Astros agree to deals with 7 players, but not Cole or Correa
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros have agreed to terms with seven of their arbitration-eligible players, but star shortstop Carlos Correa and right-hander Gerrit Cole are not among them.
Correa, the top overall pick in the 2012 draft, made just $1 million last season. He asked for $5 million when swapping figures with the team, and the Astros offered $4.25 million. Cole, who made $6.75 million last year, asked for $13.5 million, and the team offered $11,425,000.
Vogelbach’s slam in 8th powers Seattle over Houston 4-1
HOUSTON (AP) — When Houston's Jake Marisnick made a highlight-reel catch on a ball hit by Robinson Cano for the second out of the eighth inning Monday night, Seattle manager Scott Servais started to think it just might not be his team's night.
Turns out he just had to wait a little bit longer.
Rookie pinch-hitter Daniel Vogelbach hit his first career grand slam two batters later, lifting the Mariners over the Houston Astros 4-1 on Monday night.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — All-Star outfielder George Springer left Houston's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after injuring his left thumb trying to steal second base in the third inning Sunday.
Springer exited with discomfort in his thumb following a headfirst dive into the bag. He was thrown out by Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal.
It's unclear how long the 2017 World Series MVP might be sidelined.
Astros beat Rays 1-0 for 11th straight road win
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — With another dominant pitching performance, the Houston Astros didn't need much offense — or luck — to tie a franchise record for road wins.
Lance McCullers pitched seven strong innings, Jake Marisnick homered and the Astros beat the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 Thursday night for their 11th straight victory away from home.
Morton, Marisnick power Astros over Blue Jays 7-0
HOUSTON (AP) — The normally stoic Charlie Morton actually cracked a smile after he was reminded that his stellar outing gave him 10 wins for just the third time in his 11-year career.
However, the Houston right-hander was quick to point out that he wouldn't have such success without help from his teammates, a fact that was on display on Tuesday.
HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa capped a May to forget with a big hit that helped the Houston Astros to a win.
Correa snapped an 0 for 10 slump with a two-run homer in the first, and Tony Kemp and Jake Marisnick each had an RBI in a 4-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.
Correa's home run ended a month during which he hit just .192 after batting .315 in April.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Charlie Morton remained unbeaten this season — and knew where to place the credit for his latest victory.
Morton (7-0) pitched six solid innings, Alex Bregman and Jake Marisnick hit three-run homers and the Houston Astros defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-2.
"I felt like I was along for the ride," Morton said. "It was just one of those days for me. They picked me up all night."
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Houston Astros recalled outfielder Tony Kemp from Triple-A Fresno on Wednesday after sending Jake Marisnick down after the previous night's game.
Kemp was hitting .335 with a .841 OPS this season at Triple-A, including a 20-game hitting streak end that ended Tuesday.
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros outfielder George Springer is day to day with a bruised left elbow after being hit by a 92 mph pitch from Texas Rangers starter Cole Hamels in the fourth inning.
Springer remained on the ground for nearly two minutes Friday night as Houston's medical staff attended to him. He finished the inning as a baserunner, but was replaced in center field in the top of the fourth by Jake Marisnick.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — As happy as AJ Hinch has been with the top of his lineup, the Astros' manager has been equally pleased with the production from the bottom half of the order, too.
Then again, the way Houston's offense has been going lately it doesn't seem to matter who is batting or where.
George Springer kept up his hitting surge with two hits and two RBIs, Alex Bregman homered and the Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 4-2 on Tuesday night.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Carlos Correa thinks Lance McCullers Jr. is headed for a big season. McCullers feels the same way about Correa.
McCullers struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings, Correa hit a two-run homer and the Houston Astros beat the Texas Rangers 9-3 on Saturday.
"What I've seen from Lance in spring training is he's nasty, he's just filthy," Correa said. "I really believe that if he stays healthy for the whole year, he can be in the conversation for a Cy Young Award."
