Ohio State’s Haskins, Washington’s Browning offer contrasts
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The Rose Bowl will be final collegiate start for Washington's Jake Browning. Whether or not it will be for Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins remains a mystery.
Haskins' future has been as much a topic of conversation as Urban Meyer's final game as the Buckeyes' coach. The redshirt sophomore finished third in Heisman Trophy voting after leading the nation with 4,580 passing yards and 47 touchdowns while directing the Buckeyes (12-1) to a Big Ten title.
Gaskin, Browning set for Washington finale in Rose Bowl
SEATTLE (AP) — Considering the way their time as teammates began, it's a wonder Jake Browning and Myles Gaskin made it this far together at Washington.
Especially when one of Gaskin's first — and favorite — memories is of getting yelled at by his quarterback.
Sacramento State hires Troy Taylor as head coach
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Sacramento State has hired Utah offensive coordinator Troy Taylor as its new football coach.
Athletic director Mark Orr announced the move Monday, calling Taylor an innovative play-caller with ties to the Sacramento area.

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Chris Petersen walked away from the party happening in the end zone where the Apple Cup was being passed around by his players for the sixth straight year. He reached down and grabbed a chunk of the snow that blanketed the turf of Martin Stadium and fired back at the snowballs being flung his way from his two sons.
Washington’s Jake Browning has chance to cap stellar career
SEATTLE (AP) — Jake Browning has been the quarterback for more victories than any other player in Pac-12 Conference history.
He's rewritten the record book for No. 16 Washington and despite the undue criticism that has come his way by the fan base at times through his career, will long be regarded as one of the great quarterbacks to wear the Huskies' purple and gold.
No. 17 Washington builds big lead, beats Oregon State 42-23
SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Petersen thought he'd make it through his pregame speech the night before the final home game for Washington's seniors. Then he looked at quarterback Jake Browning, and Petersen's words trailed off.
Browning rebounds from benching for No. 20 Washington
SEATTLE (AP) — Jake Browning was angry and probably had every right to be.
After four seasons as Washington's starting quarterback, the last thing Browning expected was to be benched because of the Huskies' offensive woes.
Instead of letting the benching a week ago against California fester, Browning responded as Washington hoped, throwing one touchdown and running for another in the Huskies' 27-23 victory over Stanford on Saturday.
Washington holds off Stanford’s late rally, wins 27-23
SEATTLE (AP) — Myles Gaskin sat as a spectator for two straight games with Washington knowing it would need it senior running back when Stanford rolled into town.
The Huskies ended up leaning on Gaskin perhaps more than they expected.
"There's no way to put into words because that guy is unbelievable," Washington quarterback Jake Browning said. "When us two are back there I feel really good."
Petersen backs Browning as Huskies seek offensive answers
SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Petersen tried to make it clear Monday that his decision to bench quarterback Jake Browning during Washington's loss to California was an attempt to spark the Huskies' sluggish offense and not an indictment of his fourth-year senior quarterback.

No. 15 Washington pulls away late to top Colorado 27-13
SEATTLE (AP) — Jake Browning and Aaron Fuller saw the pressure Colorado was about to bring and the open field that awaited.
One quick slant connection between Browning and Fuller was finally enough for No. 15 Washington to shake the Buffaloes.
"They were bringing the house. Just had to hold on to it long enough for him to be able to work his move and get open," Browning said.

