DETROIT (AP) — Kenny Carpenter scored 22 points and No. 8 seed Cleveland State defeated ninth-seeded Youngstown State 72-71 Friday night in a first-round matchup of the Horizon League Tournament.
The Vikings (10-22) advance to play top-seeded Northern Kentucky — which has a bye — in a quarterfinal game Saturday.
Carpenter made 1 of 2 fouls shots with 17 seconds left for 72-68 lead. Cameron Morse buried a 3-pointer just six seconds later to reduce the Penguins' deficit to a point.
Cleveland St. slips past Youngstown St. 99-94 in double OT
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Bobby Word sank seven 3-pointers and finished with 25 points, Stefan Kenic chipped in 17 points, including a 3-pointer to force a second overtime period, and Cleveland State slipped past Youngstown State for 99-94 win in double OT on Saturday night.
Oakland wins 82-66 for Kampe’s 600 victory
CLEVELAND (AP) — Jalen Hayes scored 24 points and Oakland beat Cleveland State 82-66 on Friday night to give coach Greg Kampe his 600th career victory.
Kampe, in his 34th season at Oakland, became the 15th active coach to reach 600 Division-I victories.
Cleveland State holds off UIC late to post 86-78 upset win
CHICAGO (AP) — Tyree Appleby and Stefan Kenic converted 7 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes and Chicago State held on to upset Illinois-Chicago, 86-78 in a Horizon League game Saturday night.
The loss pushed the Flames two games back of conference-leader Northern Kentucky. Wright State fell out of a first-place tie and is in second place, a game ahead of UIC.
UIC hangs on for 87-80 win over Cleveland State
CLEVELAND (AP) — Jordan Blount scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Illinois-Chicago to an 87-80 win over Cleveland State on Saturday.
Godwin Boahen added a team-high 18 points with 6-for-8 shooting, Tarkus Ferguson had 16 points and Tai Odiase got 12 for UIC (10-11, 5-3 Horizon League). It was Blount's second double-double of the season.

Northern Kentucky powers past Cleveland State 70-55
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) — Mason Faulkner scored 16 points with 7-for-11 shooting and Northern Kentucky cruised to a 70-55 win over Cleveland State on Monday night.
Drew McDonald added 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Carson Williams had 12 points to go with nine boards for Northern Kentucky, which has won five of its past six games. Kentucky (12-6, 5-1 Horizon League) got 10 steals to Cleveland State's three and outrebounded the Vikings 38-33.
Niagara holds off Cleveland State 79-77
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — Kahlil Dukes scored 21 and hit a key 3-pointer with 2:17 left to help Niagara hold off Cleveland State 79-77 on Tuesday night.
The teams traded 11-1 runs in the final 7 ½ minutes. The Purple Eagles (6-6) used their run to build a 73-62 lead and the Vikings' response cut the deficit back to one with 3½ minutes left.
Edwin lifts Kent State past Cleveland State in OT 79-74
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Jimmy Hall scored 19 points to go with a career-high 18 rebounds and Deon Edwin got 10 of his 12 points in overtime as Kent State stopped a Cleveland State rally for a 79-74 win Saturday.
Trailing 69-68 in overtime, Kent State (1-0) got a 7-0 run fueled by Edwin — two layups and a 3-pointer — to put the Golden Flashes on top for good with 1:06 left. Edwin also had a jumper to open the scoring in OT and closed out the extra period with a free throw to seal it.