Five days before spring training concluded, there were consecutive games in Fort Myers, Fla., about 2½ hours away from the Astros’ West Palm Beach facility. Manager A.J. Hinch took just three major league position players — George Springer, Alex Bregman and Jake Marisnick — along with the four men vying for the club’s final two opening-day roster spots.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. | The Nationals will begin their spring training schedule on Friday at 1:05 p.m. in West Palm Beach against the Houston Astros, who share the Fitteam Ballpark of the Palm Beaches with Washington.
But don't expect a lot of regulars for the World Series champion Astros, according to the lineup posted outside of the Houston clubhouse Thursday. Houston will be the home team Friday against the Nationals, who will start lefty Tommy Milone.
Marisnick’s 2 homers, 5 RBIs power Astros past Rays 14-7
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston's lineup is so powerful that even the Astros' No. 9 hitter Jake Marisnick has been dangerous at the plate this season.
He proved that once again on Monday night, finishing with three hits, including two homers, and a career-high five RBIs and the Astros coasted to a 14-7 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Fiers strikes out 11 as Astros beat Twins 5-3
HOUSTON (AP) — On a day when Houston's powerful hitters were lagging, the Astros found a way to generate runs in another way.
Mike Fiers struck out a season-high 11 over seven strong innings and Nori Aoki had two hits and two RBIs to help the Astros beat the Minnesota Twins 5-3 on Sunday.
The AL West leaders took two of three from the Twins coming out of the All-Star break.
Reddick’s big day lifts Astros over Athletics 12-9
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Josh Reddick will take a three-hit game any time. This one meant just a little bit more to the Houston Astros outfielder, though.
"You always want to do well against your former team," said Reddick, who played in Oakland for parts of five seasons. "I enjoy beating them regardless. Whether I got 0 for 4 or I go 4 for 4. So, it is fun."
Reddick homered and scored four runs, Jake Marisnick and Marwin Gonzalez each went deep and the Astros beat the Athletics 12-9 on Thursday.
Astros’ Springer suffers hand injury, leaves game
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Houston Astros outfielder George Springer suffered a left hand contusion after being struck by a 92-mph fastball from Jesse Hahn leading off Thursday against the Oakland Athletics.
The ball grazed Springer's left shoulder. Springer is tied for second in the American league with 21 home runs. His status is day-to-day.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Houston Astros have found success stringing together hits, even just base hits. They had five singles in the decisive sixth Wednesday night.
Carlos Correa homered, Mike Fiers struck out five over six innings to win his fourth straight decision, and the majors-best Astros won for the ninth straight time in Oakland, beating the Athletics 5-1.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — As good as the Houston Astros have been at home this season, they've been even better on the road while piling up wins at a ridiculous rate.
It's a fact that's not lost on manager A.J. Hinch, although he's not inclined to read much into it just yet.
George Springer hit his 20th home run, Jake Marisnick and Derek Fisher also went deep and the Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 4-1 on Monday night.
Astros score 5 in 9th to top Royals 6-1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Lance McCullers took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Jose Altuve hit a two-run homer in a five-run ninth as the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 6-1 on Thursday night.
Altuve's ninth home run came off Kelvin Herrera (1-2) with Josh Reddick, who walked on four pitches to lead off the inning, aboard. Herrera has yielded seven home runs in 24 1/3 innings after giving up only six in 72 innings last season.
HOUSTON (AP) — In his last few starts, Houston's Joe Musgrove felt like he had been the weak link on the team with the best record in the majors and he was determined to turn things around.
He was able to do that on Friday night by pitching seven strong innings in the Astros' 2-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
HOUSTON (AP) — Jake Marisnick wouldn't acknowledge whether he thought his tiebreaking home run in the bottom of the eighth inning had ended the game. His teammates, however, were teasing him in the clubhouse after the game about a nearly humiliating premature celebration while he was rounding the bases.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Marisnick said with a grin when asked about it. "No comment."
MIAMI (AP) — The Houston Astros are playing so well they needed unbeaten ace Dallas Keuchel for only five innings Tuesday night.
The left-hander became the first seven-game winner in the majors despite his shortest outing this season, and Houston beat the sinking Miami Marlins 12-2.
