Jairus Lyles takes winding path from DeMatha to UMBC
DeMatha Catholic High School is known for producing high-quality basketball players, and the 2010 team was no exception. That year, DeMatha went 32-4 behind now Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo and eventually produced three other NBA players in Quinn Cook, Jerami Grant and Jerian Grant.
There has been so much talent at the school that Jairus Lyles, a freshman at DeMatha in 2010, felt almost like an afterthought.

Kansas State coach Bruce Weber says the 5-8, 140-pound Maura is "a little pest" after studying him on game film.
Maura breaks into a wide smile when relayed the comments - like he has been paid the biggest compliment in the world.
"Oh, I'm definitely a pest, but I have to do that for my team to be successful - and I try to do that at a high level," Maura said.

Lyles improvised in the final moments and hit a long 3-pointer with less than a second left, lifting Maryland Baltimore County over top-seeded Vermont 65-62 Saturday in the America East championship game.
"I waved off the last play from the bench, tried to get me some space and take the shot to end the game," Lyles said.
UMBC downs Hartford 75-60, faces Vermont in finals
BALTIMORE (AP) — K.J. Maura scored 18 points with three 3-pointers and five assists, Arkel Lamar added 13 points with eight rebounds, and No. 2 seed UMBC beat third-seeded Hartford 75-60 in Tuesday night's America East Conference Tournament semifinal.
Jairus Lyles added 13 points with two steals and Jourdan Grant had 11 points for the Retrievers (23-10), who hit 10 3s and advance to Saturday's championship game against top-seeded Vermont.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles scored 18 points and had five steals and Maryland-Baltimore County used a second-half surge to break a string of four straight post-season losses with an 89-77 defeat of UMass-Lowell in an America East Conference quarterfinal on Saturday.
The game was the first tournament game UMBC has hosted at the four-year-old RAC Center. The second-seeded Retrievers (22-10) advance to the AEC semifinal round Tuesday.

BALTIMORE (AP) — UC Iroegbu scored 20 points including four free throws in an 8-0 closing run over the final minute and Stony Brook defeated Maryland Baltimore County 64-57 Wednesday night, foiling UMBC's bid for a share of the America East Conference championship.
UMBC (19-10, 10-4) had won three in a row, but the loss leaves the Retrievers three games behind conference leader Vermont with two to play. Stony Brook (12-17, 7-8) has won its last two and four of five.
Lyles leads 2nd-half charge in UMBC’s 68-60 win over Albany
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half and UMBC rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat Albany 68-60 on Sunday, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Great Danes.
K.J. Maura scored 11 of his 19 points in the second half with Joe Sherburne finishing with 14, reaching 1,011 career points.
Albany (20-9, 8-6 America East) led by one before UMBC (19-9, 10-3) finished the final 3:06 on a 12-3 run with Lyles scoring six points and Maura four.
UMBC leads throughout to beat Binghamton 78-68
VESTAL, N.Y. (AP) — Joe Sherburne had 24 points and K.J. Maura added 16 while dishing out six assists as Maryland-Baltimore County led throughout and beat Binghamton 78-68 on Thursday night to claim sole possession of second place in the America East standings.
Arkel Lamar added 13 points and Jairus Lyles had 11 for UMBC.
The Retrievers (17-9, 8-3) had their three-game win streak halted Saturday when conference leader Vermont rolled over them, 81-53.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles scored seven 3-pointers for 34 points and Maryland-Baltimore County defeated Maine 86-74 Saturday and closed out the RAC Arena on a high note, winning 11 straight at home.
UMBC shot nearly 60 percent in the second half as they went into halftime trailing by a point but had built a 22-point lead midway through the second half, 69-47.
Albany spanks UMBC 83-39 behind 21 points from Charles
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Travis Charles scored 21 points, David Nichols scored 17 while Alex Foster grabbed 13 rebounds and Albany dismantled UMBC 83-39 on Sunday.
Ahmad Clark made two 3-pointers and the Great Danes had a 20-4 lead with just over seven minutes before halftime. Albany (16-6, 4-3 America East) never trailed.

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Jairus Lyles scored 16 points with seven rebounds and UMBC rallied late to beat Maine 72-67 on Wednesday night.
Joe Sherburne added 15 points for the Retrievers (11-7, 2-1 America East). K.J. Maura had 12 points and Daniel Akin had 11 points and seven rebounds. Arkel Lamar led the team with nine rebounds.
Lyles sank a jumper early in the second half to give UMBC its biggest lead, 41-30, with 18:26 to play. Maine replied with a 15-3 run and took a 45-44 lead with 13:57 left.
Vermont beats UMBC 71-56 behind Henson
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Payton Henson scored 14 points with a career-high 13 rebounds and Vermont beat UMBC 71-56 in its America East Conference home opener on Saturday night for its fourth straight win and 22nd straight win against the Retrievers.
Trae Bell-Haynes scored 13 and Ernie Duncan had 12 for the Catamounts (11-5, 2-0), who outrebounded UMBC 44-26 and shot 46 percent from the floor.
Lyles scores 27, UMBC rallies to beat New Hampshire, 71-67
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles scored 27 points and UMBC used a late rally to get past New Hampshire, 71-67, in the America East Conference opener for both teams Wednesday night.
The victory was the eighth straight on the Retrievers' home floor and their ninth win in their last 12 games. But it was just their second win over the Wildcats in the last eight meetings.
UMBC used an 8-0 run fueled by a 3-point play by Lyles, then took the lead for good on a Lyles layup with 5:22 to go.
Lyles has 31, UMBC edges Northern Kentucky 76-75
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jairus Lyles broke the 12th tie with a short bank shot with 1:32 to play, giving him 31 points, and Maryland Baltimore County edged Northern Kentucky 76-75 on Sunday.
Lavone Holland II, an 85 percent free throw shooter, made 1 of 2 for the Norse with 1:19 to play. Both teams missed opportunities until Holland got the final shot. He drove into the lane and challenged two defenders near the basket but his floater bounced off the back rim as time ran out.
Milton scores 28, leads SMU comeback to beat UMBC, 78-67
DALLAS (AP) — Shake Milton tossed in 28 points and SMU overcame a seven-point halftime deficit to beat Maryland-Baltimore County, 78-67 in the season opener Friday night.
UMBC maintained a lead until Milton hit a pair of free throws and Ben Emelogu II nailed a 3 to give the Mustangs a 66-63 lead.
Milton was a perfect 10-for-10 shooting from the line and knocked down six free throws down the stretch to help SMU seal the win.
