PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ryan Lavarnway was an unlikely candidate to get a big hit in a pressure situation for the Pirates.
The 30-year-old fourth-string catcher was playing his 142nd career game, spread out over seven seasons with five teams, and spent most of 2018 with Triple-A Indianapolis.
In his second major league at-bat of the season, Lavarnway drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit single in the 11th inning, giving Pittsburgh a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jacob Stallings has 19 hits in parts of three major league seasons, and the rookie third-string catcher has made a some of them count.
Stallings hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-6 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.
It was Stallings' second career game-ending hit. The catcher also had one on Sept. 23, 2016, against Washington as a pinch hitter.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have put veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli on the seven-day concussion disabled list.
The Pirates made the move Friday night just before the start of their game with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rookie catcher Jacob Stallings was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.
INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 3-3) won 4-0 over Toledo (Tigers). RHP Nick Kingham (1-0, 0.82) got the win, allowing three hits and one run in six innings. He gave up no walks and struck out six. RHP Kyle Crick (2.25) picked up the save. C Jacob Stallings (.500) hit two doubles, and 2B Erich Weiss (.231) legged out a triple.
INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 2-1) lost 13-3 to Toledo (Tigers). CF Christopher Bostick (.500) was 3 for 4 with one run. 2B Kevin Kramer (.294) was 2 for 4 with an RBI. C Jacob Stallings (.500) recorded two RBIs. RHP Austin Coley (0-1, 81.00 ERA) lasted two-thirds of the first inning, allowing six runs on seven hits.
BRADENTON, Fla. — Outfielder Jordan Luplow is gone, but that's only the beginning of the decisions facing Pirates general manager Neal Huntington.
Luplow was one of four players the Pirates said they trimmed from the major league roster Saturday.
Also sent to the minors were Jacob Stallings, the organization's No. 3 catcher behind Francisco Cervelli and Elias Diaz, and pitchers Tyler Jones and Richard Rodriguez. All four are expected to start the season in Indianapolis.

The move was made Wednesday, one day after Cervelli left a 6-5 loss at the Orioles in the ninth inning.
Cervelli, who is batting .252 with three home runs and 20 RBIs in 47 games, took a foul ball off his face mask Tuesday night.