NEW YORK (AP) — In a game Houston ace Dallas Keuchel started, the best toss home definitely belonged to Jake Marisnick.
A defensive replacement in left field, Marisnick made a perfect throw to nail Jacoby Ellsbury at the plate for the final out and the Astros held off the New York Yankees 3-2 on Thursday night.
A matchup between teams with the best records in baseball came down to the final play, and the Astros were better — barely.
Astros place OF Jake Marisnick on 7-day concussion DL
CLEVELAND (AP) — Houston outfielder Jake Marisnick has been placed on the seven-day concussion list after running into a wall.
Marisnick was chasing a fly ball in the first inning at Tampa Bay on Sunday when he hit a fence and fell to the ground. He was removed in the third inning.
Marisnick is batting .286 with two homers and two RBIs in 17 games. Outfielder Teoscar Hernandez was recalled from Triple-A Fresno before Tuesday's game at Cleveland.
HOUSTON (AP) — After hitting his first home run for Houston in 12½ years, Carlos Beltran was asked to recall the last time he went deep for the Astros.
"I don't remember," he said. "I swear to God. I wish I could. Playoffs maybe. But I don't remember where."
Jake Marisnick also homered on Thursday in a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros blared Michael Jackson hits and were feeling celebratory vibes on Sunday after snapping a skid with another extra innings win.
Jake Marisnick hit a tying home run off Kelvin Herrera in the ninth inning and Evan Gattis drew a bases-loaded walk from Matt Strahm in the 12th, helping the Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Sunday and stop a three-game losing streak.
HOUSTON (AP) — After going 1 for 27 with runners in scoring position through the first three games of the season, the Seattle Mariners were desperate to get a big hit when it mattered Thursday night.
Instead of just one, they got two.
Jarrod Dyson hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning and Jean Segura drove in a run later in the inning to lift the Mariners to a 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros.
"It was good to get that hit," Dyson said. "It was even better to get the win."
I am sure they will break out soon.
Crooked numbers, huge innings, soaring stats and all that.
My last concern about the 2017 Astros is A.J. Hinch's overloaded daily lineup, which runs so deep he's already giving star bats days off.
Alex Bregman and Josh Reddick sat Thursday night against Seattle at Minute Maid Park. Marwin Gonzalez batted second and played third, while Jake Marisnick started in center field and hit eighth.
Syndergaard-D’Arnaud can’t stop stolen bases
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — The Houston Astros demonstrated Friday what the rest of the league knows and the Mets realize themselves, but haven't been able to fix.
Teams can run successfully on the battery of opening-day pitcher Noah Syndergaard and catcher Travis d'Arnaud - almost seemingly at will.
The Astros were a perfect 4 for 4 in stolen bases at First Data Field in the right-hander's fourth start of the spring: three by Derek Fisher, the other by fellow outfielder Jake Marisnick.
Keuchel, Astros agree to $9.15 million, 1-year contract
HOUSTON (AP) — Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros avoided salary arbitration when the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner agreed Friday to a $9.15 million, one-year contract following a subpar season.
The left-hander, who turned 29 on New Year's Day, was 9-12 with a 4.55 ERA in 26 starts last year and won his third straight Gold Glove after going 20-8 with a career-best 2.48 ERA in 2015.
Keuchel made $7,275,000 last year. He is eligible for free agency after the 2018 season.
Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow called newly signed outfielder Josh Reddick a "perfect fit" based on his formidable defense and quality lefthanded hitting, but the team has not determined exactly where he will fit in the field.
2016 WAR: -1.1In a disappointing season for Houston, Tucker posted the lowest WAR on the team. The second-year player hit .164/.222/.328 with 40 strikeouts in 144 plate appearances. He showed good power in the minors -- he hit 24 home runs across Double-A and Triple-A in 2014 -- so perhaps he'll become an asset with improved plate discipline. Cory Rasmus is a free agent, and Jake Marisnick was even worse offensively than Tucker, so Tucker should get an opportunity to earn playing time in 2017.
