Texans place non-exclusive franchise tag on Clowney
The Houston Texans placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on defensive end/outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on Monday.
The move doesn't close the door for the Texans to sign the edge...
Eagles again counting on Nick Foles in high-stakes games
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nick Foles understands his Super Bowl MVP trophy isn't going to help when J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney are chasing after him.
No matter the pressure, he usually stays calm and plays with poise.
The Philadelphia Eagles are again counting on Foles to win high-stakes games. Foles, who was 3-0 in the playoffs last season, led the 14-point underdog Eagles to a victory on the road against the Rams last week to keep them in the playoff race.
O’Brien defends late penalty from Clowney in loss to Colts
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien on Monday defended Jadeveon Clowney and his late offside penalty that factored into Houston's 24-21 loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, which ended a nine-game winning streak.
Late penalty helps Colts snap Texans’ 9-game winning streak
HOUSTON (AP) — With two minutes remaining, the Houston Texans down 24-21 to the Indianapolis Colts and needing a critical stop at midfield on third-and-1, Andrew Luck tried and tried to draw the Texans offside.
With the play clock dwindling and the Colts facing having to burn a timeout, Luck gave it one last try.
Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney took the bait.
Mayfield, Cleveland face big test with Houston’s pass rush
HOUSTON (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have done a great job of protecting Baker Mayfield recently, and have the longest active streak in the NFL by not allowing a sack in 125 snaps.
Things will get more difficult for the Browns (4-6-1) on Sunday when they visit the Houston Texans (8-3) and their defense led by pass-rushing stars J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney. Watt is tied for second in the NFL with 11 1/2 sacks and has 19 quarterback hits, and Clowney has seven sacks and 15 quarterback hits.
Texans shake off terrible start with 6-game winning streak
HOUSTON (AP) — Ask Jadeveon Clowney how the Houston Texans turned around their season by winning six straight games after an 0-3 start and the hulking defensive end breaks into song.
"Started from the bottom now we're here," he bellows. "Started from the bottom now the whole team here."
While the 2013 Drake tune is a little old to be the team's anthem, the sentiment of the song couldn't be more fitting for these Texans.
Finally healthy, Clowney dominates for Texans defense
HOUSTON (AP) — Jadeveon Clowney pounced on a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown on Sunday against the Colts.
On the next drive, he shoved a lineman out of his path and tossed Andrew Luck to the ground for a 9-yard loss to force a punt.
This is what the Houston Texans envisioned when they selected the defensive end with the first overall pick in the 2014 draft.
Texans win but still have more work to do
HOUSTON (AP) — After finally getting their first win this weekend, the Houston Texans know that they still have plenty of work to do if they hope to get on a roll and turn their season around.
The Texans (1-3) squandered an 18-point lead on Sunday before beating the Colts 37-34 in overtime to end a nine-game losing streak going back to last season.
Coming up next is a showdown with in-state rival Dallas, a team that enters the game at 2-2 after a victory over Detroit this weekend.
Texans look to clean up mistakes to avoid falling to 0-3
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Texans committed mistake after mistake in their loss to Tennessee.
Now they must figure out a way to fix these problems, so they don't fall into a 0-3 hole when they meet the New York Giants on Sunday.

McVay might hold QB Goff out of Rams’ third preseason game
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley hopes there will be a time when the NFL does away with preseason games entirely, saying that "everyone's dream is not to play in the preseason."
In the meantime, Gurley will have to settle for Rams coach Sean McVay making his dream come true.
Texans’ Watt eager to return, move past injury woes
HOUSTON (AP) — Nearly 11 months from his most recent NFL game, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt isn't hiding his eagerness to get back on the field.
The three-time Defensive Player of the Year hasn't played since he suffered a broken left leg against Kansas City in Week 5 last season. The prior year, he missed the final 13 games of the 2016 season with a back injury that required surgery.
McGlinchey excited for big test this week vs. Watt, Clowney
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Mike McGlinchey's first test as an NFL tackle came against one of the league's top pass rushers in Dallas' DeMarcus Lawrence.
Things will only get tougher this week when McGlinchey must contend with three-time former AP Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney when the 49ers travel to Houston for two days of practice against the Texans before an exhibition game on Saturday.

