatia into Davis Cup final
ZADAR, Croatia (AP) — Marin Cilic swatted aside Frenchman Richard Gasquet in straight sets on Sunday to send Croatia into the Davis Cup final for only the second time.
The 2014 U.S. Open champion won 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 to give Croatia an unassailable 3-1 lead with one singles rubber left to play.
Croatia won its only final 11 years ago away to Slovakia and will play either Argentina or Britain in the final.

ZADAR, Croatia (AP) — Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig put Croatia 2-1 ahead in the Davis Cup semifinal against France by upsetting top-ranked doubles pair Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6 (6), 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-3 on Saturday.
Cilic, who won his singles on Friday, replaced Marin Draganja and it proved to be an inspired choice.

Davis Cup: Coric should be fit for Croatia against France
ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Borna Coric should be fit for Croatia's Davis Cup semifinal against France next week after retiring during his first-round match at the U.S. Open because of a knee injury.
Croatia captain Zeljko Krajan was confident Coric would be available in naming him in the team on Tuesday.