Gaskin runs for 2 TDs, No. 10 Washington beats UCLA 31-24
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Jake Browning is known for his arm, but the Washington quarterback showed that he can be elusive when on the run.
Browning threw for 265 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran for 49 yards and a score to lead the 10th-ranked Huskies to a 31-24 victory over UCLA on Saturday.
Improved protection, improved offense for No. 10 Washington
SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Petersen has said repeatedly that if Jake Browning is given the chance to scan the field and set his feet, it's awfully difficult to slow down Washington's senior quarterback.
The past two weeks have shown just how important the protection is for the efficiency of No. 10 Washington's offense and how much the Huskies offensive line has improved since the season opener against Auburn.
Browning shines as No. 11 Washington routs No. 20 BYU 35-7
SEATTLE (AP) — Standing behind a podium and facing a bank of television cameras, Washington quarterback Jake Browning was uncomfortable for the first time all night.
"This is weird," Browning said.
He looked completely at ease while picking apart BYU in one of the finest passing performances in Washington's rich QB history.
Dilemma facing teams with late leads: Kneel or keep playing?
Closing out a victory when you have the ball and a narrow lead with time running out can require some math proficiency and a little creativity.
Two Pac-12 games last week show just how challenging things can get.
No. 10 Washington holds off rally, beats Arizona State 27-20
SEATTLE (AP) — Jake Browning spent the first three weeks earning his share of criticism for the kind of miscues not expected of a fourth-year starting quarterback.
Saturday night was a return to Browning looking more like the quarterback Washington has come to expect with plenty of touchdown passes and very few mistakes.
Browning threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter, added a third TD toss early in the fourth quarter, and No. 10 Washington outlasted Arizona State 27-20.

Washington State’s Minshew is a QB to watch in the Pac-12
At the beginning of the season, Washington State coach Mike Leach played coy with the media — as he often does — over his choice for starting quarterback.
The Cougars had four candidates and Leach wryly said it would be a "thrill a minute" to discover which one would emerge.
No. 10 Washington knows it must be better on offense vs Utah
SEATTLE (AP) — Whether it was the inability to get the run going or the mistakes a four-year starter like Jake Browning should not be making, No. 10 Washington could not have looked more unimpressive in what turned out to be a 42-point victory.
Not playing well and beating an FCS school is one thing. Not playing well on Saturday at Utah in the Huskies' Pac-12 Conference opener could lead to trouble.
No. 9 Washington wakes up late in 45-3 win over North Dakota
SEATTLE (AP) — Jake Browning was salty, filled with irritation about his performance.
He was speaking solely about himself, but the senior quarterback for No. 9 Washington might have been speaking about all of the Huskies' offense.
No. 9 Auburn scores late, beats No. 6 Washington 21-16
ATLANTA (AP) — The Auburn Tigers had some bad memories from their last two trips to Atlanta.
They headed home from this one feeling a whole lot better.
With a performance that didn't earn a bunch of style points but will look awfully good on the resume, No. 9 Auburn rallied for a 21-16 victory over No. 6 Washington when Jatarvious Whitlow ran 10 yards for a touchdown with 6:15 remaining Saturday.

Heisman darkhorses: Can Browning repeat Mayfield’s path?
Washington's Jake Browning is hoping to repeat what Baker Mayfield did last year.
Mayfield was a Heisman Trophy longshot in the preseason, but ended up winning the award while leading Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff for the second time in three years.
Washington begins spring football featuring some changes
SEATTLE (AP) — The start of spring football at Washington on Wednesday brought a new offensive coordinator, a new play-caller on defense and even a new highly hyped transfer quarterback still a year away from playing.
Even with all the change, it's still Chris Petersen's show with a team that includes a fourth-year starting quarterback, a fourth-year starting running back and plenty of high expectations.
Washington welcomes home Georgia transfer QB Jacob Eason
SEATTLE (AP) — Washington announced former Georgia quarterback Jacob Eason is transferring to the Huskies.
Eason was a five-star recruit from Lake Stevens High School near Seattle. He signed with Georgia in 2016 and started as a freshman, but injured his knee in last season's opener and never could regain his starting job from freshman Jake Fromm. Georgia went to the national title game with Fromm and soon after Eason said he was transferring back home.
We interrupt this basketball season for a return to football.
With all five Pac-12 coaching vacancies filled and the early entries for the NFL draft declared, here’s a look at how the conference’s preseason media poll might look when it comes out in six months.

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington star running back Myles Gaskin will return to school for his senior season rather than enter the NFL draft.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Quarterback Jacob Eason said Friday he is leaving Georgia, an expected decision after he lost his starting job to freshman Jake Fromm.
Eason made the announcement on his Twitter account.
"Thank you UGA for an incredible two years," he wrote. "The memories and relationships I have made will truly last a lifetime. I will miss suiting up in red and black, but Athens will always be a place I can call home."
No. 9 Penn State faces No. 12 Washington in Fiesta Bowl
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Penn State and Washington had national-title aspirations dashed with midseason losses.
Both teams shook off those losses to reach the Fiesta Bowl, giving the big game in the desert another marquee match-up.

