WASHINGTON — S.C. Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison today withdrew from the race to lead the Democratic National Committee, giving up his bid two days before Saturday's vote.
Harrison is throwing his support behind Tom Perez, the former U.S. labor secretary, who is neck-in-neck with U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota for the DNC leadership position.
Harrison made the announcement Thursday, live on MSNBC just before 1:30 p.m. The Post and Courier also confirmed his withdrawal.

ATLANTA (AP) — South Carolina Democratic Party chair Jaime Harrison is exiting the race for Democratic National Committee chairman and throwing his support to Tom Perez, solidifying the former Labor Secretary's place as the front-runner in a still-volatile contest.
Harrison said he simply lacked support to secure the 224 votes needed to capture the chairmanship. Party leaders will vote on the final day of the three-day meeting that began Thursday in Atlanta.

The state Democratic Party says party members throughout the state are participating in Friday's effort through the South Carolina Democrats Care initiative.
Organizers say a variety of service projects are helping support nonprofit organizations and schools across the state. Chairman Jaime Harrison says the political party is also a community organization trying to improve people's lives.
