Penguins appreciate chance to take in NCAA tournament, shoot around after
At 5-2-1 since the calendar flipped and with seven games over the final 11 days of the month, the Penguins are involved in their own sort of March Madness.
They got a small taste of the real thing, too.
The Penguins en masse took in some of the NCAA tournament action at their home rink, PPG Paints Arena, on Saturday. And then they got to play a little hoops on the court, too.
Chad Ruhwedel was set to play his 100th career NHL game Wednesday night in Philadelphia.
It's a nice milestone for an undrafted, undersized defenseman who, as a San Diego native, didn't take a traditional path to the sport's highest level.
Frankly, though, the way Ruhwedel sees it, career game No. 98 represented a greater cause for celebration.
Fight night in Philly? Penguins bruiser Jamie Oleksiak isn’t expecting that
PHILADELPHIA – When the Penguins face the Flyers on Wednesday night, they will be making their first trip to the Wells Fargo Center since they dealt away heavyweight Ryan Reaves at the NHL trade deadline.
In the past, that might have been a big problem for the Penguins.
For decades, the Flyers preyed on opponents who didn't have the artillery to match them shot for shot in a knock-down, drag-out war.
Penguins Matt Hunwick on his play: ‘Overall, it’s been alright’
During the Penguins' three-game losing streak, Matt Hunwick has been on the ice for 11 of the opponents' 17 goals, including nine at even strength. This despite playing in only about a quarter of the available minutes.
As such, Hunwick has become something of a fan lightning rod during this sour stretch for the Penguins, particularly in that it has come after the team traded Ian Cole — a move that necessitated Hunwick's regular playing time.