Is quarterback Blake Bortles holding the Jaguars back from being all they can be?
The Jacksonville Jaguars will take the field for an AFC semifinal Sunday in Pittsburgh as one of the final eight teams still playing in this NFL season, and with a future as bright as their present. Their new regime of coach Doug Marrone and front-office football czar Tom Coughlin has reinvigorated the franchise. The defense is young and terrific, and rookie running back Leonard Fournette certainly appears to be the real deal.
When a moment is frozen in time and shown repeatedly on highlight shows even years later, it is hard to believe the participants, linked forever on video, have moved on.
Trash? Jaguars QB Bortles ‘making guys eat those words’
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles kicked Jadeveon Clowney's "trash" talk to the curb.
Clearly frustrated following a 45-7 loss at Jacksonville on Sunday, Clowney called Bortles trash after the game. Bortles got his first chance to respond Wednesday and handled the latest insult as well as he has opposing defenses in recent weeks.
Clowney denies prisoner costume was message to Texans owner
HOUSTON (AP) — Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney said Wednesday that he was not sending a message to team owner Bob McNair when he dressed up as a prisoner for a Halloween party, though he added that "it was pretty hilarious of me."
Clowney wore the costume days after McNair apologized for saying "we can't have the inmates running the prison" during a meeting of NFL owners about players who protest by kneeling during the national anthem.
Texans say Clowney not taking a shot at fellow Gamecock McNair with Halloween prison outfit
Though the Houston Texans say Jadeveon Clowney was not taking a shot at team owner Robert McNair with an inmate Halloween outfit, it sure looked like it. The former South Carolina Gamecocks star pass rusher appeared at a team party Monday night in Houston in full costume, and TMZ posted a video.
Houston’s Clowney impresses teammates with TD return
HOUSTON (AP) — Jadeveon Clowney's Houston teammates mocked him mercilessly when Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton tackled the defensive end to prevent a score.
Clowney responded last week by scooping up another fumble and rumbling 22 yards for his first career touchdown. That silenced — and impressed — his teammates.

Saturday was more than South Carolina's season-opener. It was also the final day for NFL teams to cut their rosters to the 53-man limit.
The Gamecocks have several alumni in the NFL and may add more once teams finalize their practice squads. Here's how it breaks down now.
Houston Texans sign former South Carolina receiver Bruce Ellington
Former Berkeley High School star Bruce Ellington was signed by the Houston Texans on Friday, the team announced.
It is the second NFL team that Ellington has signed with in the past week.
Originally drafted by San Francisco in the fourth-round in 2014, Ellington was released by the 49ers on Aug. 3. The following day, the New York Jets picked up the former South Carolina standout on waivers, but was released him a day later when he received a failed physical designation.
Houston’s Clowney sheds bust label, ready to do more
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) — Jadeveon Clowney made his first Pro Bowl last season but still remembers those who criticized him after his first two injury-filled seasons with the Houston Texans.
He's intent on doing even more this season to prove them wrong.
The top overall pick in the 2014 draft thinks about many of the things that were said when he missed 15 games combined in his first two years with the Texans and those memories help motivate him.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina's Sindarius Thornwell squirms and shakes his head slightly the Gamecocks are referred to as a one-man team. He might as well get comfortable with the description.
Thornwell has become the Jadeveon Clowney for men's basketball, the face of a basketball program the way the former No. 1 NFL draft pick was for Gamecock football.

Clowney’s dad pleads guilty in 2015 shootout
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — The father of Houston Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney pleaded guilty in a shootout outside an adult club two years ago.
David Morgan, Clowney's father, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and possession of deadly weapon by a felon, according to York County Judicial records. He was originally charged with attempted murder after allegedly firing shots outside the club in August of 2015.
Sentencing was deferred until a later date, according to records.
NFL fines Sean Davis for helmet hit on Chris Conley
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL fined Steelers safety Sean Davis $24,309 of his helmet-to-helmet hit on the Chiefs' Chris Conley in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's 18-16 win at Kansas City last weekend.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was docked $9,115 for cold-cocking Steelers cornerback Ross Cockrell in the third quarter. He was flagged for unnecessary roughness when he knocked Cockrell down after the play.
FOXBORO — Although the Patriots held a 17-13 lead midway through Saturday night’s AFC divisional playoff against the Houston Texans, the offense just did not have its rhythm.
While wide receiver Chris Hogan made an early impact, the majority of Tom Brady’s weapons were either not getting open or unable to bail out the quarterback, who was facing a brutal rush from the likes of Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus.
The Professional Football Writers of America on Monday released its All-NFL team, anchored by an NFL-high four Cowboys and four Chiefs.