SEATTLE – Washington didn’t have senior Dante Pettis, the NCAA record-setting punt returner and the primary target for a receiving unit that was already decimated by injury.
Senior Lavon Coleman, the Huskies’ second-leading rusher, limped off the field a few minutes after Pettis’ departure midway through the first quarter with an apparent left ankle injury.

No. 16 Washington gets 10 points in last minute to stun Utah
SEATTLE (AP) — A bit of late-game mastery by Washington quarterback Jake Browning provided Tristan Vizcaino a chance at redemption for a season of shaky kicking and the capper to one crazy rally.
Pac-12 after dark, indeed.
Vizcaino hit a 38-yard field goal as time expired and No. 16 Washington scored 10 points in the final 58 seconds to stun Utah 33-30 on Saturday night.
SEATTLE — Most of Saturday’s announced crowd of 70,572 was stuck in a sea of taillights exiting Husky Stadium during the fourth quarter.
The rain-soaked fans seeking relief inside warm cars missed Jake Browning’s final snap of the game, which didn’t have any bearing on Oregon’s 38-3 loss to Washington but meant a lot to the visitors.
Pettis sets NCAA mark as No. 12 Washington rolls Oregon 38-3
SEATTLE (AP) — After five games without a spectacular moment on special teams, it was time for Dante Pettis to stand alone in the NCAA record book.
Pettis became the NCAA's career leader in punt return touchdowns and had a 47-yard TD reception, leading No. 12 Washington past Oregon 38-3 on Saturday night.
"If he makes the first guy miss, it's usually a touchdown," Washington quarterback Jake Browning said.
After snapping streak, No. 12 Washington set to host Oregon
SEATTLE (AP) — Jake Browning would rather talk about the six touchdowns he threw a year ago against Oregon. Or simply snapping a 12-game losing streak to the Ducks.
No matter how much Browning wants to deflect the conversation, it all comes back to "The Point," that moment when Washington's quarterback briefly lost his composure, pointing at an Oregon defender on his way into the end zone.

SEATTLE (AP) — As his freshman season has progressed, Washington's Hunter Bryant has been fed more information, more responsibilities and ultimately more opportunity.
The potential of the Huskies newest offensive weapon finally flashed on Saturday night.
"There's always that adjustment period where you're not sure. A player is really good in high school but something doesn't click," Washington quarterback Jake Browning said. "But it definitely clicks for him."
No. 6 Washington overcomes slow start in 42-7 win over Beavs

SEATTLE (AP) — The undercard to Washington's schedule wrapped up as expected, with another one-sided romp and another night where Dante Pettis left the stadium buzzing.

"He's an awesome player. He really is," Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford said.
No. 7 Washington does as expected, rolls Montana 63-7
SEATTLE (AP) — Dante Pettis couldn't adequately describe his latest punt return touchdown for No. 7 Washington that put him in the Pac-12 record book by himself.
A sprint to the right, a cutback to the left and a move on the punter that left Pettis unable to find the right words.
Pettis, Browning lead No. 8 Washington past Rutgers, 30-14
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — If No. 8 Washington wants to get back to the college playoffs, the Huskies are going to have to pick it up after a less-than impressive opening victory over Rutgers.
On the other hand, if the Scarlet Knights continue to play the way they did against the defending Pac-12 champions, they are going to surprise some teams.
Sam Darnold headlines loaded ‘Conference of QBs’
The Pac-12 has been called the Conference of Quarterbacks and it looks like it will really live up to that this season.
USC's Sam Darnold leads a strong group of returning QBs, including Jake Browning of Washington and Josh Rosen of UCLA.
But there are some newcomers, too. Oregon State has community college transfer Jake Luton, while Utah's Tyler Huntley wrested away the starter's job from a senior incumbent after a glimpse of the field last season.
