LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts lawmaker is among a group of more than three dozen first-term members of the U.S. House pledging to tackle the nation's deadly opioid addiction crisis.
U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan says she has joined the bipartisan Freshmen Working Group on Addiction. The Lowell Democrat says her state has seen overdose death rates above the national average and notes that Americans are more likely to die from opioids than from car crashes.

Esty donates $50,000 to gun violence prevention program
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Outgoing U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty has donated $50,000 of her remaining campaign funds to a gun violence prevention program.
Newtown Action Alliance announced the Democrat's contribution Thursday, the same day Esty's 5th District successor, Democratic U.S. Rep.-elect Jahana Hayes, was being sworn into office in Washington, D.C.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A new member of Connecticut's congressional delegation will be sworn into office with the rest of the incoming 116th Congress.
Democrat Jahana Hayes, a 45-year-old former national teacher of the year, will be the first black woman to represent Connecticut in Congress. She's scheduled to appear at Thursday's swearing-in ceremony, to be held on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Biden to appear at Democratic rally at Hartford school
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden is visiting Connecticut to headline a Democratic rally less than two weeks before Election Day.
Friday's event is planned for 3:30 p.m. at the Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy. Biden will be joined by U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, 5th Congressional District candidate Jahana Hayes, governor candidate Ned Lamont and likely other Democrats appearing on the November ballot.
Biden has been traveling the country, campaigning for fellow Democrats.

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) — Democrats in Connecticut's 5th congressional district will endorse a candidate to replace retiring three-term U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty.
A convention is planned Monday at Crosby High School in Waterbury.
Esty recently announced she would not seek re-election following criticism of her handling of sexual harassment allegations.
