Colts add rookie guard to take spot of retiring Mewhort
WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Rookie guard Nick Callender has signed with the Indianapolis Colts.
The move Thursday comes one day after veteran guard Jack Mewhort abruptly announced his retirement.
Callender originally signed with Seattle after the 6-foot-6, 321-pound offensive lineman was not drafted. He was waived by the Seahawks on June 12.
Jack Mewhort kept trying to play through knee pain.
Eventually, the 26-year-old offensive linemen simply couldn't any more.
After the Indianapolis Colts gave the oft-injured offensive lineman a second chance last spring, Mewhort abruptly announced he was retiring Wednesday.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts guard Jeremy Vujnovich has signed the team's one-year offer.
The 6-foot-5, 300-pound lineman was an exclusive rights free agent after starting all 16 games at left guard in 2017.
It's unclear what his role will be this season after Indy re-signed starting guard Jack Mewhort and added veteran guard/center Matt Slauson in free agency.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts are bringing back offensive lineman Jack Mewhort and cornerback Pierre Desir, continuing their free-agent signing flurry.
Mewhort has started at right guard and right tackle before settling in at left guard. But he has battled injuries since Indianapolis drafted him in the second round in 2014 and finished last season on injured reserve after undergoing knee surgery in mid-October.

Marcus Mariota starts at quarterback for Titans vs. Colts
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota is active and will start Monday night against the Indianapolis Colts after missing one game with a strained left hamstring.
The Titans also kept both Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden active against the Colts.
Andrew Luck already had been declared out for his sixth straight game to open the season. Le'Raven Clark will start at right guard with Jack Mewhort placed on injured reserve with an injury.
Colts center Kelly to undergo foot surgery, out indefinitely
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts center Ryan Kelly will have surgery on his injured foot and will be out indefinitely.
Coach Chuck Pagano made the announcement Thursday, the final day of training camp.
Kelly was injured during a joint practice with the Detroit Lions last week and did not play in Sunday's preseason opener.
Colts hope continuity plays key role on offensive line
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Center Ryan Kelly looks around the Indianapolis Colts' huddle and knows all the names and numbers.
Sure, guards Jack Mewhort and Joe Haeg have switched spots, for now, but everyone else is back in their old, familiar places.
Left tackle Anthony Castonzo is still protecting the quarterback's blind side. Second-year tackle Le'Raven Clark seems to have found a home on the right side of the offensive line. And Kelly continues to call out the signals at center.
Luck expects to play despite sore throwing shoulder, elbow
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Andrew Luck is paying a hefty price for taking so many hits.
After getting knocked around more than a dozen times in last weekend's loss to Houston, the Indianapolis Colts' quarterback missed practice Wednesday with shoulder and elbow injuries to his throwing arm though he expects to play Sunday at Minnesota.
"Absolutely, very confident," Luck said when asked if he'd be available this weekend.
Indianapolis puts Mewhort, Geathers on injured reserve
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts lost two more starters Monday when they put left guard Jack Mewhort and starting safety Clayton Geathers on injured reserve.
Mewhort injured his left knee during Sunday's 22-17 loss to Houston. Geathers was inactive with a neck injury.
Losing Mewhort and Geathers is another big blow for the Colts (6-7), who are on the verge of being eliminated from the playoff chase.
Irsay says Colts’ Mewhort expected to miss 2-4 weeks
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts left guard Jack Mewhort is expected to miss two to four weeks with a knee injury.
That's good news for a team that feared Mewhort sustained a season-ending torn ACL in Saturday night's 33-23 loss to Philadelphia.
Team owner Jim Irsay confirmed the news in a Twitter post Sunday afternoon.
Mewhort started each of the past two seasons and is expected to play a key role in Indy's revamped offensive line.
Jim Irsay spent 11 months trying to keep the Indianapolis Colts' offensive cornerstones in place.
Last summer, the team owner rewarded left tackle Anthony Castonzo and receiver T.Y. Hilton with lucrative contract extensions. Just before the start of free agency, he made an irresistible offer to tight end Dwayne Allen. Then last month, he made Andrew Luck the NFL's highest-paid player.
Now comes hard part — making sure the offensive line holds up.