Texans couldn’t avoid mistakes in 34-16 loss to Patriots
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Jadeveon Clowney arrived at his stall in the visitors' locker room on Saturday night to find a swarm of reporters talking to fellow defensive lineman — and former Patriot — Vince Wilfork next door.
"Excuse me!" Clowney shouted, over and over again, unable to get a television camera to move out of his way before he uttered an expletive and found another place to change out of the uniform he won't need any more this season.
Clowney’s work helps Texans to divisional round
HOUSTON (AP) — After missing last year's playoff game with an injury, Jadeveon Clowney turned Houston's wild-card win over the Raiders into his NFL coming-out party.
Clowney's first career interception underlined why he was drafted first overall in 2014.
The play itself was spectacular. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound defensive end batted the ball with one hand before tipping it with the other and making the acrobatic grab . But as impressive as it was, what it did for the team was even better.
FOXBORO — Jadeveon Clowney has gone from potential bust to pass-rushing beast in his third NFL season.
Houston selected the defensive end with the first overall pick in the 2014 draft, and after being slowed by injuries in his first two years, everything has clicked for Clowney this season.
Texans’ defense thrives without Watt in 27-14 win
HOUSTON (AP) — Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus helped the Houston Texans to a dominant defensive performance in the first playoff game in franchise history without J.J. Watt.
Clowney had an interception that set up Houston's first touchdown and Mercilus had two sacks to help the Texans to a 27-14 wild-card win over the Oakland Raiders on Saturday.
Osweiler returns to lead Texans over Oakland 27-14
HOUSTON (AP) — Brock Osweiler redeemed himself after last month's benching. Jadeveon Clowney established himself as a postseason force.
And the Houston Texans got their first playoff victory since the 2012 season Saturday against the Oakland Raiders.
Mack, Clowney take center stage when Raiders face Texans
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — For as many similarities as there are between Jadeveon Clowney and Khalil Mack as the two dominant pass rushers taken in the top five of the 2014 draft, there are the stark differences as well.
Steelers sit Big Ben, Bell, Brown for meaningless finale
The playoff-bound Pittsburgh Steelers did as coach Mike Tomlin promised, sitting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le'Veon Bell, receiver Antonio Brown and center Maurkice Pouncey for a meaningless regular-season finale against Cleveland.
Hub Arkush: In a strong pool of most improved player candidates, Jadeveon Clowney is cut above the rest
It’s awards time around the NFL and I have found myself thinking lately about an award they give in the NBA every year but it’s not one you see with the NFL.
I’m talking about the most improved player in the league.
There have been a number of really impressive turnarounds in the National Football League this season and some of those players are worth recognizing.
Clowney, Texans headed to postseason after win over Bengals
HOUSTON (AP) — Jadeveon Clowney can't wait for his first career playoff appearance after missing Houston's postseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs last season with a foot injury.
"It's going to be great," he said. "I was mad last year. I missed it and I was real upset I couldn't get out there with my teammates. This year, I'm going to try and get out there with them and try to help win another game and keep going forward."
Clowney’s comeback complete with first Pro Bowl nod
HOUSTON (AP) — For the first two injury-filled years of his NFL career many thought of Houston's Jadeveon Clowney as a bust.
Now he's healthy and proving the doubters wrong. The No. 1 pick of the 2014 draft is reveling in that fact he can now be called a Pro Bowler.
"I just want to keep playing for the Texans and let them know I'm trying to live up to be worthy of the number one pick and keep coming strong," Clowney said.
NEW YORK — The Oakland Raiders lead the NFL with seven players selected for the Pro Bowl.
Derek Carr, Amari Cooper, Rodney Hudson, Khalil Mack, Reggie Nelson, Kelechi Osemele and Donald Penn were picked from the Raiders, who are in first place in the AFC West going into Week 16.
Jadeveon Clowney's breakout season as a defensive end with the Texans has been rewarded with his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
Clowney, the first overall pick in the 2014 draft who overcame microfracture surgery on his knee during his rookie year, was the only Texans player to make the Pro Bowl in voting by players, coaches and fans.
Texans’ Jadeveon Clowney out for game against Packers
HOUSTON (AP) — Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is out for game against the Green Bay Packers because of elbow and wrist injuries.
The Texans announced Saturday he'll be sidelined for the first time this season and won't travel with the team. Clowney has a career-high 12 tackles for losses.
Other Texans out against the Packers are running back Tyler Ervin (ribs), linebacker John Simon (chest) and wide receiver Jaelen Strong (ankle).
Turnover margin meant everything in Week 12
The theory that turnover margin usually determines who wins an NFL game was proven in Week 12.
Heading into Green Bay's game at Philadelphia on Monday night, all 15 matchups on Thanksgiving weekend were won by teams with a superior or even turnover differential.
San Diego was the most opportunistic with a plus-3 margin in its win at Houston — the Texans first home loss this season.
